Just a note to say that I was right about the cause of Suleiman's problem. We located a large chunk of kryptonite under the raised floor near the tape drives (in an undisclosed location). The shielding had slipped and was affecting the tapes. Suleiman has been sent a new order. On a lark, the workmen rolled the kryptonite over near the MVS drives. Let's see what happens Sorry for the inconvenience. As an aside, when you receive media from us, you also get a hardcopy of media report. Don't throw it away or lose it until you've finished with the media. :-) In fact, staple it to the tape or DVD (oh, wait...bad idea.). It contains information that we use to track down any problem with your order. If you suspect you have a problem with the media, please open a PMR so that we can investigate it. It's not that we can't investigate it without a PMR, it's just that PMRs get priority over non-PMR issues. Alan Altmark z/VM Development IBM Endicott

I used to have a utility from some user group called TAPEMAP that would scan a tape and tell how many tapemarks were on a tape and where they were in feet from the beginning reflector strip. It also told you haw many blocks of data were recorded between each tapemark and the size of the largest block. There were some other things on the report but I don't remember what they were. The utility would not work on tape cartages just reel tapes. On rare occasions I wish I had it to find what is on a tape. If anyone updated it to work with newer tapes it would be what you need to get started on finding the data. Now, I just mount the tape on VSE and use interactive DITTO to look at unknown tapes. TAPEMAP still works for showing you the structure/content of a tape, even 3590s. It does not provide correct numbers for the number of FEET in a dataset etc and has not since the advent of 3480 cartridges.
