Hi Mary, sorry, cannot help out on this one. How
lucky for you to have a Clydesdale. They are so
majestic and seem to give off such an air of calm.

I heard a story from a volunteer at the Humane Society
(housing livestock evacuees at my daughter's high
school) that there was someone who actually rode their
Belgian out of Fallbrook when told to evacuate. Long
ride, but they made it!!

Raven, you always get the great pics! The miniature
horses are so adorable. Right across from the Del Mar
fairgrounds (which is also a race horse track) is our
local Dog Beach, so pups and owners can get a nice
slice of nature in the midst of so much heartache.

Ditto. Because of that advice I spent much time with Faxi at first,
simply observing and bonding. I learned so much in that.
I haven't been able to ride (but plan to), yet simply get so much joy
just hanging out with him. He's been an only child for several years
now, so it's really hard now learning how to 'have' two. Riddari is so
adorable and wants to be a pocket pony and Faxi only allows him alloted
time with 'his' human. Well, I guess that's progress.at least now
he's not chasing him out of the pasture anymore. I was just about to
finally send Judy some photos when all hell broke loose. I'll wait till
she gets settled. I got an email from her last night. Yeah!

They certainly are! I really enjoy meeting native Africans in the US--
they are always such gracious, hardworking people.

You might enjoy Rosamond Halsey Carr's book "Land of a Thousand Hills"

Australian Cattle Dogs and Blue (or red) Heelers are - more or less - the
same breed. The Australian Cattle Dogs are the AKC registered version; they
tend to be a little more heavy muscled than the Heeler version. Blue (or
red) heelers are not registered by the AKC; they usually have cropped tails.
Heelers are often smaller and lighter than Cattle Dogs. Either version
generally has very strong instincts to herd (they were developed in
Australia to herd cattle) and to "nip" at the cattle's heels. They have an
often unfortunate habit of "nipping" other things if cattle aren't available
(cats, other dogs, humanswith vets being a special favorite) but I
really like them. They are very, very smart, generally one-person dogs,
very opinionated, tough... just what you'd expect the outback to produce.
Griffin in my third. I prefer the Cattle Dogs because I like dogs to have
tails and not to have been chopped up for fashion.

looking at everyone's dogs has been fun! And thanks so much for all the
kind comments about Griffin - he is a ton of fun.

It must be an optical illusion. His problem was that his right front knee
never developed correctly and couldn't be driven. I had to sell him at one
point due to some serious financial issues and the company that bought him
from me were going to use him for photo shoots - NO DRIVING. Well, they had
a trainer that told them I was wrong and drove him ad he fell and shattered
his knee in like 23 different places. So.in a very very very fateful way,
he came back to me (I was still his registered owner, and the rescue tracked
me down).he is now at a horse rescue down by the Lawrence Welk community off
the 15. I am trying to find them and make sure everything is OK..

Ok, here a quick Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcifer

And here a part from the link:

"Calcifer is a fire demon from Diana Wynne Jones' 1986 novel Howl's Moving
Castle. He is described as "a thin blue face, very long and thin, with a thin
blue nose" and curly green flames as hair."

Ok, he has NO green Hair, but he is a blue-merle.
The night before we picked him up, from his great breeder in Buffalo (a 16 hour
car ride), we were watching the animated movie "Howl's Moving Castle" and the
Character Calcifer was exactly what I needed in my home, since we all
(especially Lydia) were a little depressed in that time because I lost my
Foxhound Julep, she drowned on a windy day, when she was chasing a Seagull :-(

He brought life back into our life and we (again especially Lydia) love him...
(Still, I never will forget my beloved Julep)

Have a great night!

There was no side to side movement at all, and I am VERY familiar with
pace movement. I talked to Liz about it and she suspects it was a true
speed rack, a singlefoot rack since there was no side to side movement.
Whatever it was tho, was something he did not do in a relaxed frame, he
was very braced and stiff. Ironically, I have ridden this same exact gait
with Jaspar, and identically to Tivar, it did not come easy for him, was
very stiff and braced, I did not ask for it, and they both did it in
competition with other horses. I also
rode the same gait with my stonewall and it was very relaxed and fluid and
thrilling, and it was in competition with a horse that has a fast "true" rack
as a default natural gait.

Janice, this was another great post from you. There just are no simple black
and white answers to the gait questions as you point out. It's all so
dependent on the horse, and the context.

That one is a little long, and probably wouldn't make sense to people not on

[IceHorses] Aid for CA horses

2007-10-25 Thread Laree Shulman
I received an email from Stateline Tack and they are matching dollars
for getting supplies to the animals in need in CA - in other words, if
you donate $1, they will donate $2 worth of supplies. They are in
great need of fly masks (for the smoke) , halters, etc. I went to
their web site and there is nothing up yet on their site but I called
Customer Service and they have all the details - including where the
supplies will be going, etc. I like this because you don't have to
buy anything and it's not a percentage of their profits on a sale -
all of your $'s go doubled to the need. Their Customer Service # is:

I love that picture cause she looks like she is so smartand she
is! Only thing is I cannot break her of heeling the horses. She got
kicked really bad about 6 months ago, and people say to just let her
get kicked, she'll learn, but i think in her the heeling instinct is
too strong for her to resist. Oddly she wont heel if we are in the
saddle! Only if they are being led or standing tied or take off
running and we are in the field with them she will take off. I keep
her in the house when i am working the horses. It was making nasi
afraid of dogs. and I was afraid one of the bigger ones would kill
her.

