You need to use Drupal Taxonomy here. It's used for creating
categories/terms/vocabularies etc. and can classify your content in the way
you want.

With an Event Taxonomy term, it will be easy to do this. Also views might
help too.

Consider watching videos available at

That's because Drupal has two views of any story - Default and Teaser.

On the homepage, only the teasers are shown by default. Teaser takes some
text from the top of the story/page/node and displays it. Image is blocking
that here.

This is normal behavior of default view.

You can change what appears in teaser view somewhere from the edit page
itself.

And I will suggest using Drupal 7 instead of the oldie and ageing D6, as D7
is out for over 6 months now. Just created a website with it last week, and
loved it to the core.

[fsug-tvm] Add a new User link missing on phpMyAdmin

2011-07-27 Thread Kartik Singhal
Hi,

I recently installed phpMyAdmin on a CentOS 6 box. I logged in as root
through the pma interface and created a new database, when I turned to
Privileges tab for the new db i find a peculiar behavior - there is no "Add
a new User" link there. I have tried a lot of Googling but to no avail.

Earlier it used to be just a matter of creating a new user from the pma
interface and grant it user permissions. Anybody knows what could be the
reason and how can I get it back?

I have not customized any distro myself, so I may not be the right person to
answer this. But I feel, it depends on what you want from your custom
distro.

I read somewhere that there were some problems in using remastersys with
Ubuntu 11.04 and of course, there is this Unity which I didn't find
particularly usable. So IMHO 10.04 is a safe bet. Do try to get some more

Assuming, you correctly put it in .bashrc file, whenever you start a new
session for your interactive shell, it will load the PATH from this file and
let you execute it. You may have to logout and login once for this change to
take effect. Or if you are one of the impatient kinds, you can do a

source .bashrc

to have the immediate effect.

You may want to rename the file to da (without .sh) and add the path of
~/bin to your path variable. You can do this by adding the following to your
.bashrc file in the home directory:

export PATH=${PATH}:/home//bin

One way to go about doing this is to install ntfs-config package and
configure it once to automount all the required ntfs partitions. It's a
graphical tool you just need to click on check boxes to enable or disable a
particular partition.

Other way is to manually edit the /etc/fstab to automount those partitions,
anyway ntfs-config also adds entries into this file only.

I have faced this before. You must be having the old version of firefox
running while trying to run the new one.

Make your you close all other instances of firefox before running the new
version, then it will open the new version only.

I had tried the 2nd link above in the morning as mentioned in my original

[fsug-tvm] Broadcasting live audio stream on intranet

2011-02-10 Thread Kartik Singhal
Hi,

I am trying to setup a system similar to internet radio to broadcast weekly
shows on our campus intranet. Something similar to what Linux Action Show
(Jupiter Broadcasting) does. I want to do a live stream setup though
archives of the show can be made available on a supporting website (again
like LAS).

Till now I have been able to find Icecast as a solution for broadcasting
which needs to be supplemented with some media player and transcoder like
VLC or Winamp to start streaming something. Tried VLC with Icecast but
somehow I couldn't figure out how to make it work.

I want to know if anybody in the list has done something similar before and
may want to share their experience or pointers to where I should look.

Haven't tried Drupal 7 yet, but in version 6, when you go to Primary Links
admin page, you can choose to display a menu item as expanded (or not) by
clicking on a check box. Try doing this in your site, I suppose some similar
setting should be there in 7 also.

Thanks for the detailed info, Milad.

May be NIT Calicut can be of some help with huge number of resources
available in the campus. Of particular interest can be PURNA, a
supercomputing facility installed last December, specifications and some
details here: www.nitc.ac.in/nitc/Super_Computing.pdf

If something concrete is decided regarding the movie, we can talk to the
authorities, I am sure they will agree to support the move as our resources
are usually underutilized at present. Though I am not sure PURNA will be of
direct help with its current configuration as given in the pdf.

We need to be able to access the server from windows clients too in the
other lab, hence we decided for samba. We ran into either problems or
complications while trying to deploy setups like nfs and ldap. And after a
lot of testing with this setup we have not observed any problems. Our only
problem seems to be with resetting the machines.

It is indeed a .desktop file while just runs this script. This is for
accessing the private shares of a particular user which is not same as the
'user' account they use to login to the client.

Clarification: "user" is the name of account which is common for all
machines and is used to login to them and they are supplied a private share
on the server if they need. Otherwise, very conveniently, they can just use
their pen drives for saving their private files without needing a user name
in the lab.

