Is it fair to try to go into their organization and change them? We have had more success in improving things for the breed, doing it from outside of the USIHC. We are evoking change from the outside without causing any dissention in their group. Isn't that more fair? better? I think if we joined the USIHC and tried to change them, maybe someone would be saying right now, why don't you go somewhere else if you want change, and leave them alone? That's the other side of the coin. I think we are doing things the right way, as we are. And we're being ever more positively productive than wasting time trying to get someone else to change (wouldn't that be negative energy?). Where would we be today if all of our energy had been wasted on trying to change the USIHC rather than pursuing our positive road? We're doing good for the breed! And you are part of that!! Thanks! I agree with all of that Judy...just can not stand the bitching from some people about the Congress.lets change things from the outside, and not Bitch about them or some of the high priced breeders.keep changing from the outside and leave them alone if that is what feels comfortable. Well I beg to differ..I have one here with no Dam or Sire listed We have some mares here with no 1st prize Stallions, but of course I am sure that that does not mean much to you.. I have other mares here from 1st prize stallions and an amazing pedigrees When you say it isnt an evil thing to do, to use your horse for showing to ride an expensive icelandic, they are all expensive! Your was not expensive, so I do not know where you are coming from on this one. They are all similar in pedigree, they are all expensive. They are not all similar in Pedigree, I have looked at many and they are not all similar, there are different lines of breeding, different regions in Iceland, Germany, Denmark, Canada etc.sorry, but on this you just do not know what you are talking about. Why do you assume a person who doesnt show and trail rides, is out there on an inferior mutt horse that was cheap?? I never Assumed that-that is your negetive attitude again rearing its head. I do not show, I only trail ride...the mare I rode today does not even have papers.call her a mutt if you want, I do not. And where do you get the idea that just because a person does not choose to breed they know nothing about breeding??!? Again I do not have that idea..that is your attitude about what You think I am thinking, you are assuming instead of asking or clarifying. To say someone knows Nothing, would be a pretty Big statement. I could not say that about you as I do not know you or your background in horses. I believe icelandic horse evaluations are meaningless You are intitled to your opinion, but please do not put down people who do not agree with you. I believe a good trail horse is more valuable than a good show horse. I believe we might actually have something in common if you choose to read my words with an open mind. I breed quality TRAIL horses, and ride them, that is the one of the goals of my breeding program. I believe an expensive well gaited well trained obedient trail mount is a more valuable thing to have than an expensive horse with weights around its feet running circles around an arena I have not seen Icelandics with weights around its feet, Walkers, yes. Again we might disagree on what constitutes a weight...but mabye you are Confusing Evaluations with Competitions. The rules are different. S. Lee
Re: [IceHorses] representing the breed
We are asking questions here on this list...that is why this list came into being. And Janice seems to be one of the most positive and funny people on this listI enjoy all of her posts, both funny and the serious aones. Just because you question something does not mean you are not positive. I would say I am having a personal differnt experience...I am hearing her put down the congress or put down the more expensive horses. I do enjoy a lot of her posts, but assuming things about what I am writing and taking my words out of context is not enjoyable...if she were to ask a question to me instead of making an assumption I would be fine with that. I have found some people here to be Very negetive about the congress or professional breeders who actually try to make some money in their program Janice knows alot about the show TWH breeding world and points out similarities she sees in the show Icelandic breeding world. Instead of repeating she is not positive or if you're not a breeder you can't possibly understand the breeding world (how many college professors actually practice the theories they opine on), point out where her information is wrong...I think you will find that it isn't. Trish I am a breeder, you could not have thought I was not a breeder if you have read all this thread. I own an imported Stallion from Iceland, Faldur fra Feti, a very nice Silver Dapple with nice gaits who is producing some very nice foals here. I own 4 Icelandic mares, 1 which is not papered, one which I should be getting the papers soon who is from a first prize stallion, and 1 from old Kolkousi lines, and one from another of a first prize stallion. I have been breeding for almost 5 years now, just a baby in terms of a breeding program, but I do a lot of research and take it seriously. S. Lee

