[Ilugc] Linux Package Dependencies

2008-10-09 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

I do not have a net connection all the time, so I have configured local yum
repos. I even tried rsyncing one of the livna repositories. I have all the
packages listed in one of the Livna repos. However now that I am not
connected to net, I tried to install some packages and I still get
dependencies error.

Can someone guide me on the best way to install packages with no dependency
errors. Is there a site that provides the dependencies along with the
package src codes or rpm packages.

Hi Rahul,

I have already made this repo. However the issue is that still I get
dependencies errors. If you can guide me to some site, that provides all the
'lib' packages, that would be very helpful.

Re: [Ilugc] Double IP in single network interface card

2008-10-10 Thread Ashish Verma
You will need to make sure that the aliasing module is compiled into the
kernel. Because after certain release of kernel (not sure which) aliasing
does not get compiled by default. Atleast the kernel used in Fedora 9 and
Centos5 does not contain that by default. So please check on that.

[Ilugc] Clarification on Distros

2008-10-16 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

I would like to have clarity on what the real difference is between
different Linux Distros. What exactly makes one better than the other.

Do the distros have differences at the kernel level itself.
Is it only the applications packages that are included that make the
difference.
How does one distro be more secure and/or robust than the other. Is it that
the codes used for applications (iptables, apache etc etc) is different.
Are distros like Debian more secure only because they have fewer/no GUI
apps.

I hope I could explain what I am looking for. Would request your advise on
this.

2008-10-16 Thread Ashish Verma
In addition, ppl say UNIX is more secure and robust than linux. On what
basis is this said. Is this again related to the code used in various apps
used in UNIX. If two servers, 1 UNIX, 1LINUX are being used to host web
server. Where does one score over the other.

2008-10-16 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi Kapil,

I asked that not with intention to start any heated discussion or argument.
I did not even mean to say anything is better than the other. It was for
purpose of my knowledge. Since these things generally come up when a grp of
guys are discussing, it arises such questions. I only request for inputs
rather than raising conflicts. Any distro/os may be better than each other.
However since Linux and Unix are the one's with similar structure, I had
this doubt.

[Ilugc] EXPORT Command

2008-11-20 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi All,

I need to set an environment variable. Following is what I did.

TMPDIRECTORY=/usr/local/tmp_directory

env |grep TMPDIRECTORY

echo $TMPDIRECTORY
/usr/local/tmp_directory

export TMPDIRECTORY
set |grep TMPDIRECTORY
 /usr/local/tmp_directory

env |grep TMPDIRECTORY
 /usr/local/tmp_directory

Now I logged off as root as I had su 'ed in and then run the below commands.
Now when I checked in the env of the non root user, the value was not there.
Again I su 'ed and the variable was not set in there either. I need this
variable to stay in the system even after I log off as any user. How can I
make a variable stay. This variable is used in certain scripts to store tmp
content. Please advise.

Re: [Ilugc] EXPORT Command

2008-11-21 Thread Ashish Verma
What I meant was whether the new env variable needed to be added like the PS
variable or we could just add it like it is done at the shell.

The PS variable in the file is declared as below.
if [ "$PS1" ]; then
case $TERM in
xterm*)
if [ -e /etc/sysconfig/bash-prompt-xterm ]; then
PROMPT_COMMAND=/etc/sysconfig/bash-prompt-xterm
else
PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne "\033]0;${USER}@
${HOSTNAME%%.*}:${PWD/#$HOME/~}\007"'
fi

But in my case since I didnt require any ifs and thens, I actually did what
you said, opened the file and added the line as the second last line in the
file and then sourced it. This solved the purpose.

TMPDIRECTORY=/usr/PATH/tmp
# vim:ts=4:sw=4

Ashish

Hi Girish,

Why I set the parameter in /etc/bashrc is because, this file gets executed
for every user at login. Further, I also did "source" of the file for the
already logged in users. This made the variable available for all the users.
Please suggest what else should /could be done.

