Re: [Ilugc] [commerical] Low cost open source networking products - ready to use

2015-03-29 Thread S Suresh
I've done this is in the past. (2000-2002) and was part of a embedded
Linux
district team. Built a device and a product. Used to convert old PCs into
 gateways too.

Look up LEAF firewall. pFSense looks to be the best packaged version right
now for firewall. You must look at a gateway package and then choose the
platform. Eg one that supports firewall, proxy, AV, qos, 802.1x etc

You'll find hardware with 5.to 8 Ethernet ports on a book PC from Taiwan
or
even bare metal networking boxes, as is the trend now from Dell, HP etc.

You can write to me or talk to me if you want to discuss this further.
thanks mohan. i do have similar experience. i think the cost of taiwan book
pc may be higher. i need to explore. if the cost is under control , then
thats the best fit. i will contact you to discuss further on this topic.

Oh, one more thing - stay away from low cost. The market is crowded
with them. The products mentioned in my previous post are very cost
competitive and beating them at their game will be a bit difficult
IMO. Instead focus on high value and price your product accordingly.

+1.

The focus need to be on creating value for the product than saying it
as 'low cost product' in the market.

ok. the meaning of low cost is the relative word comparative to the
proprietory solution such as cisco, juniper. we are not going to sell it to
5k which is meaningless. i never compromise on quality either hardware
selection or sw selection. the great adv is we dont have software cost.
how to bring down the product cost is the challenge , the major coat
portion depends on hardware integreation cost and admin, support costs. i
believe we can make entry level product at Rs.15k+ for SME customer with
no compromise on quality and support.

 Hi,

Currently we dont have open source networking products available in
indian market. mostly we need to buy from global market. For example,
PFSense/openWRT firewall/routers not available (out of the box).

I am working on this project opensource firewall/router/voip/etc
(pfsense, monowall, openwrt/opensips etc) porting in to the Desktop PC
 targeting SME customers.

 Please suggest your views.

Also, I am interested to join hands established people/company for
this project. If you are interested, please mail me.

First thing to consider in product development is the support
structure and how are you going to deploy bug/security fixes to the
 installed base.

The India based products like Cyberoam, Gajshield, Quickheal etc.;
they import the hardware appliances in volumes, brand them with their
own labels and install a custom Linux image developed by them **but**
they have a support structure (phone, email, web forums, firmware
updates etc.)

I don't how many people you have in your company. IMO, even for a
company with 10 technical people, the above list is too much to
chew and digest.

Focus on one or two for production which should include a support
structure as mentioned above.

Also, I am interested to join hands established people/company for
this project. If you are interested, please mail me.

I am also working on a similar concept with a different approach.
Contact me if you are interested.
