[ilugd] Accessing a Wincedows 98 Machine

2005-10-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi

This is actually a follow up to an earlier mail regarding the HP 1005
that does not work (as yet) on ubuntu (linux).

AS it works with Wincddows 98 , we were wondering , if there was a way
of accessing it over the lan net.

But, the problem: The network server is an Ubuntu box. And we have not
been able to access the Wincedows 98 machine,

the server is setup as DHCP ??

So what do we need to do to be able to access this wincedows machine.

Funnily , while it is on the same network, through which our internet is
also routed it can ping the various network ips and also access the
internet, but no where does it show up on the Ubuntu network.

will be grateful for any advice

regards
ram

Synopsis

Texinfo is vulnerable to symlink attacks, potentially allowing a local
user to overwrite arbitrary files.

Background
==

Texinfo is the official documentation system created by the GNU
project.

Affected packages
=

---
 Package / Vulnerable / Unaffected
---
  1  sys-apps/texinfo  < 4.8-r1  >= 4.8-r1

Description
===

Frank Lichtenheld has discovered that the "sort_offline()" function in
texindex insecurely creates temporary files with predictable filenames.

Impact
==

A local attacker could create symbolic links in the temporary files
directory, pointing to a valid file somewhere on the filesystem. When
texindex is executed, this would result in the file being overwritten
with the rights of the user running the application.

Workaround
==

There is no known workaround at this time.

Resolution
==

All Texinfo users should upgrade to the latest version:

# emerge --sync
# emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=sys-apps/texinfo-4.8-r1"

References

Availability

This GLSA and any updates to it are available for viewing at

Security is a primary focus of Gentoo Linux and ensuring the
confidentiality and security of our users machines is of utmost
importance to us. Any security concerns should be addressed to

Package: mod-auth-shadow
Vulnerability : programming error
Problem type : remote
Debian-specific: no
CVE ID : CAN-2005-2963
Debian Bug : 323789

A vulnerability in mod_auth_shadow, an Apache module that lets users
perform HTTP authentication against /etc/shadow, has been discovered.
The module runs for all locations that use the 'require group'
directive which would bypass access restrictions controlled by another
authorisation mechanism, such as AuthGroupFile file, if the username
is listed in the password file and in the gshadow file in the proper
group and the supplied password matches against the one in the shadow
file.

This update requires an explicit "AuthShadow on" statement if website
authentication should be checked against /etc/shadow.

For the old stable distribution (woody) this problem has been fixed in
version 1.3-3.1woody.2.

For the stable distribution (sarge) this problem has been fixed in
version 1.4-1sarge1.

For the unstable distribution (sid) this problem has been fixed in
version 1.4-2.

We recommend that you upgrade your libapache-mod-auth-shadow package.

Package: arc
Vulnerability : insecure temporary file
Problem type : local
Debian-specific: no
CVE ID : CAN-2005-2945 CAN-2005-2992

Two vulnerabilities have been discovered in the ARC archive program
under Unix. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project
identifies the following problems:

CAN-2005-2945

Eric Romang discovered that the ARC archive program under Unix
creates a temporary file with insecure permissions which may lead
to an attacker stealing sensitive information.

CAN-2005-2992

Joey Schulze discovered that the temporary file was created in an
insecure fashion as well, leaving it open to a classic symlink
attack.

The old stable distribution (woody) does not contain arc packages.

For the stable distribution (sarge) these problems have been fixed in
version 5.21l-1sarge1.

For the unstable distribution (sid) these problems have been fixed in
version 5.21m-1.

We recommend that you upgrade your arc package.

2005-10-06 Thread Shiv
hi,
this is a good place to start.
http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-mini/Debian-and-Windows-Shared-Printing.html#linuxprintingcomponents
I know it talks about shared windows printers but the
concept is same. You need to use cups along with the
proper .ppd file for your printer model.

[ilugd] [ Commercial ] Wanted GIMP experts for training PhotoShop users

2005-10-06 Thread Rajesh Kumar Mallah
Hi,

We are planning a transition from PhotoShop(PS) to Gimp
for a process in our company.

We are however facing difficulties in using certain tools.
Example Problem: Users opine that the Pen Tool of PS is
superior to the one in GIMP and its taking more time to do
the task(selection) in Gimp.

I would like to know are there seasoned users of Gimp on
the list or does anyone know of someone who is an expert
and willing to train ?

We are considering to hire someone on contract who can
provide Gimp training and can assist in this migration.

