Why aren't you just using a Sensation? V That's a really good question! Seriously, I have people of all sizes and shapes come to ride here, and I have horses of different sizes and shapes. I've sold my last treed saddle (I still have a couple of Wintecs, but I can't remember the last time one saw the light of day.) I sold the BMSS treeless last month, and I just feel like I should have at least one non-Sensation saddle around here, "just in case." Some people do find the Torsions and BMSS more "secure", and that's why I'd like to keep one of that genre. I just bought this saddle to be a spare so to speak, but after I saw how cute it looked on Melnir, I thought I'd try to use it for him. Cuteness is not so important though, if I'm not sure the saddle will work, so I will probably stick to a Sensation for Melnir. I think the Torsion is a good choice for some of the other Icelandic's though - the medium-to-large ones... and if I could use a smaller seat size, one might be fine for him too. Because it is so mountainous where we train, all the horses wear breast plates. Most riders use the Zilco or biothane ones. They interfere with the horse a lot less than a slipping saddle. Some also use a crupper, and I should be one of those. Even though Hunter has nice defined withers, his saddle will still slip forward on a steep descent. . I'm too old for the rodeo that might result from a crupper on this little guy. I have used a crupper on Twist, but he is also a driving horse and quite used to a crupper. Nancy

I noticed that this Torsion saddle slipped a little once before, but I've ridden in it several times. I'm pretty sure it hasn't slipped every time - I think I'm a LITTLE more observant than that. So, what was different today, and maybe the other time it slipped? I checked everything today to see what might have changed. I know I've used the same girth at least once...was it the time it slipped? I can't say for sure. So, I started examining the girth in detail. It's a leather girth, with elastic on both ends. I more often than not use the Wintec stretch-throughout type girths. Would the neoprene-like material of the Wintecs make THAT much difference, compared to leather? Then I noticed something else that I had missed before. This leather girth has elastic on both ends...however, the buckles are attached to the elastic with leather reinforcements...and the leather is stitched down almost the full length of the elastic. There is virtually no stretch left in the girth! I can't believe I was using a no-stretch girth! And I really can't believe that someone would go to the trouble to add elastic ends, and then reinforce them with non-stretch leather...Duh. Oh well, I guess I've learned to check behind every tack design. Just for good measure, I also pulled out the semi-rigid rubber cantle form, and stuffed it with quilt batting type material. I may want to add one as an emergency backup, but I have a feeling if the saddle slipped back this much, I need to change something. Wow, that IS far back! I was surprised when I dismounted and saw it. The girth was probably 3-4 inches further back than where I placed it originally. The saving grace for this ride I think is that 1) the seat is plenty big enough for me so my butt isn't on the cantle at all. And 2) it's a treeless saddle, so it's soft and flexible. This would have been AWFUL had it been a treed saddle I think. But, anyway you look at it, it still put my weight well behind the optimal point for him to balance. I did put my had between the back of the saddle and his back several times during the ride to make sure it wasn't slipping to one side, and to be sure it wasn't rubbing. Thankfully it wasn't. I still feel bad. I wonder what makes a treeless saddle like this one slip back...? I've replaced the rigid pommel with soft, quilt-batting type material. The cantle is the Torsion-supplied rubber-like cantle. I wonder if the semi-rigid cantle is part of the problem - does it sort of "walk backwards" as he moves...? I could try re-stuffing the cantle too. I really like the saddle - but I don't love any saddle enough to hurt my horse! Karen Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED]