[IceHorses] Raven's colic and my decision
Raven colicked this morning. It was mild and I got her to the vet in plenty of time. It was sand colic. My vet oiled her and her oil is coming out, but this has brought me to the conclusion that I just have too many horses to properly take care of. They all live in a herd and I haven't done the psyllium as often as I need because it is hard to pass out feed pans to everybody and keep the agressive ones from gobbling their pan down and then chasing off the submissive ones before they are done. I'm going to tell the nurse that bought Mom's two horses, Reno and Carson, that she will have to take them home. She has a place, but wanted to keep them here because of my proximity to trails. Foxi and her yearling colt are for sale. Foxi is part Icelandic and probably part Shetland, is 12.2 hands, bombproof and grandma safe and gaits on a loose rein. She is 14 years old and I want $3000 for her. Her almost yearling colt is a gaiting fool in the pasture and is 3/4 Icelandic. I want $800 for him. I will be getting him gelded on the 23rd of April, then I will add the gelding cost to his price. I absolutely have to cut back in order to be able to properly care for them. It is my fault Raven colicked, and the rest could easily have colicked, as well. I now have the dominant horses seperated and they will all be on psyllium for the next 3 weeks. RE: [IceHorses] Pergolide
For those who may be using Pergolide for their Cushings or Insulin Resistant horses, supposedly it is being withdrawn from the market: Oh my gosh, that could be devastating! When Sundance was diagnosed with Cushing's, maybe 10 years ago, the two prescriptions offered were Cyproheptadine and Pergolide. We elected to go with Cyproheptadine (I don't even remember why we didn't go with Pergolide now) and his progress was monitored. He responded beautifully - never foundered again, put some weight back on and because rideable again. After a year or so, I read the results of a study, and I'm pretty sure Sundance's response was part of the study. If I remember correctly, the study found that something like only 30% of the patients responded to the Cyproheptadine - I was just darned lucky he was one of them. There was a much higher rate of improvement in the group that used Pergolide. During the time Sundance was on Cyproheptadine, it became very difficult to find. Luckily, my vet located a compounding pharmacist who was willing to make it for him and would mail it to me. Eventually Sundance succumbed, but I'm sure the meds gave us at least another two years of full enjoyment, during which he was healthy, rideable and pain-free - and happy with his herd mates. Is Cyproheptadine still used (or available) at all? Are there other meds available? Karen Thomas, NC -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Re: [IceHorses] Blue for my boy
I don't know if it appeals to other people, but man, I've sure been on a matching tack kick for the past few months! I don't know what's up with that. Believe it or not, I never was interested in playing with dolls as a kid. I have outfits. WIth Jaspar in the posse he has a trooper look, montreal breast collar, and me in my uniform. On the trail he sometimes has the bona allen with mojave saddle pad and of course I am attired western and he is in his retro silver bead and concho headstall. If english, I will put a braided ribbon on his mane. And then I wear my jodhpur boots and riding breeches. With the Sensation we go endurance, I wear my helmet and jods and my mountain horse knee boots which I got off ebay and are a whole size too big for me so its good if I dont have to walk very far before I get on him. otherwise i wouldnt look so stunning while slopping around in my huge boots and falling on my face. My other horses seem to require one specific look, like the endurance look for Tivar and the trooper look for stonewall since the bona allen is brown and doesnt look so good on him since he is black roan. I have to wear cool colors when I am riding walls, red etc. its hard, looking nice all the time, but you never know when you might run into someone you went to high school with or something. Re: [IceHorses] Raven's colic and my decision
knock on wood, but my horses do not colic from sand. My vet told me a horse on free choice hay in our sandy area does better as far as sand colic. I feed free choice coastal bermuda hay, and I have no grass to speak of. At the boarding barn horses frequently colic'd but the ones on free choice hay didnt. I hear what you are saying, but if you really want to keep them, maybe you could try feeding more hay? I never feed sand clear products because jaspar would never eat it so I just gave up. GB has colicked a lot but lord, he's got so many problems due to age and getting adjusted here. Fox may have storm colic! I am keeping an eye on that. He lays down and acts lackadaisacal when a big front is moving in. I have had their poop tested and no sand. Amazing! I have three rolls of hay left and no way is it gonna make it til end of may when the hay comes in so I will have to peel hay and portion it a month maybe and then I will have to worry... but maybe my garss will be in better by then! Re: [IceHorses] Back Behind the Barn Boys Story
that made me very sad Raven. Jaspar is very stoic and acts like he doesn't notice any of the other horses, he ignores them or when they come into his space he will stalk away all grumpy or correct them. But any time I take one of them away he gets mad about it. When I bring them back he will swish his tail and not speak to me for days. When I took Stonewall away for training I thought my heart would break in two because Jaspar would stomp the trailer floor angrily and call and Stonewall would answer and was freaking out. When we got home Jaspar did not speak to me for two months. And he had always acted like he couldnt stand stonewall! When we took Traveller to the Liz clinic and came home Jaspar was in a snit for a couple of weeks. But when I take Jaspar away and come home, Traveller always comes to me and thanks me, with his eyes glowing he is so grateful. I can almost see his smile! Janice -- yipie tie yie yo

RE: [IceHorses] calling all redneck wannabees / Woman Gets DUI on horseback
Personally, I think horses and booze don't mix. I don't want to ride with or near anyone who is or has been drinking. In the late eighties, about the time we first got horses, there was some study announced that horseback riding was the most dangerous sport of all. I don't remember all the criteria now, but the headline freaked me out - I was a good mom, so what on earth was I subjecting my child to...? That was about the time that the new-generation SEI-approved helmets came out, and when I read the details of the study, there were two things that accounted for most of the equestrian accidents. The first was head injuries - and the SEI helmets were able to prevent he vast majority of serious head injuries. Also a huge number of the equestrian accidents involved alcohol. I felt MUCH better after reading the full article - we weren't planning to drink and ride anyway, and it was easy enough to wear helmets, and when you took those two steps, the risks of serious accidents involving horses went way down. I went up to his stall to say hello and he lifted his front leg holding it there, sometimes pawing the air. He'd put it down, and then do the same with the other. I think lots of horses develop different behaviors to try to communicate with people. Who knows, at some time he may have been given more attention for doing something like that, so it becomes his default talk to me behavior! Judy http://icehorses.net http://clickryder.com

I went up to his stall to say hello and he lifted his front leg holding it there, sometimes pawing the air. He'd put it down, and then do the same with the other. It looked odd. I've seen a horse paw the ground when bored, etc, but never holding a leg up in the air. He didn't look angry, upset or in any pain. Anyone have any idea why he'd do that? Sort of like he's pawing in slow motion, and his leg would just sort of get hung mid-air? My TWH mare will do that when she's frustrated - she doesn't really have to seem angry or upset - it just seems like a primal reaction. She will do it sometimes when she's eating out of her grain pan. It's almost like she feels obligated to paw up the snow to get some grass, even though the grass is her senior pellets - there's no threat in her body language. (And if so, that must be primal, since we rarely get snow...) She's done it all her life, probably more noticeable when she was younger. Karen Thomas, NC -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