Hi Ramar,

If I have understood u right. You want the output from the below table to
be  like

tablex

emprefby
kumar raj
raj  ram
ramragu
ragu   rajesh

kumar was refered by raj, who was referred by ram, who was referred by ragu,
who was referred by rajesh
Try the below and see;

declare
var1 VARCHAR(20);
var2 VARCHAR(20);
var3 VARCHAR(20);
var4 VARCHAR(20);
var5 VARCHAR(20);

begin

var1=kumar;
   loop
 select refby into var2 from tablex where emp=var1;
 select refby into var3 from tablex where emp=var2;
 select refby into var4 from tablex where emp=var3;
 select refby into var5 from tablex where emp=var4;
dbms_output.put_line
var1 || "was referred by" || var2 ||  "who was referred by" || var3
||   "who was referred by" ||  var4 ||  "who was referred by" || var5;

 end loop;
end;

[Ilugc] How to compile module

2008-12-11 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

I have a pcnet32.c file. I want to make a module out of it. What should I
do. The below link requires me to make a make file. I don't know how to do
that. Please advise.

http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/build-linux-kernel-module-against-installed-kernel-source-tree.html

Re: [Ilugc] How to compile module

2008-12-11 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

I dont know why this is not working for me. I was able to compile the hello
world module without errors.

I got the below error:

make -C "/lib/modules/2.6.25.14/build" M=/root modules
make[1]: Entering directory '/usr/src/linux-2.6.25.14'
scripts/Makefile.build:217: target '/root/pcnet32.c' doesn't match the
target pattern
Building modules, stage 2.
MODPOST 0 modules
make[1]: leaving directory  '/usr/src/linux-2.6.25.14'
I got the pcnet32.c file from
/usr/src/linux-2.6.25.14/drivers/net/pcnet32.c. 2.6.25.14 is a compiled
kernel.

Why is it that pcnet32.c did not get compiled when the kernel was compiled?
or when the modules were compiled?

Regards,
Ashish

Re: [Ilugc] How to compile module

2008-12-11 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi Santosh,

The problem was in the make file. I had put pcnet32.c instead of .o. The
module has now been compiled. Now I got 4 files

pcnet32.ko - I placed in /lib/modules/2.6.25.14/kernel/drivers/net

What should I do with the rest. What are these for? I found similar file
types in the /usr/src/linux-2.6.25.14/(different folders)

pcnet32.mod.c
pcnet32.mod.o
pcnet32.o

[Ilugc] fedora9 - cannot bring laptop out of sleep after closing lid

2008-12-15 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

I am unable to bring my laptop out of sleep after I reopen the lid. I have
to restart the system after I close and open the lid. I tried the steps in
the below URL, but it did not help.

http://www.linux.com/articles/54610

If however, the laptop sleeps due to long inactivity, I can bring it back by
hitting any key. Please suggest.

but then got the below error.

Try `stop --help' for more information.
/etc/init.d/tata: line 36: status}": command not found

I do not run the NetworkManager instead just use the network service.

Please help.

Hi Kenneth,

I had inserted the SIM in wrong direction. Can you tell me whether any IF

that I have got an IP and DNS, however the resolv.conf does not show the new
DNS and also I am unable to ping anything.

My issue was with the "route" set up. The system was using NIC instead of
the modem to send packets. So I changed that and I was able to use
everything fine.

Hi,

Below is what all I did.

1) Inserted the Modem
2) Using the relevant output from /proc/bus/usb/devices I ran the below
command:

#modprobe usbserial vendor=*0x*1b7d product=*0x*070a

2) Ran the wvdialconf command. This generated a /etc/wvdial.conf file

My wvdial.conf file looks like below I added a parameter or two from the
internet:

[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = USB Modem
Phone = #777
ISDN = 0
Username = internet
Password = internet
Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
Baud = 460800
; SetVolume = 0
; FlowControl = Hardware (CRTSCTS)
; Dial Command = ATDT
Stupid Mode = 1

3) My #lsmod |grep -i usb output is as below:

usbserial  40272  0
hci_usb23068  2
bluetooth  59044  8 bnep,rfcomm,l2cap,hci_usb

*I am not sure whether it is a must or not, but I removed the usb_storage
module because per the internet, It creates conflicts on the device or
something like that.

