Anyway, I mentioned that I am a former Loyolite, just to reassure Zacharia that help is at hand. In this group, we assume that all users are proficient with gnu/linux and pass instructions accordingly. What we forget is that some people who request help have just a few days of experience with linux- and tend to become confused when we start taking about mounting, devices, commands etc etc. Given enough time (say, 1 to 2 months), they may become as proficient as any in the group- may even become a valuable volunteer or a developer, but for now we have to show enough patience with beginners in explaining the basics and preventing them from getting nervous. It was just that I didn't want to perplex him at the beginning itself. If you look at some fora, you can see experienced users becoming intolerant of beginners, asking them to go and learn first. Very often, they just drive beginners away from FOSS. Atleast, this group's attitude is very beginner friendly. The fact is that many questions raised in many fora including this have ready-made answers if you know how to google diligently. But if people knew how to find all answers and solve all problems themselves, they simply wouldn't need fora like these. Sharing knowledge, ideas, experience and work is the whole idea behind FOSS, isn't it? Regards, Gokul Das -- V. Wow! That's some compliment, coming from you, sir! I am really flattered! In reality, Zacharia reminded me of the circumstances under which I started experimenting with FOSS and GNU/Linux. That is, when I was a +1 Loyolite. During that time, I was completely inexperienced and used to experiment extensively- often failing with disastrous consequences and drawing a lot of flak from my parents. I was desperately searching for help. But I was convinced that FOSS would provide me an unparalleled opportunity to learn. Needless to say, I was right - it went so far as to secure me a job! Today, I shudder with fear to think of others facing the same difficulty. Luckily, groups like these are here. Still, I have my fair share of respect for all beginners - for showing the courage to take the plunge. Sometimes, not even the best students don't show that quality of learning. As for me, working with people in this group is a privilege. Regards, Gokul Das On May 16, 7:50 pm, V. Sasi Kumar sasi@gmail.com wrote: Well said, Gokul! Hi, An online call centre for FSUG won't be such a hard proposition. But only if XMPP multi user chat (for conference chats) and Jingle (for initiating peer to peer voice/video chat) were supported well on GNU/ Linux systems. I guess we will have to wait till then. And one more clarification. My real name is Gokul Das, not Visakh. Visakh was my official name a long time back before it was changed. I adopted Visakh as my alias back when I joined this group. At the time, I was just a lurker, and didn't want to be identified easily. So, if you call me home, please identify me as Gokul. The name Visakh tends to confuse everyone else at home. [fsug-tvm] Re: introduction
Hi Jikku, I helped Zacharia over phone and IM yesterday. But we had a problem. He has an Nvidia gforce graphics card and Hardy indicated that restricted driver for it was available. I asked him to install it- but as soon as it was finished, the system started suffering recurring kernel panics. This is probably some problem with the proprietary driver. I have asked him to disable the driver as soon as he reboots. But one step remains- the xorg.conf should have been backed up (xorg.conf.bak or something) and replaced by the driver utility. We need to restore the backup. I couldn't do this due to the problems. But this will also mean that the display will revert to 800*600 resolution. So you will have to add the correct resolution to xorg.conf file. I hope you can help him with this. If you need help with this, please do contact us. Hai, The OS you are using is outdated... Why don't you use new version of ubuntu??? On Sun, May 10, 2009 at 9:45 PM, Visakh gokulda...@gmail.com wrote: Hello Zacharia. Its nice to see a Loyolite here. I am a former Loyolite and there are quite a few here. If you need help, the community will be happy to provide it - just choose the correct topic name. However, if you need personal help, you can add me to your Google talk friends list (just tell me if you need me to do it). Seeing that you are a beginner in GNU/Linux, you will find it very helpful to read 'Ubuntu help'. It is a very beginner friendly manual to using Ubuntu. I see that you are confused with instructions given to you here. When somebody asks you to 'type something in'- they will usually be asking you to enter a 'terminal command'. For that, you need to open a 'terminal'. This is commonly done from menu [Applications Accessories Terminal ]. Also, 'root' is the username of the all powerful administrator in a GNU/Linux system. So most systems have a 'root' user and a root password. But for Ubuntu, root is disabled by default for security reasons. Instead, if you want to enter a administration command (eg: mount /dev/cdrom), just prefix it with 'sudo' command (eg: sudo mount /dev/cdrom). Then you will be asked for your normal password. If you need detailed help with mounting drives, just contact me on IM.
