[ilugd] Indiatimes listed in RBLs again ...

2004-09-04 Thread Sandip Bhattacharya

Following complaints from my hosting customers, I was investigating bounces
from indiatimes mail accounts. Seems that Indiatimes is (yet again) caught in
multiple RBL lists (SORBS and NJABL).

A quick google on indiatimes in anti-spam lists reveal that atleast till some
time back, they didnt even have an abuse@ mail address.

Rediffmail also seems to have similar unresponsiveness with regard to mail
issues. They have a habit of banning legitimate email addresses without any
publicised way of getting them removed from their databases.

I wonder how much of this stems from a monopolistic or
i-am-too-big-and-successful-for-this attitude of these companies.

My question is that what recourse do other hostmasters have with dealing with
such pests and incompetent mailing services? How do I get them to unblock my
legitimate customers who have no reason to send spam to anybody?

Re: [ilugd] installing fedora from hard disk

2004-09-04 Thread Mohd Nadeem
You can use its network feature in lan (not applicable for home users) using network
boot CD. this can lead to install not only one version but more and other versions of
linux flavour. Few simple steps to install from network
1. dump all CDs from any ISO extracter tool like WinISO
2. put all RPMS of each CD in one RPM directory ( where you kept the first CDs RPM)
3. make a bootable using rawrite utility (Customised bootable CD can also be burned
through Bart bootbale site http://nu2.nu and each network.img can be put all together
with customised option)

This can solve a big problem for further linux realease. and only one bootbale CD can
start installation over network. I have tested more than 12 linux release using
customised bart CD image size of 65Mb.

Thanks,
Nadeem

You could do it using NFS though. Or maybe VMWARE. Another obscure
option would be to dig Linux-From-Scratch style of installation, or
perhaps hacking Anaconda a bit to do it.

Or see if any of the distros around support that already?

Cheers,

[ilugd] New version of Jedit kicks a**

2004-09-04 Thread Sandip Bhattacharya
I never thought I would be using a Java based editor for my daily coding work.
Jedit changed all that - it is a polished mature editor supporting dozens of
languages (modes and even sub-modes like in emacs), and the best thing about
it is that it gives you the same responsiveness of native compiled apps!
There is absolutely no sluggishness that is normally associated with java
apps!

I am primarily coding web apps nowadays using (shudder) PHP. I have been using
jedit 4.1 for the past few weeks, and I am glad I shifted to it from
quanta(too buggy), anjuta(using project management features makes it generate
tonnes of auto generated files which you dont want), bluefish(good but syntax
highlighting sucks), eclipse+phpeclipse among others.

In jedit, project management is good, but the best part about it is the huge
array of user contributed plugins, which you can install/update right from
the configuration menu itself!

I particularly love the Log Viewer plugin which displays the output of tail -f
of any file you want (e.g. apache error_log) in a panel of the editor.

Jedit 4.2 is out, and the syntax highlighting (my biggest grouse against jedit
4.1) kicks ass, and is as good as gvim.

Jedit has a jython plugin and along with beanshell(a java based interpreted
shell language), lets you code in python to automate common tasks in the
editor, called macros.

Do check out jedit at http://www.jedit.org

[ilugd] supercite quoting (was Re: Senior Systems Engineer (3+ years))

Just in case anyone believes you, however, I'd just like to say that I
think supercite's Name quoting is hideous. It wastes space on each
line; interacts poorly with nested quotes, being cited in the standard
way, and with format=flowed; and as far as I can see, has no advantage
whatsoever over the conventional way to quote text in email.

In short, I think supercite sucks. The thought of everybody using it
is depressing in the extreme.

Rediff actually does have a fairly good attitude.
One thing they do however is that they'll 550 any incoming email at the
gate if the sender is on the block sender list of any of their users,
besides their usual filters [they use spamhaus.org and other fairly good
blocklists]

Indiatimes is unresponsive, and not too good as far as spam issues go.
And they are infested with nigerian spammers (among other spammers) as
well ...

My question is that what recourse do other hostmasters have with dealing with

Is indiatimes blocking you or are you blocking indiatimes?
