another caution :)--- if you hang on and swim with them and you AREN'T on their back... make sure you either do like Denise and have them push (smart Denise) or position yourself safe from paddling hoofs! Man they are really really whapping out some powerstrokes with those feet when swimming! Janice -- yipie tie yie yo

It almost seems necessary to be young, foolish, and be free to do as you like with a sensible (probably grade) horse to really learn to ride and connect with horses, as opposed to taking riding lessons to learn to ride "correctly" to win ribbons. I used to think I was missing something growing up riding saddleless and bridless, jumping over the backs of kitchen chairs with my calm little mustangs, but when I grew up and started buying purebred American horses, I was shocked at the difference.

>>> If you are wondering where this was, it was Antigua and the year was 1980-97 when I worked there tracking satellites. That was where I taught myself how to really ride (bareback). I will attach a pic of me and one of my horses doing this style of swimming. I had a friend with an underwater camera so the nearly unbelievable can be seen. WOW! Great pictures! [delete headers to, from, subj, date] [brackets point >>INTO<<< quoted text] >Also, a lot of people dont know so I am telling you--- when riding in the water you do not USE REINS! Its hard work for them and they really have to have unobstructed breathing when swimming and like humans their heads rise and fall out of the water and they have to be able to concentrate on breathing rhythmically while swimming just as we do!! I know two people whose horses almost drowned because they were not careful about this!< Thanks for the heads up! I've read that before but since I no longer swim my horses, didn't really think about it. I used to like to swim my horses across rivers, but I sort of floated beside them and let them pull me through the water by their manes. In 1980 I was swimming the flooded Animas River in Durango, CO, on my Arabian, but he got snagged on something underwater and disappeared for a long moment. I was going to try to dive down and free him (a really BAD idea) but just then he popped back up. After that, I would only ride them partway into ponds or wade up flooded creeks. Rachel from E KY
Re: [IceHorses] Horse in Water Photo
oooh i hope not! I have ridden in the water so much... swam horses in deep water, been through areas where we found a sudden drop off etc... I would not ride with anyone if their horse was in any sort of tie down even if they went out ankle deep, cause you could always find a hole or drop off! Also, a lot of people dont know so I am telling you--- when riding in the water you do not USE REINS. no no no. A horse has to have its head to swim!!! Please please remember this! Hang on to the horse's mane and steer with legs! sometimes they only have their nostrils out of the water and the water adds weight to reins and without knowing it you can be pulling the nostrils under! Its hard work for them and they really have to have unobstructed breathing when swimming and like humans their heads rise and fall out of the water and they have to be able to concentrate on breathing rhythmically while swimming just as we do!!
