In a message dated 11/12/2007 5:31:36 PM Pacific Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]) Eight and a half years ago I was life flighted to trauma with eleven broken bones. I went off my Peruvian Paso gelding. I was having a saddle fitting with a ortho flex saddle and the man spooked my horse and then dropped the rope and he bolted with me on top No reins just that darn orthoflex with a horn. That is why I don't like a saddle with a horn. I can lean forward and duck under most objects without a horn. I was afraid to ride after this. My mare was broke to ride and I got on her twice after she was trained and I was terrified. She was a wonderful 3/4 Icelandic, half sister to my gelding. She was not gaited so I sold her. She has never tolted to this day. She was a good 14 hh so not that its tall but Willie is 12.5 hh and I can really get down quick. For some reason I am not afraid of him. I have gone out on trail with him and he is not really broke to ride that well. I just sent him to training. It took me all this time to get back on a horse, eight years. I have all that mane and the ground so close. Trust me I have gotten off really fast on trail when he acted strange. I calm him down and get back on when he feels safe. I took him through the river bottom with all this bamboo and it was really spooky for both of us. Never know what is going to jump out and grab you down there. Ohmigosh. They break my heart. They all do. There is an older Arab gelding at Creekside right now. He's a retired endurance horse and the owner is having him evaluated to see if he might be able to go onto some sort of light work situation. He's a wonderful horse with some "issues" and is sad and confused. He has been ridden by the same man for over 10 years. It's hard for me to understand why his owner wouldn't reward his sweet horse for 10 years of hard work by retiring him in his home setting. Nancy

[IceHorses] Rescue Remedy
Our children's physical therapist - I still have trouble believing she died last month at age 57 - believed strongly in the benefit of using Bach's Rescue Remedy. I have some in the house. And a wonderful woman horse trainer that used to train from Creekside where I board used it and also Be Calm. I always wondered about the dosing. There didn't seem to be much difference between the human dose and the horse, although the patient weight would be very different. Judy, do you know about dosing amounts? Nancy

Also, take long deep breaths. I would pray in the morning before I would be going to ride, too, for peace and calm and safety. If you don't "pray" per se, meditation would be another calming tool. Nancy

She does these great 180* spins that used to leave me in the dust. Boy, did she do a number on my confidence. So for almost a year, I rode my dead broke, yet fun Icelandic cross mare, Foxi, then got up the nerve to start taking lessons on Raven. The lessons (a year's worth - 2 X's a month) got my confience back, then I had Whisper trained and she is not spooky, but does have issues with backing up into whatever is back there when she doesn't want to go forward first or alone. Now I have steady eddie, Andi, who with only 30 days of professional training, is very trustworthy with us alone on the trail together. I understand Raven better, and will ride her on the trail, but only with a lead horse. I guess the key to get over confidence issues on a particular horse is to take lessons on that horse in a safe environment first with a knowledgable instructor. Re: [IceHorses] Nervous on my pony
Oh yeah! I bought a very spooky Arab gelding. He was and is a wonderful horse and my grandson has had a lot of fun riding endurance with him and has done really well. Gabriel had not come off of him, but he has baled off a couple of times. After riding Tali for about six months, I finally didn't stay with him and crashed hard on my back and had two vertebrael compression fractures. I had a lot of pain and a lot of fear. When I went to ride again, I started on a quarter horse gelding so quiet that he was nearly dead. Without any conversation, my daughter and grandson walked beside the horse. Truly, I was petrified. I even cried the first few times I rode him down a very short section of single track trail. After I was okay on Dakota, I graduated to Twist (my Standardbred), then I rode Tali a couple of times in the riding ring. Then I bought the very reactive and energetic Hunter. It just comes back slowly, but you really can't let the fear carry over from horse to horse because I think most horses sense our fear and assume that if they we are afraid, then something is truly wrong. [IceHorses] What's In Your Feed?
>From Diane: R! I was on the phone with a gal from a feed mill in a town about 30 miles from here. Apparently they make their own horse feed over there that the local Cenex stores, including the one in Whitehall will begin to stock. I checked because with gas prices going up, if the feed is as good as what I buy at Stockman's in Osseo (about a 20 mile drive from here), I'd save some gas $$. Well, she said it's locally made and they use a liquid called 419 which is 4% fat, 19% protein in it instead of molasses, which might be okay for fat horses at risk for insulin resistance, except the 419 is made from animal products. So I asked her what kind of animal products and why on earth would animal products be put in horse feed when horses eat grass, not other dead animals. She got kind of bent out of shape and said because it's a good product and she was not going to get into that with me. What the hell?? If these mills/businesses are going to be selling feed shouldn't they be a little more aware of what's going into that feed and maybe they shouldn't be putting dead animal stuff in feed for an animal that does not consume meat instead of getting all bent out of shape over a question? I guess I'll spend the extra gas money and buy my feed in Osseo. At least the protein source in that feet comes from plant proteins, not other dead animals.

You were right. Bruce checked all the commerical turkeys and they all had sodium injected. He did find an organic turkey with no added sodium . This low sodium thing has been quite interesting. I bought a great American Heart Association cookbook and can fix them lots of really tasty foods, but most of what we could buy in the store is very high in sodium Nancy

Yes, Nancy, many of the more common brands inject the turkays with quite a bit of salt - It will tell you on the package how much sodium is in the bird - your best bet is a free range turkey -- Laree in NC Doppa & Mura Simon, Sadie and Sam (the "S" gang) "Yet when all the books have been read and reread, it boils down to the horse, his human companion, and what goes on between them." - William Farley

RE: [IceHorses] o/t my front pasture
We got very excited a few years when wild turkeys began to come around. Now there are so many that it's boring and they're close to being a nuisance. Deer - we never get tired of. Wild turkeys are new here, so we are still excited about them. Yesterday, Cary was out walking in the back pasture with the herd, when a fox came out of the woods into the pasture, just leisurely passing through. Apparently, he didn't notice the spare set of two-legs for a while. Cary said Saga just strolled over to sniff him, and he didn't seem worried at all. He didn't think Saga was trying to shoo him away, but was just checking him out. He said he got within about 50 feet of him, before he noticed a human in the midst. The deer have been in the woods just behind the house all morning, tormenting poor Simon, the English Setter, who is in the fenced yard. Michael doesn't run for the camera, he runs out with a gun to scare them off because they love to eat his mimosa trees. He's kind of obsessed with trying to grow those trees. Not exactly native to Ohio and considered an invasive plant in southern states. They're hard to find in nurseries so he grows them from seeds and starts that we get from my parents tree. The rabbits and deer love to eat them. He puts up little cages to try to keep the rabbits away.