[fsug-tvm] [X-Post] Guest account in Ubuntu 10.04

2010-07-24 Thread Kartik Singhal
We are setting up a lab in our computer center for encouraging students to
use linux. We are already done with setting up Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit on most
of the systems. What we have planned is to give a common underprivileged
'user' account in all the systems with same password that we can tell the
users. Users have the advantage of using their flash drives which they were
not allowed to use on windows systems because of viruses.

The problem of common storage is being taken into account by having a
central storage server running samba. It is available in the form of two
icons on the desktop:
1. Public-Share-on-Ubuntu-Server (which is publicly accessible by everyone
and is permanently mounted on the client as a /etc/fstab entry)
2. Access-Private-Share-on-Ubuntu-Server (which is private to a particular
user)

The second icon is just a shortcut to the following script which allows
users to access their private files after requesting (only on first usage)
for a user name from one of the lab assistants:

#!/bin/bash
> echo 'Enter your username: '
> read un
> nautilus smb://192.168.5.82/$un/
>

What we need though is a method by which we can "reset" the 'user' account's
home directory at each log in, deleting any traces of the previous user's
activity and recreates these two icons. I had created the script to generate
the icons, it can just be integrated to the solution of this problem.

Though the Guest account that does this is available on ubuntu but it is
only accessible when some other user is logged in and can't be accessed from
the main login screen.

The following was taken from ubuntuforums (
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1024371)

Our requirement is similar. After a lot of searching on the net I have not
been able to find a way to do this.

If you have done any similar lab scenario, please share the method on the
list. It would be a great help.

[fsug-tvm] FOSS DVD authoring software

2010-07-13 Thread Kartik Singhal
Need some advice (preferably with user experience) on a good free (or open
source) DVD authoring software. It may run on Windows or Fedora.

My basic need is to burn some homemade videos taken using a Nokia N70 phone
which uses a .mp4 extension (though I have converted them to mpg format
already).

I have already tried GPL licensed DVDStyler but it hangs in between when
used under Windows 7.

Here's the problem. You cannot give the path as above starting with a slash.
Either use full path name (starting from http://localhost/...) or try
removing the leading slash from the path ie .

Do tell us what works for you.

OK agreed, Fedora does have Grub-legacy but the reason why me and David got
confused perhaps is that in the /boot directory both menu.lst and grub.conf
are maintained. As I had been looking for only grub.conf I assumed that
grub2 comes preloaded with Fedora. Indeed for restoring grub I had used the
procedure used for grub2, this may be because Fedora somehow maintains a
compatibility between the two versions.

Initial lines in Fedora 13 grub.conf read:

> # grub.conf generated by anaconda

This was something peculiar as normally in Ubuntu with grub2, editing this
file is not permitted.

Hope this clears everything up.

IMO you were trying to install adobe repo. using the above command.

For installing rpm-fusion:

sudo rpm -ivh

sudo rpm -ivh
http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm

Now you can install vlc using:

sudo yum install vlc

For Adobe:

sudo rpm -ivh

sudo rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-adobe-linux

These above two commands are wrong. You cannot pass a partition along with
-l switch.

The normal fdisk -l command is rightly showing all the partitions.

AFAIK Mint is Ubuntu based and Drupal packages should be available on it in
the repositories, so you can just issue the command:
sudo apt-get install drupal
to install Drupal.

Otherwise check out synaptic if it is available in your distro and search

The default is copying if it is performed between two physically different
partitions AFAIK. However, you can press Ctrl key while dragging to force
copying.

Don't know much about creating DFDs.

For syntax highlighting you can always use gedit. I have used it for my C++
code submission assignments and find it cool.

That's because the script is not asking the root password. It is asking for
your normal user password.
You should understand that when you first install Ubuntu, you are the sole
user and are given administrative privileges. So, your password is asked at
most of the places.
That's why the root account is kept disabled.

i want to change the password, which is asked when we try to open a
> folder as root with full privilage using nautilus script.

You can easily do this from GUI also. Just change password by going to
System->Administration->Users and Groups

OR

you can just open a terminal (from Accessories in Applications) and issue
command
passwd
to change your own password.

Sorry for not giving an exact answer to your problem. But does automatic
signing in really reduce the speed? I have been using BSNL on automatic mode
for quiet some time now.

If you know C++/Java, you will find learning Python as a child's play. Try
these "free" books:
1. A Byte of Python by Swaroop CH, or
2. Dive into Python (just search for the titles on Google)
or you can also check out the tutorials listed on Python's official site.

If you know Linux and if I assume that means you have a command on shell
scripting, Perl will also be very easy for you to learn.

For MySQL, it's not much different than learning any database software, you
should know basic SQL commands (and they are almost similar for MySQL,
PostgreSQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, etc.). These commands can be
easily learnt within a day using any good tutorial on the net.

I don't think you will require any professional courses for these (except
for Perl for which I have clarified my assumption).
