CONLOG and HISTLOG files are cleaned up automatically, additionally you can
code an FCXRENAM EXEC that the PTK will execute, and where you can cleanup
other things, or create extra archives. Apart from that, no automatic
cleanup is done and when the A-disk gets full, it remains full. But,
PERFSVM remains active, you will still be able to look at real-time
performance data.
I've got an EXEC that runs in one of my other servers that will collect more
CONLOG files in SFS, useful for debugging. It also keeps an eye on the 191
disk of PERFSVM and removes the FCXTREND file when the disk becomes more
than x% full. I'll send it to you, it should run in a server that is
authorized in the PTK, or you can change it to become FCXRENAM. As server
you could use VMUTIL, for example based on my RxServer package.

What product is reporting this data? Is this linux data, which would also be a strange reporting method?

It really depends on the context, maybe you're getting this somewhere
from Performance Toolkit screens? The first thing to check would be
whether the 0's are valid data or just show lack of information.

But if the numbers are valid, I would conclude that you defined a
large virtual machine so big that it never even needed to swap at all
(or you did not define swap space for it so it could not swap). The
paging would be the trouble that VM takes to hold the virtual machine
in memory. Some paging at start and end of activity is normal, and
obviously it will slow down the virtual machine but allow others to
make progress.

I do recall that various rates per user in performance toolkit are
bogus, so you should be careful before you draw any conclusions from
that. If you have ESAMON numbers I may be able to help you better.

Indeed, looking at the book this is one of the screens I remembered.
For rates reported, it is important to know over what interval it is
being computed. As far as I know PerfKit takes the time between
pressing ENTER while looking at the screen. This is only useful when
the metric itself does not change a lot. Paging however is typically
burst-wise, so doing random intervals only serves recreational
purposes. You'd probably want to look at a period of time with fixed
intervals. That's probably easier with IND USER

Page-in rate The number of pages paged in per second.

Just didn't know what the difference was. I'm not swapping from what I can
tell, but there is paging and I just don't know what the difference is.

So this is what I suggested: the paging that z/VM does to retain the
virtual machine in main memory. Depending on the amount of pressure in
z/VM, you can see large portions of the virtual machine being paged
out once. You need to look at some more numbers to tell (because just
paging out does not slow the virtual machine down).

I can agree with all that has been said but can also rebuke most of it even
with my limited knowledge. The VB Studio product is a reasonable attempt to
set standards for the programming model. I've been told it looks a lot like
Websphere Studio. I agree that the exam is no means to measure ability. I
am scoring at a passing level now and I have attempted only one actual form
application. There is a high level of effort in the product for supporting
the older COM applications and other, so called, unmanaged code. A surprise
considering the corporate history of leaving things behind. That leaves the
actual object model in comparison to the traditional methods of conducting
business. I'd like to find criticism here but the potential of objects and
the methods behind them are far reaching. To far to be dismissed.
My time left in this business is limited but I jumped into a bottomless
pit from the beginning and to find it getting deeper is just part of the
ride. Thanks for the comments.

Can I beg to differ. On the PC platform VB is
perfectly usable for 99% of projects.

The biggest problem with most software projects are
not choice of platform or choice of implementation
language. The biggest problems are :-

 1) Not defining what you actually want the system to
 do.
 2) Changing (1) after work gas started.
 3) Expecting technology to solve what are people or

 4) Expecting a system to do everything, inlcuding make

One typical example. My employer is implementing SAP.
As a result they are changing the charging code

Ed,
In my rush that one escaped me. Having spent nearly
10 years looking after an X.25 networking package
written almost entirely in Fortran 77 I should have
got that one.

I guess that it proves two things. Firstly that if
pushed you can use almost any language to do any thing
(in those days there were many machines without a C
compiler). If we could write what we did in Fortran I
am sure that you could do it Visual Basic. However it
worked because we followed standards and had good
documentation. Possibly not optimal, butr it worked.