4) Since I had other netwok devices setup too, my "route -n" showed that
access to 0.0.0.0 be made via my bridge device kbr0. So I deleted that entry
and made another one indicating that 0.0.0.0 be access via ppp0 device.

5) I ran the wvdial command and my device started to work. I got an IP and
DNS IPs. I also added the opendns IPs to the resolv.conf file.

Note: I do not use the NetworkManager service instead I use the network
service. I guess the NM service automates most of the things. Since it is
changes some of the setting by itself, I do not use it.

What is the error that you received. Did you first boot theVM with -usb
option. If yes, then you can use the add usb from host using usb_add devname
at the qemu prompt.

You can use the SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.9 to copy files using SSH. I guess
there is a similar software for putty too.

I am not sure of this error. I would check if the kqemu module has been
modprobed before I start the VM.
I actually use the kvm module. You can use the qemu-kvm command prompt if
you have kvm_intel or kvm_amd modules.

When you boot the VM, press ctrl+alt+2 to get to the qemu prompt. At the
(qemu) prompt type info and you will get all possible commands.

Are you using a 64 bit version of Debian. Virtualbox gets installed by force
on a 64bit OS, however, to get it working it requires 32 bit shared
libraries, my fedora has similar 64 bit one's so I was not able to use
Virtualbox and I could not locate all the packages required to facilitate
the 32bit support. One thing I am going to try is, to install a rhel4 on a
VM and the install vbox on that rhel4 and then copy over the libraries to my
host system. That may work.

[Ilugc] major/minor number

2008-12-26 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

I have a memory card for which I have forgotten the password. I used the
format card option available in the phone and was still not able to access
it. Now I am trying to access it via my system, however when I insert the
card, dmesg shows the below error:

mmc0: error -110 whilst initialising SD card

Now I thought I could access it by using mknod and specifying the major and
minor number and then mounting it or else formatting the device using fdisk.
Or even dd'ing zero's to the initial bytes of the device.

Do you think this is a sane idea.
If yes, I want to know how to find out the major and minor number for the
device.
If no, what should i do.

I found device related information coming up in the below path, It contains
many files and folders like drivers and devices. When I try to grep for
major or minor, I get nothing but errors; lot of errors about loops and
symlinks.

/sys/class/mmc_host/mmc0

[Ilugc] BASH Script

2008-12-31 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi All,

I am completely new to this field. I only have some knowledge of C and other
basic languages like HTML and javascript. I am trying to write an
interactive/automated script to start the VMs on my machine.

So a part of that is to list all the iso's in my system and let the user
select which one to use in the VM. I have done the following:

list_iso()
{
varX=CD
varY=0
locate *.iso > /temp/cdromlist
cat /tmp/cdromlist | while read count; do
varY=$(expr $varX + 1)
echo "$varX$varY is $count" # this displays as CD1 is /vms/rhel4.iso
#Assign the value of the path to unique variable
varZ="$varX$varY # This makes varZ equal to CD1
$varZ=$count # Now this should make a variable CD1 hold the value
/vms/rhel4.iso just like the path variable but I get error for this
indicating "No such file or directory".

...
}

Please advise

[Ilugc] sort

2009-03-11 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

I have a file with 2 columns. First lists the space of the folder and the
second the folder name. Sample below:

2.1Mtest1
220Ktest2
2.2Gtest3
2.2Mtest4
22M test5
22M test6
2.2Mtest7
230Mtest8
232Ktest9
I want to sort the file based on the space usage. Currently it is just
sorting based on the number. Is there a way to sort it the other way round.
Like making a stream editor first read each line upto a point it reaches a
non-numeric character then if the following character is K then divide by
1024, if it is G multiply by 1024 and so on and then sort the file. Is this
possible. I do not know to work well with stream editors and regexs'. Please
advise.

I was able to load the pcf file. However, how do I start the communication
to the vpn server. I mean in Windows, there is another device created for
the VPN connection. How does it work here. How do I route traffic for the
specific IP addresses to the VPN box.

