i recommend just one banner, in the blue one. the text should say
"www.Linux-delhi.org" and should have the maharaja tux illustration

that's it.

Hi,

Quick update on what's happening at the ILUGD participation in LA2004.

- - Had a meeting yesterday to thrash out some of the logistics for our
participation in LA2004. Tarun (Dua) will be sending a detailed mail
on the discussions.

- - ILUGD is now one of the official sponsors and supporters of LA2004,
thanks to quick work by Alolita and Bob.

- - We're trying to get some more space at the event -- 6' x 6' isn't
really enough to show everything that we have planned.

- - Volunteers. Please read Tarun's mail and see if you can help in any
of the demos that are planned.

- - Monitors. We have enough computers for now, but without monitors.
If you can spare your good-quality monitor for 3 days (OK, 3.5 days)
please let the list know.

planning to participate in the keysigning event. The URL is

[ilugd] Tips on debianizing an LFS system ?

2004-02-08 Thread Bhaskar Dutta
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,
Does anyone have any home-brewed scripts to debianize an LFS system?
I am using a heavily optimized linux system based on LFS 5.0 with kde 3.2.
Being a debian user before I switched to LFS, I couldn't resist dpkg and apt.
Package management isnt very easy with the lfs system and I dont really like
Prometheus - (a pkg mngr for lfs). Hacking the /var/lib/dpkg/status manually
is a big pain but it can sure be fooled to resolve dependencies. Any tips on
this matter from the debian geeks?

And yes, I have already visited blfs-support mailing list, #blfs on irc and
asked google. No soln till now. I was told that the main developers at
linuxfromscratch.org are majorly busy.

Regards,
Bhaskar

The email can be [EMAIL PROTECTED] !

Since that's my registered email at the ILUGD.
had changed to the hotmail one because i was being blocked by outblaze, for
whatever reason, but now back again.

However, if we need the poster by the 11th, we need to be a little quick with
the idea part. I will enquire the price for the cloth poster tomorrow mornin
and post it on here.

As far as printing the poster is concerned, we would not need more than 5
posters, i suppose, on our stall. Which i can print from my desktop printer
gratis. Second, i will want to create a bigger poster as well, (than just A4),
so that we have a main attention catcher, which i will get printed from
somewhere, and i dont mind bearing the cost for it.

However, i need the ideas for the content and design quickly from everybody.

[ilugd] poster

2004-02-08 Thread LinuxLingam
>
> Send me the details for the poster.
> I'm waiting for another couple of hours.
>

at the preparation meet, we decided people at the meet decide on the
text they want to see on posters, and will send a soft copy to me, which
should really be sent directly to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
who is mairu gupta, who phoned-in at the meet and said please count him
in for all things related to poster-design.

mairu will then design, using just text and typography under gnulinux
(sodipodi, scribus) posters, some of them could be A4, some could be
double A4, in black-and-white or color, outputted to desktop printers on
plain sheets, and pasted at the stall. for some raj mentioned you could
try a tiled printout (that scales up design across multiple sheets).

parallally, mairu needs to find out how much does a banner cost, the one
that is usually hand-painted on cloth. this banner is a one-time
investment, should fit on a 6 ft x 6 ft stall (which means it could be
about 6 ft in width, and perhaps 2 to 3 feet in height).

the banner should be all-purpose. it should have the text
"www.linux-delhi.org" and the maharaja tux penguin illustration.
we could use this at other meets.

once mairu finds out the price, which should be monday afternoon max,
the mailing list could decide if it is agreeable and go ahead with it.

those at the meeting decided we should not go for large-format plotted
outputs, as they cost a huge sum of money. raj said that a volunteer
could print to his desktop printer gratis. others recommended bureaux in
nehru place and other places that charge rs 30 or so per printout.
mairu, please decide what is the best option.

all queries for poster and banner are solely with mairu.

:-)

Hmm, afraid of what, conspiracy theories? Why should DoT place a
computer at any ISP? What sort of connectivity does it have? Do you
have the phone number and login/password for this computer? Can this
computer intercept traffic between the RAS and the gateway router, or
the gateway router and the 'net? What software is this computer
running? Can it crack my PGP encryption? For that matter, can it
even crack 40-bit RSA in real-time?

Given the state of things in this country, sounds more like a device
to answer a parliamentary question of the form ``Can the honourable
Minister tell us what steps have been taken to ensure the security of
the nation over the Internet?'' ``I would like to inform the House
that we have a monitoring computer in each Internet access point in
the country.'' ``Oh! I'm so glad to hear that we are now
INVULNERABLE from the INTERNET THREAT OF HACKERS and MISGUIDED
NATIONAL ZEALOTS. Let's PUT A BAN ON a TIBETAN MAILING LIST and SHOW
THE WORLD HOW CLUED WE ARE!''.

PGP encrypted messages can be cracked. Given that it would require
something around 10,000,000,000,000 years, we can stop worrying about it
now. I am quoting from the PGP FAQ
http://pgp.dtype.org/pgpnet/pgp-faq/faq-03.html#3.1

"
Can't you break PGP by trying all of the possible keys?
This is one of the first questions that people ask when they are first
introduced to cryptography. They do not understand the size of the
problem. For the IDEA encryption scheme, a 128 bit key is required. Any
one of the 2^128 possible combinations would be legal as a key, and only
that one key would successfully decrypt all message blocks. Let's say
that you had developed a special purpose chip that could try a billion
keys per second. This is FAR beyond anything that could really be
developed today. Let's also say that you could afford to throw a billion
such chips at the problem at the same time. It would still require over
10,000,000,000,000 years to try all of the possible 128 bit keys. That
is something like a thousand times the age of the known universe! While
the speed of computers continues to increase and their cost decrease at
a very rapid pace, it will probably never get to the point that IDEA
could be broken by the brute force attack.

Don't recall the article making either of these claims.

mary just pointed us to the website of the pickpacket project, which
details most of its concepts, offers an online documentation, and more,
and mentions its authors.

couldn't check if the software is gpl'ed.

Apples and elephants.

SSL/TLS peers use X.509 certificates for authentication, and negotiate
a session key to use with a symmetric cipher for bulk encryption. The
128-bit refers to the length of this session key. With PGP, the 1024
bits refers to the length of the public key.

With some hand-waving, a 128-bit symmetric cipher is approximately the
same strength as (or maybe a little more than) a 1024-bit asymmetric
cipher.
