Re: [ilugd] Visual Basic & Access Alternate under Linux

2004-04-22 Thread Viksit Gaur
Hey!

Sirtaj Singh Kang is a developer of KDE, who's done
extensive work using a programming language called
Python. (www.python.org, www.kde.org, www.sirtaj.net)

As mentioned before, PyQT or PyGTK are good
alternatives too, as is Java. But, for developing an
application rapidly, the latter isnt a good option
unless you already know it. (Which is doubtful, since
you're doing stuff on VB as of now..).

www.gtk.org, www.trolltech.com have tons of links and
tutorials.

Sirtaj is Sirtaj Singh Kang. Who gave a very interesting talk on KDE,

Perhaps he's not on this list so he didn't answer.

Seriously people, something has to be done to avoid/restrict
interruptions to talks as these shift the focus away from the talk.
I prefer interruptions in the talk and shifting of the focus away from
the original topic. If I go out to a pub to drink beer and if I get
served complimentary peanuts and salad, hell no way I am going to complaint.

1.1 To ensure this, there has to be a moderator to control the crowd and to bring the discussion back.
It is up to the speaker to bring the talk back to the topic...

Personally, I do not agree with this proposal.

Currently we are using Squid and it does not allow FTP clients to

Could some one suggest Linux RH 7.3 based HTTP/FTP Proxy server which
would allow the FTP clients like gftp/cuteFTP to upload/download data
through it.

Thanks in advance.

so, lallaji, even butter idea (!)

why don't you request our friends at LFY to create a live graphicDesign
cd with LFY. this way, it reaches more people, does more, and will be a
great value-add for them.

reaching news-stands and streets across india is butter than a lot of
effort at linux delhi for just our mailing list guys who can download
specific source or binaries anyways?

also, pcqlinux2k4 ships with scribus, (though an old version) and with
vlc, cinerella, gimp, and i think even sodipodi else sodipodi is just a
1mb or so download. i assume fedora does too.

so exactly what would be the benefit of this cd?

i know knoppix ships with the graphics apps, too.

should it be illegal or declared henceforth illegal, would be

imho: the past ten years can be viewed as a battle of wits between
lawyers and geeks. who's smarter?

so far, at each round, the geeks seem to outwit lawyers. in the eyes of
many, ironically, the geeks are defending freedom and fair use; the
lawyers big ruthless companies with greed and your control written all
over them. meanwhile, whoever wins, the artists lose anyways. which is
why it seems important for the geeks to win, so artists can eventually
break out to new emerging opportunities and flexibility.

interesting.

Package: ident2
Vulnerability : buffer overflow
Problem-Type : remote
Debian-specific: no
CVE Ids: CAN-2004-0408

Jack <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> discovered a buffer overflow in
ident2, an implementation of the ident protocol (RFC1413), where a
buffer in the child_service function was slightly too small to hold
all of the data which could be written into it. This vulnerability
could be exploited by a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code with
the privileges of the ident2 daemon (by default, the "identd" user).

For the current stable distribution (woody) this problem has been
fixed in version 1.03-3woody1.

For the unstable distribution (sid), this problem will be fixed soon.

We recommend that you update your ident2 package.

Upgrade Instructions
-

wget url
will fetch the file for you
dpkg -i file.deb
will install the referenced file.

If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for
sources.list as given below:

apt-get update

apt-get upgrade
will install corrected packages

You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the

I think you should move off VB to either what Viksit suggested or Java.
There are even other alternatives like PyQT/PyGTK etc which may make
development faster/more interesting.

I believe Sirtaj has worked on PyQT and could give us a demo on that ,

How come you didn't mention the numerous interruptions b/w the talks/presenations. :)

Seriously people, something needs to be done to restrict the number of interruptions
during the talks/presenations. First of all, any questions/doubts/comments/examples
should be reserved till the talk/presenation is over. The reason for this is taht when
a question is asked, the focus of the talk/presenation shifts away from the
talk/presenation to the questions and subsequent questions. Thus, I have two
suggestions for the monthly meets.

1. Questions/doubts etc. should be reserved till the talk/presenation is over. I
understand this would not be easy to implement and so I suggest that,
1.1 We have a moderator to moderate the talk/presenation and keep the free from
interruptions/or to bring the discussion back to the talk/presenation.

2. All members should do a google search on the topics to be discussed in the meet
before coming to the meet. Just a simple google search as soon as the agenda of the
meet is declared. This would ensure that small doubts do not interrupt the flow of the
talk/presenation and make for a very interactive QnA session after each
talk/presenation.
