Linux File system under VM

2010-08-19 Thread Davis, Larry (National VM/VSE Capability)
First I am installing SLES 10 SP 2 Linux on z/VM 5.4

When Setting up CKD DASD for Linux on z/VM it asks about using DIAG on the
Activated DASD.
Was this the Older method for accessing CKD DASD?
What is the best Linux File system to use under z/VM. Ext2, ext3, Reiserfs?

I'd say in the order ext3,ext 2, and I wouldn't even consider reiserfs

Why not SP3? Save yourself some work later. Or even better - 11 SP1.

Ext3 will be the default in 11. It's worked fine for us. I don't think you'd
want to use ext2 and lose the journaling. Reiser has had issues in the past (
I think it ate at least one persons files) and there is uncertainty about its
future.

Re: Linux File system under VM

2010-08-19 Thread Richard Troth
Mace is right. Use EXT3 for most things.
Use EXT2 for things which will ever be shared. (RO)
I also like to use EXT2 for things which don't (or shouldn't) change
much, if only because they MIGHT get shared or mounted RO at some
later time. The journalling on EXT3 is annoying when you try to go
RO. It still wants to replay.

Last time I tried (which was recent and was with a very current
Linux), I had to use LDL for DIAG to work. LDL is an older layout
where the CKD disk is blocked uniformly. I see no reason why CDL
will ever work with DIAG. (And part of me hopes it never does. I
have an affinity for uniformity and interoperability.) But the IBMers
who own that code would have to speak about that future. Near term,
DIAG requires LDL.

I have a Novell starter system and have not learned to upgrade it to SP3 or to
a whole new release yet. I am in my beginning stages of the process of learning
an growing in this area.
