Which level of Linux is running on this guest?

I knew this already. What I'd like to know are possible reasons WHY it

isn't.
I can still logon to the guest, through vm only, but if I try to logoff to

kill it (reipl) it says it's logging off but never reboots. It's hung
higher than a kite, so I have to force it off.

Anyhelp here as to why something isn't able to receive signals would be a

great help.

From z/VM HELP:

HCP2110E The variations of this message are explained below.

MESSAGES:

o Virtual machine is not enabled for signals

o User userid is not enabled for signals

Explanation: A SIGNAL command was issued but the target virtual machine
is not enabled to receive the specified type of signal.

System Action: Execution continues.

Operator Response: If the correct guest was signalled, install a level
of the guest operating system that supports signalling. Otherwise,
address the signal to the correct guest.

This should *definitely* handle signals! Did SuSE turn this OFF in
their kernel, for reasons unknown? Anyone got any light to shed?

Something else is wrong, I suspect.

I have SP3 systems on z/VM 5.1 where this is working perfectly. Unless there is some
outstanding z/VM APAR affecting SIGNAL SHUTDOWN, there must be something seriously hosed
in Larry's Linux machine.

IIRC, you also have to make sure that you have set up inittab to handle the
signals propagated to Linux by VM.

Something like:
ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -h now

Could that be the culprit?

I have in my sles 9 sp3 inittab:
ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -r -t 4 now

but it is the same in my sles 9 sp1 guest

It did work but I guessing it's the guest not playing well with others.

I was at the Columbus meeting of MVRUG last time when Jim spoke of track,

but it was abit..let's not lie... much over my head. The stuff he showed

 I

'm
sure it is full of good stuff but I don't understand it. And I had to get

Change the -r to -h. The -r tells it to reboot.

Two remarks:
1. one can issue CP Q SIGNALS to see who has registered to get a shutdown
signal.
2. To get online help: one no longer needs to remove parts of the message
ID before entering the HELP command, so just issue HELP HCPSIG2110E
