FSUG - Kozhikode is pretty much dead, haven't seen activity in ages.

Had its time when there were people there, like Sajjad. I organized a
meeting when I was there, and had just one attendee other than me. The only
one I know there who might be interested is Noufal.

PS: I moved to Bangalore.

Blame your desktop env, cinnamon for that ;) I will see how this is done

I used to enjoy the convenience of using the command line for
installing packages in debian. Just log into one of the consoles as root

Do you even have a GUI for pacman? Anyway pacman -S package_name works
perfectly fine.

Well, each distro will have its advantages and disadvantages and they
will be differfent for different people too. Thanks anyway.

I used debian sid for ages before moving to arch. I prefer bleeding edge

I managed to set up the simulator after almost a month's research, and
noted down my observations in the attached link, hoping that it will be
 useful for someone in future.

I have tried to structure the articles such that each article is

 you can follow this

First of all, I'm not criticizing you. Please don't feel offended.

I very often come across people asking for help on specific s/w on various
local
lug/foss mailing lists (I follow a lot of them) and I see majority of them
go
without a reply. Its falls into 2 categories.

1. Question is very simple and first hit on Google *will* solve the issue.
The
community will follow the RTFM/LMGTFY rule and let it go. Google for
help or
if you really need help (all of us need it at some point of time), get
into
the project IRC channel. The overhead in an email is much more than a IRC
message, so chances of getting helped is exponentially high on a IRC
compared
   to a mailing list.

2. Question is very specific and nobody really knows about it because the
list
is small. This might be the thing that happened with this specific
question.
Old rule applies here too, but obviously it can be much harder sometimes.

So, why do we need local mailing lists? For local events of course, and
other
notifications. I admit that sometimes its good to get at least some
questions on
an idle mailing list, like FSUG Calicut. So let me use it for that. If
somebody
here wanna meet up, talk about free s/w and have a coffee, lets just meetup
this
Sunday at Calicut beach :) The last meeting had 2 attendees including me,
hoping
to make it better this time ;)

I start my window manager with startx in .xinitrc and added a $ startx in

Find what is starting your window manager and add a hook after that doing

 Hi

Dreamweaver CS5 has now got PHP syntax checking along with its
most userfriendly and famous feature- The Design View.

I have never really used DW, so can you list a few DW features which you
cannot live without?

There is no Opensource alternative anywhere near DW.
[citation required] ;)

Quantaplus is good to some extend and i am using that for development.
I just checked a few screenshots, and I generally hate IDEs with a million
buttons and menus. And last stable release - 3.5.9 / February 20, 2008; 5
years ago

But this still lacks syntax highlighting. And the features that i went
trough
are much less compared to DW.

All you want is syntax highlighting? Gedit can do that pretty well afaik.
Even comes with a few extra features such as snippets etc.

Eclipse and NetBeans have PHP plugins with syntax checking but no design
 view.

Is it a wysiwyg thing for UI? If so, imho its a pretty horrendous way to
design UI now.

I stick to emacs and comes with the best syntax highlighting possible for
almost all languages I know of. It can extend the
conventional syntax colouring and for eg, add bg colors to all color codes
in the code(rainbow-mode). Please see the attached image. I'd suggest
picking vim/emacs/sublime and not eclipse or even proprietary DW unless you
are coding java(which is not coding but auto finishing everything).

My 2 cents.

I dnt have internet at home to install them from online repos.

I see your reason to do this is lack of internet in the host machine.

Pick your fav os and install it. Move local package cache from any
existing machine to the newly installed machine. This might work
better for you than picking a new OS.

Package cache path should be /var/cache/pacman/pkg or
/var/cache/archives or something like that. Depends on your current os

thanx for the info. well a doubt. Is there any way that I can download all
these packages to a DVD , then use this DVD as my repo?

I can use my office internet for this.

Forget about the dvd. Just copy the package cache first to the right
location from another machine. Never update your machine. When you try
to install an app, it finds the local packages, skips the download
and installs it for you. A lot of extra files in the cache never hurts
:)

 together at technopark?

Great!

There is a better provability for these FSUGs to be more active
because of the location, where there are a lot of s/w professionals in
a small area. It reminds me of my own college. Its much easier to have
meetings and discussions in such a place compared to city wise ones

Good luck :)

Can he have another IRC meeting this week? Please stick to the time if you
can. 7PM was too early for a lot of people last time to be present for the
IRC meet.

Time : 9 PM
Venue: #fsug-calicut on freenode
Date: Tuesday? Wednesday?

I think all of us will check our mail at least once in 48 hours for sure.
Or even better why not regular IRC meetings?

 Dear friends,

I am writing this now because I am facing a problem for the first time
and I am not able to find a solution. I have copied text from pdf files
opened in evince and pasted them to get good results so many times. The
only times I could not do it was when they had Malayalam text, whether
from a document created using LaTeX or otherwise. I have so far have had
no problems in copying English text from pdf files.I have done that from
documents opened in evince or kpdf.

But, now I am facing such a problem when I try to copy from a particular
document downloaded from the Internet. I think it was created using TeX
for two reasons. First of all the text shown at the top of the window
says it is a dvi file. Secondly, it was created by the creator of TeX
himself, the inimitable Prof. Donald Knuth himself. I wanted to quote
his words in an article I am writing and thought I could avoid errors
and also make it easier if I just copied and pasted the text. But I got
gibberish when I pasted the text into an editor. I also tried converting
the entire document into text using pdftotext, pdftosrc and pdftabw. But
every time, I got only gibberish. Does anyone here understand what could
 be going wrong?

Thanks for any help or even any pointers that you may give.

Can you share the link to the doc sir? I will give it a try myself.

a mail saying that the FSUG Calicut domain expired. Its a bit sad to