Manually download the packages from sites like:
http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=libIex.so.6
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/3/srodzaj/1/search/libIex.so.6

[Ilugc] httpd auth

2009-03-24 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

I configured a directory in Fedora10 Apache to use basic authentication. Now
when I try to access that directory, it again and again reprompts for
username and password. The root for this host is /mount/repositories and the
auth file is kept in that root.

Any clues.

I have already configured auth which seems similar to what is mentioned in
this page only that I have configured in httpd.conf file instead of
.htaccess file. Yet, I am facing the issue or continuous prompts.

I tried that first, I even tried placing the file in different locations.
Changing the permissions and ownership. It just doesn't seem to work.

Can someone using fedora10, try this and see if this issue occurs for them

Aren't these parameter required when using .htaccess file. Are these
required when the access is controlled from the httpd.conf file also. The
above configuration works in Fedora9. Am not sure, but this may either be
change in functioning of Apache or a bug.

 Hi,

What qualifies a system to be in a domain?
How do we say that a system is in X domain?
Does its host name being x.y.com put it in y domain? or
Does the system having a entry in the DNS for a domain put it in that
domain?
 Can one system be in multiple domains?
If yes, how does it help / make a difference?

A FQDN is supposed to be a concatenation of hostname and domain.
 Say I have a system with IP 10.0.0.1.
hostname command shows
*server.myowndomain.net*

In My DNS I have an entry (my DNS is for domain serverpool.net)
*10.0.0.1  IN  A  dhcpserver*

now what is my FQDN?

Further my system is going to be referred to by other systems by what ever
name is in the DNS. Then what is the user of hostname mentioned locally.

Then there is NIS domain etc!!! All this confuses me. Someone please
clarify.

Which kernel version are you using. This was a bug in the kernel (I believe

then KVM is considered lite and gives good performance too. Xen run as bare
platform gives many many enterprise level options, but requires two systems,
one for the server, one for the console, unless you run X on the server

But then, the process should have been started in screen. I started it
directly in a pty and closed that pty.

Is there no way to restart it without reattaching it. Or opening a new pty
which is now of the same number as the closed one and doing something to
attach the process to the new pty.

Hi Roshan,

I tried the --partial option, and wanted to share what happened so that if
someone else happens to use this option, he does not get confused based on
size of the synced file.

1) rsync -av usern...@server.com:/path/file* /local/dir/
//This started of a process of rsync
//A file by name file.iF80Tt was created in /local/dir/

2) VPN got disconnected and the transfer seized to continue, though the
process was still listed in the ps

3) rsync -av --partial usern...@server.com:/path/file* /local/dir/
//This started off another download, because I did not mention the dest
file name.

*) rsync -av --partial usern...@server.com:/path/file*
/local/dir/file.iF80Tt
   //this did not work because I had used wild card to indicate multiple
files and given single dest file.

4) rsync -av --partial usern...@server.com:/path/file*
/local/dir/file.iF80Tt
//This did not start another download, however the size of file.iF80Tt
did not increase either.

5) I killed the 1) process then the 4) process, now when I checked the size
of file.iF80Tt it had actually increased.

So I guess when you use the --partial option, the ls -lh command does not
display updated size. However if you kill the process and check the size, it
would have actually increased.

To: ILUG-C

Hi,

when I run startx on the console I get the below error. further, there is no
Xorg file listed and many of the normal files are missing. I have pasted all
the packages beginning with x in the laptop, below the error. Please advise.
 .

In addition to my previous mail, I am able to vnc to the server form a
different server and the xfs service is running too. HOwever I am not able

Its now working, I guess X was just taking time to startup. When I left the
latptop for sometime after startx, it came up in the second console (the
normal message). Do you know the file that controls as to which console
which terminal should comeup. Like now the X is coming in second tty. How
can I make it come in the 7th console and make the second console back to
the messages console.

[Ilugc] dns round robin

2009-05-10 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

Scenario:

Accessed/logged in a web server using HTTP. Now when attempting to upload a
document, I get "Oops! This Link Appears Broken", which appears to be a
Google message for 404.

