2004-04-04 Thread komal
Hi!

What is the reason behind premature and sudden damaged behind 1.44mb floppy
diskette? What precaution one need to take or it is simply not possible? Is
there any utility in Linux like magic format to format damaged floppy
diskette?

Thank you

hi ,
the redhat 9.0 disks 4,56 has only source rpms .So if want to install
any software frmo source you can simply do it using those disks.
But if you want to install the software which u think u missed out then
start the add/Remove applications from the menu and insert in your first
cd i.e,cd 1 of redhat. Then it will start the installation process and
ask you to insert the appropriate disks..

Microsoft's Fear Uncertainty and Doubt engine is giving a look at

usual though the facts are questionable, here is a detailed rebuttal of

This is a pretty good idea. I had worked a bit on
clusters, and i am volunteering for the event. But
before we go ahead with it a lot of planing has to be
 done.
The first thing we have to decide is location.
Location needs to have a good cooling system, power
line needs to industrial type (indian standard) as the
cluster will eat up lot of power (We might need the
 location for the whole weekend).
Secondly we have to decide the size and what we have
to do with the supercomputer. This involves some
maths, and i will need a volunteer to help me out in
all the calculations (basically cross check my
 calculations).
Third the type of network, this again will be
dependednt on the size of supercomputer and the
processes running on the big box.

Once we decide on these, we can go ahead with few
minor things. We have to decide on the date of event
and start workin for this a month in advance.

[ilugd] FlashMob Falls Short of Supercomputer Goal

2004-04-04 Thread Bhaskar Dutta

Hi all,
just wanted to share this information regarding the
flashmob I event which happened earlier today. I have
been following this event for quite a few weeks.

The event failed to gather 500 gigaflops to achieve
supercomputer status. managed around 180 only.
They managed to gather 669 comps out of which only 256
could be connected finally. nevertheless the event
itself proves that ad hoc supercomputing is very much
possible.
Check the following news erports (and search for
more):

we are not that ambitious. no need to break world records, etc. just
doing that event is making history in indian computing.

we'll probably manage anything between 50 to 100 computers which is good
enough. am sure as time goes by, people will finetune flashmobcomputng
until within six months to two years, they break world supercomputing
records. it is inevitable. let's just get started and run patience on a

The central Superhighway site called ``sunsite.unc.edu''
collapsed in the morning before the release. News about the release had
been leaked by a German hacker group, Harmonious Hardware Hackers, who
had cracked into the author's computer earlier in the week. They had
got the release date wrong by one day, and caused dozens of eager fans
to connect to the sunsite computer at the wrong time. ``No computer can
handle that kind of stress,'' explained the mourning sunsite manager,
Erik Troan. ``The spinning disks made the whole computer jump, and
finally it crashed through the floor to the basement.'' Luckily,
repairs were swift and the computer was working again the same evening.
``Thank God we were able to buy enough needles and thread and patch it
together without major problems.'' The site has also installed a new
throttle on the network pipe, allowing at most four clients at the same
time, thus making a new crash less likely. ``The book is now in our
Incoming folder'', says Troan, ``and you're all welcome to come and get it.''

LL,
Your piece got me into spending some valuable (?) company time browsing
up on the GNU-Darwin. What i read reminds me of our discussion after the
ilugd meet over chai.
1. Apple is very much into opensource - not just Darwin.
http://developer.apple.com/darwin/ps-faq.html

2. Apple sold about 734,000 desktops this quarter - which makes it the
highest *selling* Unix (as per one report).
Since we were talking desktops that day, how many desktops due you
estimate Linux runs on?

BTW, what happened to the discussion over the definition of a Linux user
?
