Recommended for the level of support you'll get on this list or the VK's lists, though as Raj would tell you its not for the weak hearted. Then there is commercial cpanel, ensim, plesk of which cpanel is a relatively clean design. ensim is a cross between a VSD/Web-based control and difficult to troubleshoot. Plesk is not maintained well. There are a couple of others out there on Sourceforge. Webmin + Usermin though not oriented towards webhosting is a pretty much robust and excellent solution. I would put it as Free Memory is actually the memory that is unusable ( immediately) by the system/user programs. They get all the memory from cached memory and buffers. So actually the real measure of free memory would be $actualfreememory = $freememory + $buffer + $cached This behavior can be in part modified by changing the kernel parameters to change the over commit memory algorithm to do not over commit. I dun think this is the case, Windows too caches pages and u can conduct various experiments to check that. What I doubt is the reading that taskmanager shows ..may b it only show the app in use and not the cached pages, while linux does show the actual state of the memory .. Assuming the uptime of the server is critical why would you not want to have the whole setup on RAID ? You donot need to have a /boot partition unless you are using a very old motherboard. A typical MySQL specific RAID setup is given below : /dev/ida/c0d0p1 2.0G 946M 967M 50% / none 1008M 0 1008M 0% /dev/shm /dev/ida/c0d0p6 1008M 17M 939M 2% /tmp /dev/ida/c0d0p726G 13G 12G 50% /var/lib/mysql /dev/ida/c0d0p2 2.0G 40M 1.8G 3% /var/log For me all data sits in /var/lib/mysql all applications sit in / what I definitely want is that no temporary files or log should grow so big that it renders my server unusuable. Which is why /tmp and /var/log are separate partitions. Note the setup shown above is a Hardware RAID5 setup but the partition structure is more important than RAID level being used.
