Go somewhere safe like an enclosure or fenced area and practice
achieving softness and remind your horse what leg cues actually mean.

To help you achieve subtle rein cues, hold the bit in your hands and
have someone stand behind you (so you can't see them)give you rein
cues. It's amazing what you can feel. The tiniest tweek of the rein
is quite obvious.

Just imagine what a horse can feel when he has your whole body to talk to...

Good luck...

RE: [IceHorses] Charm and the Saddle

2007-04-14 Thread Virginia Tupper

From: Judy Ryder [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Charm
got scared by it.

Training opportunity!

Talking about saddling--my Orri has been saddled and ridden, so 'knows' all
about saddling, he's sniffed my saddle and pad and isn't afraid of them.

Since I'm doing Level 1 PNH I'm following their saddling exercise and Orri
didn't like me using rhythm to put the saddle pad and saddle on his back--I
would swing them on and off 3 or 4 times, and he would move away and back
off until he finally stood still (he was on a loosely held 12' line).

Saddling him 'normally' I would just tie him, not in crossties, and he'd
stand calm while I'd saddle him up.

I'm wondering if his acting up with the rhythm saddling is because I'm doing
something different and unexpected rather than he's not happy about
saddling. Am I right in thinking that this is all about him accepting
anything I do however out of the ordinary it seems?

I think that this picture was altered... Look at the shadows. Also if the dog
were that size proportionatly to the horse it would have to wiegh at least 600
pounds, not 282. Just compare the body mass and its head t the horse. The
horse looks to be an average sized Arab and I would guesstimate it at about
1000 pounds.

what helps me with the sensation slipping (I have tried many many
treeless saddles and they all slip with me, but the sensation slips
the least) is the way Laree taught me at the Liz clinic. What you do
is face the horse, put your toe in the stirrup and then sorta wallow
over the horse's neck so that you very quickly have some weight on
both sides of the horse. Laree said to grab the saddle flap on the
other side and sorta hold it but I grab the girth strap :) also, and
this is weird and I cant explain it, but after a few times of it
slipping a LITTLE to one side and I was lazy and exasperated, I turned
him around and mounted from the right and it doesnt slip from the
right! I have mounted him the last five or six times from the right,
i think he thinks its normal now!

sidepull, then today I just grabbed a bridle with a myullen pelham bit

turning him fron to back or getting him to flex because I dont know
the leg cues for that and when I did all I did was crook my finger.
So I think I could ride him in anything!

i think i ought to get off the computer. It is beginning to lightning
and the wind is making a growly noise like in the movie twister. I
rode Teev today and the wind had to be gusting at times to about 50
mph. It was in the yard. I rode him past a flapping tarp, a jiggling
pile of tin anchored down with a pile of blocks and a suddenly howling
peacock. He spooked at nothing. But Teev can be cantankerous and
bratty, and one time I was trying to figure out how to make him
sidepass under saddle cause he does it on the ground and when I guess
I jabbed him with my toe or heel or something he objected by flexing
around and making a halfhearted biting motion at my foot. Note I said
biting motion. He did not actually go for it to bite. But I think he
wanted me to know I was aggravating him uneccessarily and
communicating in a way he did not understand. I got off and made him
side pass on the ground again, got on, tried to get him to do it and
he very mannerly on a totally loose rein backed up several feet til I
asked him to stop, then he flexed left and touched his nose to my
ankle, like, I dont know what you want still, but at least you are
being nicer now so I wont try and bite you. haha gotta go! its
beginning to blow and storm

Nasi is not depressed about the saddle in the pic, he is just a little
hung over after his birthday party. When I put the saddle on him I
use a stretchy girth and put it where it is barely tight, just tight
enough so when he moves it wont slip and scare him. He has never once
objected to it, he just wants to smell it, like charm, I think he
likes to smell the other horses it has been on.

With my slow dial up, I can't really watch You Tube (Broadband coming next
month), but I have been mostly successful teaching horses not to fight the bit
by helping them to find a happy spot. If you keep hauling on their mouth,
they never know when they've got it right. If you consistantly reward with
soft
giving hands, they almost always learn to enjoy being right. I don't like to
use any gimmicks, just a plain round snaffle..

Just so you know it doesn't always work, my TWH is the fussiest horse with
his mouth I've ever worked with. He doesn't fight, he fusses, chews, fidgets.
I had his teeth worked on (nothing significant there) switched from my
favorite round snaffle to a kimberwick and finally gave up and put him in
something
the Arab endurance riders call an S-hack - nothing in his mouth. It's really a
kick. Even with no bit, his mouth is going constantly. My guess is that it
is a habit and he will not give it up any time soon. He is, however, much
more relaxed with no bit at all.

I have been a snaffle bit purist. I really have never used any other bit,
but ...