Loved the pictures. They reminded me of the time when our adult daughter
picked Max up from the Humane Society. He was a miniature poodle in
horrific shape. She had made a groomer appointment so that he could have an
immediate and much-needed clip.

The groomer went all out. Max was wonderous. Our little grandaughter saw
him and declared, "Oh Mom, it's a POODLE!". Jennie had made a batch of
brownies for the groomer, knowing he had a real job on his hands.

We got her out of the killshelter on her last day.
They were going to put her down when we saw her and it was out of question if
we take her or not.
She was the most miserable dog I've ever seen.
She was all skinny and afraid of everything but other dogs.
They found her tied to traintracks, without food or water.
This seems to be a "standart-way" to make them aggresive for dog fights and I
spent half a year getting her resocialized. Now we are doing Search and Rescue
and she is the best dog I've ever had.

have a great day!

yes, I am no expert, but from chatting with people who see us with
Alice, they say australian cattledogs are the official breed and they
come in red and blue, but that the Queensland Blue Heeler is a sorta
SUB-category with certain characteristics, a certain kinda tail, coat,
etc and of course blue. I think that must be true tho because we have
seen lots of heelers and some have long thick wavey coats and docked
tails and are shorter and cobbier than alice. We had a friend
graduating from law enforcement academy and she had always wanted a
blue heeler. I saw an ad in the paper for alice so went to look at
her, she was very cheap and I wondered why since she was registered.
I get there and it was a mobile home on "Rollohome Road" and there
were toys scattered all over the yard and a car up on blocks and the
vehicle was an old rusty car, and then I find a very young PREGNANT
mother of three and it was like that commercial where the woman is
inside with 5 little boys demolishing the place. The children were
screaming and knocking each other down and this poor young girl comes
out, she gets in one of those 8 months preghnant stances, holding her
aching back, and says "Look, I just sold the dog, but I am gonna call
my huaband and tell him I am leaving him if I can't sell one more. So
if you will just hold on a minute..." and she lets the dogs out to
play around the yard while she goes to make the call and they are like
wild heathen jumping beans, five of them. And it turned out he said
she could sell us one for cheap, that they had bought five female
puppies of excellent bloodlines to breed to their one male of
excellent bloodlines, to be sorta in the breeding business of blue
heelers etc and then with the kids, and well, you just havent lived
through hyper til you've lived through even ONE blue heeler puppy
alice has calmed down considerable but she still does stuff like come
running out of the bathroom with my panty hose snarling and flipping
them in the air and launching herself off the couch to snatch them out
of mid air, also she "heels" the truck tires when they are standing
still... I know one man who filed his heelers teeth down cause it
would chew holes in his car tires in the yard... anyway. i took
Alice home and said to my husband "look what I bought for Becky for
graduation" and my husband took one look and said "that aint Becky's
thats MY dog." so I guess you could say it was love at first
sight.

I think that most of the fear in riding is not the going fast but the
possible sudden stop that scares you - whether it be from a spook or a
trip or a downed tree, etc. A gallop/flying pace across a wide open
field or down a nice open logging road is thrilling and fun but
dodging trees or coming up to a busy road isn't conducive to enjoyment
in a fast gait. I think that's something that some Icelanders fail to
recognize because they have so many wide open spaces .

We had Wilma. Man I loved that dog. She went to obedience school and did
very well. She loved me best - that would be ONLY. She was the only dog,
in a long life of keeping lots of dogs, that we needed to find another home
for. My husband was working nights. Wilma would not let him in the bedroom
when he got home. I had to get up every night and take her to the laundry
room. The vets couldn't get her out of the cage to spay her. I had to make
a second 50 mile round trip to take her out so they could sedate her for
pre-surgery. She launched herself off the back seat and into the face of
our daughter's school friend when I picked the girls up from school.

Loving her still, she stayed on until she joined a neighbor dog in attacking
our goat babies. Wilma had to go.

Hi Janice,

I know you are active on the yahoo lists.

Could you post this below for me.

To all Fellow Horseman,

Many of us are far away from the Southern California fires and have
felt helpless in many ways.

There is a way we can help.
There is going to be long term needs for the horses care and housing,
the folks that own and love them are going to have so much to worry
about in bring their lives back together. Their financial means will
be limited and feed is and will in shortage for the horses..
I have written Nutrena, Purina Southern States, Tractor Supply about
donating feeds to the horses owners and Mid-West Ag who own most of
the rights to beet pulp in this country.
If you know of any large feed mills in your part of the country, if
you can do the same and see if we can working as a comminute help get
some
large scale relief to the horses and their owners.

I'll next start writing the larger tack manufactures for supply
donation such buckets, manure forks, halters, leads etc..
This is one way we can help.

Best Regards,

Isn't Kisi the father of your lovely Hnisa? I seem to remember that she
