[IceHorses] Home Is Good!
We are home. The air quality is not good, but we decided it would be nice to be home, get things taken care of, clean up, water plants, get the animals back to their routines. We are so sorry for our friends who lost their homes. When we left, both my husband and I took on the attitude that we would not worry about the house, garage, sheds, etc. and anything in them. We were not vested in whether they would be here or not, at the end of the journey. Everything could be replaced with something newer, better, different. At one point, I wondered to myself if there was anything that I would miss if it was gone. The only thing that I would have been sad about losing was our Italian Cypress trees, about 75 of them, which we bought as seedlings and have encouraged to grow for four years along the house fenceline. They are living things and their years of growth would have been a shame to lose. But they are still here, alive, and appear to be healthy. All of our plants, trees, and bushes are fine, and the flowers are blooming, which is amazing with not being watered for four days in the heat. The special surprise that we saw upon arrival home, is a nice white Easter lily! I would have thought that the season was over for lilies! Maybe a good omen! The dogs are happy to be home. Our daughter's dog didn't mind the trip and having to stay with another family for a while (they had three kids to keep him busy fetching a ball a zillion times), but our dog, Bo, was depressed being away from home. The horses are also glad to be home. They were in one stall, between Quarter Horses on two sides, and llamas on another (the llamas were recently rescued from another home). The fella that took them in is an older rodeo guy. Altho we couldn't pinpoint it, our paths most likely crossed over the years, while he raced or roped, and I probably announced and timed him. Charm, a slow eater, will be glad to be able to take her time eating again without someone else gobbling down half of her food. It's a good thing that she got her clip before this happened as it would have been very uncomfortable for her with all that hair and the heat. She wasn't happy about getting back into the trailer, but I don't blame her as the evacuation was not a good ride out. We are extremely lucky to have such a large, helpful family, horse community, as well as good friends, including our fellow list subscribers. For example, Mary was right in there offering her place for not only our horses, but for the dogs, and us, too! Last time we were together was about four years ago, at her place, for a clicker clinic. Thank you so much, Mary!! We really appreciate your thoughtfulness and jumping in there with your offer right away. I would have loved to have made it up to Norco, but we couldn't travel that far on Monday night. Gail has been keeping track of stuff for us, keeping us up to date with information, which has been an invaluable service to us. Thanks, Gail! Thanks to all of my friends out there! We really appreciate you! Judy PS: BTW, to those of you who received the note about staying at my brother-in-law's place, along with his 11 children I was wrong he has 12 (TWELVE) kids!!! [IceHorses] Re: Cashel Soft Saddle
Hi: I tried one out found it to be quite bulky under the leg, pulled down on my Iceys whithers put you in a very big chair seat. I also didn't like the thought of non-breathable foam right on my horse, so I would definitely put it over a saddle pad. I know several people who cut a spine channel on the bottom to have less pressure directly on the spine made the rigging multi-point. They say it can be a nice in a pinch saddle once you do these modifications. Without, their horses hated it. The best web-site for this conversion is one by Galadriel Billington (just Google her name it comes up). The best bareback saddle I found was the Little Joe, which I put over a Skito Sensation pad. It has a contour over the whithers is quite nicely made out of high quality suede. The english billets are placed well I can't feel the stirrup rings at all. I have a second one on order as we speak as an alternate to my Sensations. I wore my first one out after about 5 years of steady use in rain heat. One of my guys has an A frame back does better when we alternate the Sensation Hybrid with the Little Joe. Kaaren Jordan http://kaarenjordan.com

Susan, if you're worried about him being cold, but want to give him a 'vent' just clip a strip on the underside of his neck. If you just clip there you shouldn't need to blanket him at all. Then just throw a cooler on him for an hour or two after your ride. Does he have a place to get out of the wind? We have two equines here that can get a chill if they get too wet and haven't had a chance to dry off like right now, when it's half raining and half snowing. I'll have to go check the little one and the old one shortly. If they are shivering at all they go in the barn for the night. Wanda

