Re: [IceHorses] Icelandic Sheepdogs - OT

2007-08-30 Thread toltallyice

I know that back in the 70's they were. We had some farmers and some musicians
from Iceland come and stay at our farm over a period of a few years and they
were shocked that we would even let our farm dog
into the porch.

When we realized how uncomfortable they were around dogs...old Smokie had to
stay outside for the remainder of their visits.
Maybe they were uncomfortable with dogs in general. Understandable since dogs
were banned from the cities and most people were likely not familiar with dogs.
Kind of little I have a bit of a cat phobia my mother passed to me after my
brother and I got scabies from a kitten from a feral litter. To this day I'm
not comfortable with handling unfamiliar cats, and it's taken effort to
overcome my fear of cats and disease so I can handle my cats, and I was too
young to recall having scabies.

Efforts began in the late fifties to save the Icelandic Sheepdog from
extinction. An English nobleman searched Iceland high and low for dogs to enter
a breeding program to save the breed. It was after Sir Mark Watson's effort to
save the breed in the late 1950s that Iceland decided to also make an effort to
save their dog. I find it difficult to believe they were wandering feral and
considered pests in the 70s. Dogs in general--- okay, the ISD in particular---
I don't think so.

[IceHorses] Re: Seizures

2007-04-05 Thread ToltallyICE
Hi Lorraine,

I have a dog here that started having seizures about 2 years ago. He was
having them about once a month. He has lived here for 10 months.

The vet didn't want to put him on anti seizure meds unless they started
coming more frequently than once a month. Apparently once you start the anti
seizure meds you cannot stop.

His seizures since coming here have slowly grown more infrequent. It has
been a long while since he has had one, touch wood!

We live very green lives here, related or coincidence?

I also wonder if maybe he was vaccinated for rabies too frequently, as he
often crossed the US/Canadian Border. Please, please consider donating to
the rabies challenge study... http://rabieschallengefund.com/index.html you
can use PayPal.

I also wonder if he may have got some xylitol.

He had lived in a newly built home, off gassing?

Who knows what has made the difference, but it has been 5 months since his
last seizure. Go Tryggur!

Melamine has been found in effected dogs. ABC News is apparently now saying
the numbers thought to be 1000 or more are now believed to possibly be 10
times that. Clinics are claiming patients are also affected by the DRY

of dry dog food, it isn't known whether it was used in the final product. No
recall has been issued yet. Melamine is used to make plastic kitchen
utensils and as a fertilizer in Asia.

Good Luck! I've only been able to get my hands on one copy! The nearest
Petsmart still has the March issue on the shelves so I'm still hoping to be
able to get another April issue!

Have no idea about scooter dogs! What's that about? Our girls do
 pull a sled.

It is pulling a scooter instead of a sled! You want an all terrain type
scooter though, typically you have to order one as they're not available in
most sporting/bike shops.

Were we younger, would attempt to add an Icelandic
 Sheepdog to our menagerie.
Our Icelandic horses ignore the dogs' antics, but our mule is
constantly vigilant and ready to strike and maim/kill..good news is
that he keeps the coyotes and bears away, bad new is I don't think I
can learn to pony him with the dogs!

Our dogs learned not to cut through the donkey's paddock! But eventually the
donkey learned to tolerate our dogs.

The Icelandic Sheepdogs are a special breed, just like the horses!

Re: [IceHorses] Re: Clicker Training -- Eitill IS a great horse...but...

2007-03-15 Thread ToltallyICE
You had mentioned that one problem you had with clicker training
was that Trausti backed up for hours? after being clicker trained to
back up. After we taught Dari to turn on the forehand (definitely
not with clicker training) he started to turn on the forehand every
time we came to a halt, of course thinking he would please me.

I've had the same experience with teaching a side pass, once they get it...
for a couple of minutes they think that every time I put my leg on them they
should side pass. I don't go on side passing/backing, or whatever, for hours
because I have a mind set that the horse is ruined by some distant training
method I'm doing it right, and by god he'll do it my way.

I just briefly redirect the horses energy and go back to sidepass, multiple
times, eventually the horse realizes that every time I put my leg on doesn't
suddenly mean side pass. It doesn't take letting/making them sidepass for
hours because they think that's what you want if you want to help them
understand the difference. IMO this is a pretty common confusion previously
C/T or not. I think you betray your horses' trust by allowing/making them go
on for hours.

If what you're doing doesn't get the results you're looking for you don't
keep at it for hours, isn't that a pretty basic covenant of considering the
horse in training?

I'm sorry that Trausti and Eitill had to endure hours of backing/sidepassing
due to miscommunication and a rider too stubborn to accept what they were
using wasn't working and try something else, return to successful point, and
go forward with a new plan. Basic horsemanship stuff.