Is it possible for a browser to attempt to make connection on a different IP
mentioned in DNS for a server, for the purpose of uploading documents, where
there is already a connection established when logging in.

[Ilugc] Send mails to a specific server

2009-05-21 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

Is the below possible, if yes how?

1 mail server ("ms") has been set up in a way that all mails sent to it go
to a server ("fs") that filter the mail. Once filtring is done, the "fs"
server delivers the mail to "ms" server.

Now the admin of ms server wants that mail relayed by a specific mail relay
server ("mls"), be directly delivered to it, without going through the
filtering process.

I am not sure if this can be done by making alterations in the DNS, as it
can hold MX record for either "fs" or "ms".

Hi,

Would request someone to clarify the meaning of delegation-only and

Hi,

Would request someone to clarify the below terms.

1. SCSI / IDE / SATA / Firewire / UHCI - Are these types of 1) cables, 2)
disks, 3) interface on the disk, 4) connectors on the mother board (like
PCI) or 5) standards / protocols (some say scsi is a set of commands)

2. Controller - is it something on a peripheral or on the motherboard.

Basically how do u classify a device under these terms.

Hi Karan,

I did google this and infact googled a lot. However, the more I googled,
more I got confused. There are some sites like webopedia that have listed a
single page with explanation of different technologies, that however did not
answer my queries. I was looking for some-one to explain in a simple easy
and straight forward manner.

[Ilugc] Kernel crash

2009-07-03 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

I am running some fedora vms on a xenserver. These vms always seem to be
crashing for some reason or the other. Of late, I had installed netbeans and
was trying to run a web application. I noticed that the java process was
taking up a lot of memory, somewhere around 58%. Then all of a sudden the
kernel again crashed. How can I take the crash dump from such a machine and
whom should such reports be submitted to.

I have attached a file with what was displayed in xen-console of the VM.

Is the below a public key or a signature. I have used openssl and the keys
it generates indicate that the file is a public key. And moreover, the key I
created using openssl could encrypt very small documents. Can pgp keys do
more than that.

[Ilugc] pxe boot - tftp file not found

2009-08-13 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

I am trying to setup a pxe server, however the client always throws the file
not found error, I have tried many config changes, however to no avail. I
have attached the various outputs. Based on the tcpdump it seems that the
client is able to make tftp connection and the path to the pxelinux.0 file
is also taken correctly. Then which is the file that the client is unable to
find. Please advice.

[Ilugc] httpd logs

2009-08-25 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

How are the logs in /var/log/httpd/* and /etc/httpd/logs/* linked.

Both the logs contain the exact same information and are updated in the same
manner,
Neither is a symlink of the other,
Inode count for both shows 1.

and yet, they do not contribute to the filesystem size as two separate
files. Say the file size of error_log in /etc/httpd/log/ is 50G. The same
file in /var/log/httpd also displays 50G, however the / filesystem shows
only 65G.

Ashish

What is the size of the entire

What I meant was, whether you knew the size of the "update" directory.

[Ilugc] Backup only used portion of filesystem...

2009-08-25 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

I have a linux installation on a physical machine. The filesystem has been
created on 320GB of disk. I want to create a image of it and create a copy
of the system. How can I do that, the second disk I have is 80 GB. I have
tried partimage, it backs up only the used space, however when recreating,
it requires the original space. Is there any other way.

[Ilugc] net.ipv4.ip_forward

2009-08-31 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

I have two systems, 1 server and the other client.
The server has 2 interfaces, 1 in 172 network and the other in 192 network.
In the client I have configured the server as the default gateway. There is
only one interface on the client configured wiht 172 network.

Now, whether or not I set the net.ipv4.ip_forward to "1", I am able to ping
the 192 interface from the client on 172 network. *Is this expected
behavior?* There are no iptables or anything of that sort configured.

Ashish

That is exactly what is happening. ip_forward is set to 0. The server has 2
interfaces 172 and 192. Another system is connected to 172 and has the first
system set as the gateway. when I ping the 192 interface from the client
system, I am getting a ping response.