I know a cool thing Susan! You know here it doesnt get bitter cold so often. On bitter cold rainy nights I had fox in a blanket that was too small for him and left a large area exposed cause I had to use his huge coat on big skin and bones Gallant boy, so I would put the blanket liner under it. Also Gallant boy was so thin I would put the blanket liner on him on cool nites when it really wasnt cold enough for a blanket but he was so thin and had old bones. anyway. i really use the heck outa my blanket liner! Only thing is is doesnt come in a wide range of sizes like a blanket. I think only sm med and large. I think an icey would take a small and after a while the neck stretches out but you could cut the bottom with scissors if it hangs too long. Janice-- yipie tie yie yo

In a message dated 10/26/2007 2:49:24 PM Pacific Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]) I am back home also, we do not have water so I connected with my neighbor's well and we have water. My place is very ash blown and tree branches everywhere. My water buckets were mud. I have all my critters in the house with the AC going. Now that is not the horses. I have two today. one big paint mare that was evacuated from the middle of town. She would not get into the trailer for her Mom. Willie is enjoying her staying. He was such a good boy through the whole thing. What a good pony. He picked up thrush from being in a stall all those days. I need to get some meds for this. I am very tired. Glad you made it all right Judy. Sylvia ** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

[IceHorses] Life Away From Home
You may find your trees have a sudden period of thriving... It's quite amazing how all the plants look! Also, my husband is in the process of extending our grassy areas so that there's less dirt areas around the house. He put in a new section just a few days before leaving, and you know how you're supposed to keep the seed wet while it starts? We'd only watered it a few days, and then it went four days without water, but the grass is beautiful! Simply amazing! Please tell us how each horse did throughout everything. Was it an adventure? Were they stressed? Was Charm upset or on an adventure I don't have much to report in that area. The evacuation trip was not good. It took a very long time, hours to drive 40 miles. The wind gusts were pushing the trailer all over the place. We arrived in the dark at the rodeo guy's place. He had cleared a corral for us, but I didn't know there were llamas there! The next day, when I saw them, I took a picture of Charm over by them, but yesterday I dropped my camera, and at this point can't retrieve any of the pictures. This was a very different experience for the horses, being stuck in a 12 x 12 corral for several days, not being able to wander around. Not to mention the heat of the desert, added to the heat of the Santa Ana winds. The rodeo guy had told me where I could put their grain and where to put their alfalfa when I feed them. I had to explain that they don't get either, and one of them is on special low carb food, so they'd both have to get the same feed. I was afraid that he might give them grain or alfalfa, thinking they were being deprived, but he was respectful of our feeding requirements. The first morning that I went to feed, they heard my voice when I called them, popping their heads up, then they went and stood in the far corner of the corral, turning their butts. They have never done anything like that before, so not sure why they did, unless it was their way of saying that they weren't happy with the situation being away from home. It was the only time that they did it; after that they called back to me when I called them. Charm, as previously mentioned, is a slow eater, so she probably was not happy having Cookie scoff down her own food then head for Charm's uneaten food. They didn't come out of the corral until we left this morning. I didn't have time to ride or do anything else with them. Charm did not want to get back into the trailer, so the rodeo guy and my husband stood behind her with a piece of pipe held against her butt, as a barrier (pipe doesn't rope burn the horse). All very calm and non-threatening; she loaded after a few minutes of coaxing. They are very glad to be home; you can just see it. That's about all I can tell you. Unless you want to hear some of the non-horse stories :-) of living with 11 / 12 kids. Judy

How about something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Roayl-Blue-Polar-Fleece-Horse-Hood-medium_W0QQitemZ330179742857QQihZ014QQcategoryZ47265QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem It's a polar fleece hood, and would cover the neck and chest area - the areas that would be clipped. I was able to put together my little mini videos together with a Roxio program. Here are all the videos I took of Andi with Josh on board after only 18 days under saddle and in terrible wind with 45mph gusts. It's only a little over 2 minutes total. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1zJfoYjwoU I will have to play with the Roxio program more to see what it can do and figure out how to add music. It was so windy, I muted it. I go to see him again on Monday and I get to ride him then!! I am so excited to be able to ride my boy!!