IMO, making a horse back for hours (if a horse backed for hours to his mind
you WERE asking for a back) due to miscommunication, and a mind set that I'm
asking correctly and by god this horse will comply with my request, borders
on abuse, maybe that is too light, it is abuse.

Re: [IceHorses] Prey/Predator

2007-03-12 Thread ToltallyICE
It works if you do it right. Luring an animal into
place with food is bribing. Rewarding it after the
 fact is not.

You have to learn how to do it right. If you just
grab a clicker and go, you may have mugging problems.
You must teach a horse how and where to receive
 the reward.

Exactly!

I remember many years ago clicker training young (at the time) Lilja. I was
fairly new to clicker training. She started wrapping her head around me
looking for the treat while I retrieved it from the treat bag. So I used to
the clicker to teach her to angle her head slightly away from me. It was
quite comical seeing her with her head turned slightly away from me but
straining her eyeballs to see me so she could see if I noticed she had her
head turned away!

I think feeding horses treats indiscriminately, especially if they're
mugging you and they will be, leads to mugging behavior. Feeding treats
while properly using clicker training decreases mugging behavior IME.

clearly through a little view finder. You really don't get to see and enjoy
the event execpt through the photos. I'll see if I got any photos
immediately before or after the photo.

[] Do you have any pictures of him gaiting not in snow? (where we
can see the feet more clearly?)

I'll see what I can find.

Re: [IceHorses] Long Mane

2007-01-12 Thread ToltallyICE
So many horses with regular length mane and tails spend their lives in
stalls, too. my sister lives in Long Island and tells me there are a
fair number of stables there where the horses have no turnout whatsoever,
they live in their stalls 24/7 and only get out when their owners come to
 go
 riding.

IMO, just because it is done doesn't make it okay. IMO, keeping a horse in
a stall 24/7 unless you come to ride is just not an acceptable practice
long mane and tail or not.

I know it is done all the time, that doesn't make it fair to the horse that
is suffering just because so many others are suffering from the same
unnatural conditions.

The thing I find really bizarre is that if that same photo was of an
Icelandic Horse some who are the most vocal that there is nothing going on
would be all over it with claims of abuse??

I wrote up a list of the things that make me feel the horse lives a sad,
unnatural lifestyle. But you know what... if I post it someone will go to
extreme lengths to twist my statements and look for crazy obscure angles to
argue from, and really I just don't have the energy or desire to bat it back
and forth all day.

Again, I see a horse that LIKELY leads a sad, unnatural life, if some don't
that IS OKAY. Again, I hope I am wrong.

My best wishes to Sonny, he is a beautiful boy!

Re: [IceHorses] Re: Holar now gait and shoeing

2007-01-12 Thread ToltallyICE
I understand that for one of the last evaluations, they brought in a
horseshoer from Iceland to shoe all the horses.

There may be a horseshoer from Iceland present, but no one would be
required to use his services.

Re: [IceHorses] Was Holar, now evalutions

2007-01-12 Thread ToltallyICE
If you've spent thousands getting your horse there and he's about to
be disqualified because his shoe has spread from it's original form, yeah,
you're going to be happy there is a farrier on hand to quickly re-shoe
 him.

Which brings up another good point...why should it cost thousands to get
 your horse TRAINED for evaluations?

Karen, I DID NOT SAY anything about TRAINING.

It costs for health papers to travel, fuel to haul 2000 miles round trip,
vehicle checkup to make sure you make it 2000 miles hauling a horse, hotel,
stall rental, farm sitters, missed work, etc., etc.

Ok, now I'm really curious. What's so wrong? The saddle?

Actually I didn't even notice the saddle, had to go back to look.

No Karen I'm looking at the horse, the whole horse, a sad horse.

Maybe I'm wrong, I hope so, he is too beautiful to suffer the type of horse
keeping I imagine he is subjected to satisfy someone's ego.

You see a happy clean horse, I don't, but hey that's okay! :o)

No, Cheryl - Janice has had Jaspar a long time.

Okay wrong horse.

Would you make the same rash judgments about... say - Kalman?

Karen AGAIN, it's not the mane, it is the WHOLE horse.

What would you give for the swelling? Nasi's swelling does not look
 abnormal
to me. It is ok, as long as it is still draining and as long as he is
 getting enough exercise.

Hi Anneliese,

I am sure you have more experience than me with gelding!

I usually go as much or more by feel! But still that seems a little extra
swollen, I may be wrong.

My vet usually has me give bute.

Off to get ready for the long drive to a couple of PennHIP appointments!

What's with your hip? Do you need a replacement?

Yes probably. But my real issue right now is my back, I holding out til they
get good at disc replacements! I can't hold out much longer!

I really need some Wonders worked from modern medicine!

The PennHIP is a method of checking dogs for the potential for Hip
Dysplasia. I am getting PennHIP tests my youngest two Icelandic Sheepdogs
today, then I'm done with screening my dogs for hip dysplasia, for a while
at least!
