Re: [IceHorses] Nancy- My Grandpa
Ah Raven absolutely wonderful photos. We made 14 trips in 14 months to a very rural (no electricity) area of Northern Baja during Brenda's adoption. The country and people are wonderful. Many of the men were wonderful horsemen. They also played a mean game of baseball. The orphanage where Brenda lived was up on a hill overlooking a big farming valley. We were there once when there had been a long period with torrential rains. There was a truck stuck in a deep mud bog and the men worked all morning with trucks and tractors and that truck just stayed mired in mud. Finally, someone came along with a horse and pulled the truck out. We took Brenda back twice for visits, but after we adopted the other children, it became too much of a challenge to travel that far. er-yes-thank you for the clarification:) i was more thinking pre-Roman/Roman era druids. but yes, Druidism is a subset of Paganism. todays Druids are somewhat different than the classical druids and don't think torture is in any of thier rites-but not being a druid-i wouldn't know:) i am a pagan having grown up in the country and not being in the military (old Latin slang for hick or civilian-depending on who you talk to:) ) Maggie (who honors the earth and is thankful for the rain in California, blessed be) neat topic:) thanks Raven :D

If he thinks you are crazy, tell hubby to take Dagur out alone by his self. If you ever want your husband to ride with you again, I recommend you don't follow this advice. :o) My husband has not been riding since an unfortunate incident when he went out alone (I had a migraine) and Deacon dumped him and ran back to the farm. -Kristen in MI

THINGS NOT TO SAY TO A HORSE OWNER: Riding isn't a sport, the horse does all the work. If you kept the house as neat as you do the barn, we wouldn't have to look for things. Sure, I can ride. I went riding on my vacation two years ago. Your horse is only worth what someone will pay you for him. Oh - you're going to breed her... how long will it take her to have a litter? Gosh - your horse trailer cost more than your house! Why do you have so many horses? You can only ride one at a time. Geez- It's ONLY a horse! How much did you say you paid for those shoes? Bandit is old and you don't ride him anyway, why don't you sell him? The way you treat that horse, you'd think it was part of your family. I heard that Dr Phil said that owning a horse is good exercise - for the horse. Haven't you outgrown that horse thing yet? Any phrase containing the word hayburner If you spent as much time with your husband as you do your horse, you'd have a happier marriage. My car/boat/motorcycle just sits in the garage until I need it. You have a Quarter Horse? Where's the rest of him? Did you step in something? Your boots stink. Should you still be riding at your age? When can we come to ride? What, I shouldn't wear flip-flops out to your barn? Do you have any clothes besides jeans horse t-shirts? Why do you take lessons? I thought you knew how to ride. You should show that horse who's boss, then he'll do what you want! How many more times are you going to let that horse throw you off before you give it up? Do horses really have a personality? Eew! Horse poop. How do you walk around here? Doesn't it hurt when you fall off? Your barn is cleaner than your house. Imagine how much money you'd have if you didn't have all these horses to feed! You have horses... you must be RICH! Are you sure he can breathe with that thing (girth) wrapped around his gut? Why don't you train him to go outside like a dog, instead of in his stall? You paid HOW much? -- Laree in NC Doppa Mura Simon, Sadie and Sam (the S gang) Yet when all the books have been read and reread, it boils down to the horse, his human companion, and what goes on between them. - William Farley

I ended up ordering 'standard' stalls from System Fencing in Ontario. We'll have to put the wood in the lower half but hubby thinks that won't be a problem. I ordered 2 fronts and 2 side partitions since we'll be using the existing back and side walls of the garage. The stalls are shipped UPS and we were told will take 2 - 4 days depending on weather, etc. Hopefully we'll be able to figure out how to install them. My horses are used to the boarding barn schedule of going in the barn at night so after the move I think I'll continue to do that until they feel at home. I'll take photos soon. V

So--trying to keep the schedule familiar may be more comfortable for them. FWIW, I think the horses that came here that made the transition most easily were the ones who brought a buddy with them. Reddi took a while to settle, but he came with three pregnant mares. (Maybe he felt outnumbered...ya think?) The three pregnant mares just settled right in. Falki and Skjoni got hijacked and thus the trip from Canada (via San Diego) took almost two months instead of the 7-10 days expected...and they didn't seem to miss a beat settling in here. They looked so chipper when they arrived that Cary started calling that whole fiasco Skjoni and Falki's Excellent Adventure. (Thank God the results were such that we could joke about it.) Since Gat and Orri are already friends, and won't have a long trailer ride to recover from, and won't be changing climates, I'd bet they would settle right in, especially if you keep their daily schedule constant at first. And, I'd think it would be harder if they were making an opposite move - say, from a large pasture to a boarding barn type environment. Most horses love making the transition to more room and freedom. Karen Karen Thomas Wingate, NC No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Re: [IceHorses] Re: Portable Stalls
That was certainly our experience, Karen and Virginia. It was also part of the reason we bought two mares instead of the one we went shopping for. Although Yrsa and Tosca were not pastured together at Niels West's at the time we bought them, they were hauled together and they settled in immediately and well, unlike both the horses (Twist and Hunter) who had long adjustment periods.
