resolved: hardware problem (note to self...never question the VM documentation. The doc indicates clearly that 'boxed' is a hardware problem)
The 'channel' bypass switch was on. The CE flipped the switch, and VM is happy along with the quest that needed the printer. Thanks for the responses on & offlist. jlh >VM shows the device is 'boxed'.
