[ilugd] Dell stops shipping Windows on all its computers
Dell stops shipping Windows on all its computers http://www.newsforge.com/articles/04/07/07/1848210.shtml?tid=149 After being berated by Microsoft for attempting to sell Linux on some of the company's desktop systems, Dell has decided to stop selling Windows altogether. CEO Michael Dell said, in a fictional conference call with reporters, Microsoft is in no position to push us around. By selling Linux, we will save each customer nearly $200 per computer. If Microsoft would like to continue selling Windows through Dell, it will need to ask very nicely and accept that we have the right to sell other operating systems. Mr. Dell says Dell is going further and will be switching all its internal computers to Linux with a deadline of November 1st, 2004. We realise this is a very ambitious goal, but the internal license cost savings alone will allow me to buy a new Ferrari every month. Microsoft has reacted angrily to the news. Steve Ballmer is in the hospital recovering from choking on his breakfast after receiving the news, but a spokesperson says that Microsoft is not impressed with Dell's actions and will be taking anti-competitive action to ensure that the hardware company changes its mind. A vehicle with Washington state plates BILL was seen entering the Round Rock, Texas based head office of Dell corp. just before press time escorted by several large SUVs. It is not known at this time what is being negotiated. HP-Compaq, the world's #2 seller of desktop computers - behind Dell - is expected to follow Dell's lead on Monday and cease selling any Windows operating systems on their desktop computers. Gateway, however, says their computers will remain unequivocally Windows-only. The desktop manufacturer believes the extra expense of Windows is valuable to consumers. Gateway spokesman William Bradley said of Dell's move, I'm glad to hear Dell will be selling less expensive computers without the Microsoft tax -- we'll finally be able to upgrade the computers around the office. Italian distributor Questar, which managed to send Dell down its course toward the abandonment of Windows, says that Dell has made the right decision in moving away from Microsoft, and that it hopes Dell is not doing it to get a better deal from the Redmond, WA-based software giant. __ Do you Yahoo!? [ilugd] Linux Delhi July meet
Hello all With a heavy heart I regret to inform you all that the much hyped up Girls in Linux which was to be organized by LL has been canceled. Since we could not allow the geeks to sit idle on the 3rd Sunday of the month (18th July), it was decided after painful research (there was not much research, but it was painful) that we will have an Open Forum in this meet. In the Open Forum, anyone can ask a question and anyone can provide an answer. For example, you can ask questions on Playfair, Copyleft, CD distributions, Open Office, tricky software installs, networking and security. This is a good opportunity for the newbies to get suggestions from the members. It would be better if you can post your questions on the list beforehand and the discussion can continue in real life. If you would like to give a presentation in this meet, then do put in an email giving the topic of your talk. Also, we would need a venue for the meet. The venue should at the minimum provide seating capacity for about 30-35 and a Linux workstation with OpenOffice. [Please upgrade if you run Bugzilla -- Raju] This is an RFC 1153 digest. (1 message) -- Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: David Miller [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], Bugzilla mail list [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [BUGZILLA] Multiple vulnerabilities in Bugzilla 2.16.5 and 2.17.7 Date: Sat, 10 Jul 2004 19:23:04 -0400 -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Bugzilla Security Advisory July 10, 2004 Summary === Bugzilla is a Web-based bug-tracking system, used by a large number of software projects. This advisory covers security bugs that have recently been discovered and fixed in the Bugzilla code: In the stable 2.16 releases, one instance of arbitrary SQL injection exploitable only by a privileged user, several instances of insufficient data validation and/or escaping, and two instances of unprivileged access to names of restricted products. We know of no occasion where any of these vulnerabilities have been exploited. All Bugzilla installations are advised to upgrade to the latest stable version of Bugzilla, 2.16.6, which was released today. Development snapshots prior to version 2.18rc1 are also affected, so if you are using a development snapshot, you should obtain a newer one (2.18rc1) or use CVS to update. Vulnerability Details = Issue 1 - --- Class: Database Password Compromise Versions:2.17.1 through 2.17.7 (2.16-based releases are not affected) Description: If the SQL server is halted but the webserver is left running, ~ older versions of DBI display an error message to the remote ~ user which contains the database password. While a properly- ~ configured database would still only be accessible by a local ~ user using that password, all installations are advised to ~ change the password after upgrading. Reference: http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=227191 Issue 2 - --- Class: Privilege escalation Versions:2.17.1 through 2.17.7 (2.16-based releases are not affected) Description: A user with privileges to grant membership to one or more ~ individual groups (i.e. usually an administrator) can ~ trick the administrative controls into granting membership ~ in groups other than the ones he has privileges for. Reference: http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=233486 Issue 3 - --- Class: Information Leak Versions:All versions prior to 2.16.6 and 2.18rc1 Description: If Bugzilla is configured to hide entire products from some ~ users, both duplicates.cgi and the form for mass-editing a ~ list of bugs in buglist.cgi can disclose the names of those ~ hidden products to such users. References: http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=234825 ~ http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=234855 Issue 4 - --- Class: Cross-site scripting vulnerability Versions:All versions prior to 2.16.6 and 2.18rc1 Description: Several administration CGIs echo invalid data back to the ~ user without escaping it. Reference: http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=235265 Issue 5 - --- Class: User Password embedded in URL Versions:2.17.5 through 2.17.7 (2.16-based releases are not affected) Description: The user's password can be embedded as part of an image URL, ~ and thus visible in the web server logs, if the user is ~ prompted to log in while attempting to view a chart. Reference: http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=235510 Issue 6 - --- Class: Remote SQL injection vulnerability Versions:All versions prior to 2.16.6 and 2.18rc1 Description: A user with privileges to grant membership to any group ~ (i.e. usually an administrator) can trick editusers.cgi ~ into executing arbitrary SQL. Reference: http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=244272 Vulnerability Solutions === The fixes for all of the security bugs mentioned in this advisory are included in the 2.16.6 and 2.18rc1 releases. Upgrading to these releases will protect installations from possible exploits of these issues.