Hi Kenneth,

The process is editing of product pictures caputred via
digital camera or scanned photographs from customers'
product brochures. The background of photographs needs
to be removed , some times color needs to be enhanced.
For background removal, selection of product is required ,
products vary in shapes and nature subsequently the process
of selection too. (Think of Autoparts and Bead Ornaments)

We are interseted in Gimp becuase we want to reduce
dependency of our process in Windows (and its updates)
and Anti Viruses (and their updates). We are using Gimp 2.2.8

he already is using the latest version of gimp. gimp team is constantly
enhancing the software but implementing major features takes some time to
get into production. right now gimp 2.3.4 is under development which
eventually will be gimp 2.4. binaries of the development versions are not
available till the preview release (e.g. gimp 2.4 RC1)

Komal / Vivek ,

I am using latest stable. I could not find anything on ChangeLogs
that say about improvement of selection tools (beizer/pen)
in upcoming 2.4version. I will definitely try to install and and see
if there are any changes in that area.

The main problem is i do not know where the bottleneck is.

To me pentool of PhotoShop is *as difficult* as pen tool
of GIMP , because i do not know how to use it. (i am not designer)

But i observed that the designer was slow in Gimp when it came
to do the same work on the same image. But designer could not
really explain what made him slow , he just said it was difficult in
Gimp to use the pen tool. (The designer is not techie or have
maths bckg). I am not sure is GIMP lacks anything or the designer
is yet to discover that magical keystroke.

I would try to post my problem in Gimp forum also , but having
an expert in delhi who could personally train would have been
most desirable.

[ilugd] Timing problem with vixie-cron 3.0.1 on RHEL3

2005-10-06 Thread Rajesh Kumar Mallah

Hi Folks,

Very often our crond goes berserk .

Eg below is the normal state wherein the times in line
towards the end of cron log are more or less matching the
system time.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# date
Thu Oct 6 19:19:21 IST 2005
[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# tail -f /var/log/cron
Oct 6 19:14:00 IPDDFG0595ATL2 CROND[20301]: (root) CMD
(/usr/sbin/ntpdate ntp.myfloridacity.us > /dev/null)
Oct 6 19:15:00 IPDDFG0595ATL2 CROND[20681]: (root) CMD (/usr/bin/mrtg
/etc/mrtg/mrtg.cfg)
Oct 6 19:15:00 IPDDFG0595ATL2 CROND[20677]: (root) CMD (export
LANG=en_US && mrtg /usr/local/interface/mrtg/mrtg.cfg &> /dev/null)
Oct 6 19:19:01 IPDDFG0595ATL2 CROND[22101]: (root) CMD
(/usr/sbin/ntpdate ntp.myfloridacity.us > /dev/null)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]#

However quite frequently once in 2-3 days the crond goes berserk and its
time
is not same as system time , eg during day time it executes jobs of 1 am
and
displays 1 am in the log lines too. On restarting the crond
(/etc/init.d/crond restart)
the problem gets resolved temporarily.

Could anyone please suggest what could be a permanent solution
to it? . Did anyone else face similar problem ? my platform is RHEL3 +
vixie-cron-3.0.1-76_EL3 + crontabs-1.10-5

BTW, is it possible to write such a crontab entry that will have the
current time/date
in the command line. the idea is since the system time is being synced
by ntpd it is
mostly ok, if i could run a crontab that has time/date info in the
command itself
then may be it will be possible to detect at what time or what program
caused the
cron to go berserk . As the full command name come in the log

Eg:
Oct 6 19:15:00 IPDDFG0595ATL2 CROND[20681]: (root) CMD (/usr/bin/mrtg
/etc/mrtg/mrtg.cfg)

Any reply would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regds
Rajesh Kumar Mallah.

Hi,

We have an old HP Ljet2100 that speaks PCL5 and it works
perfectly with Foomatic/ljet4 driver installed in linux machine
that has cupsd running in it.

The exact setup is that the printer is connected to a Win98 machine
that has been shared , and we have added it as a network printer (SMB) in
the cups server. Not sure though if it works perfect because of
the proper cups driver selection or becuase of native windrivers. But
changing the cups driver do have an effect in the working of the printer.

You may try the ljet4 driver as i vaugely remember that it used to
work in linux.

Is there any way I can see the actual route my packet takes when
it goes from my home site to remote site when both of them are

a normal packet and then same is unwrapped at the remote end , so
even if I do trace route I won't be able to see the actuall route over
the internet that the packet took . Is there anyway I can see the
same with VPN connected ?

None of these technologies are free - and it is very hard to make either

that you are willing to take the advice a bunch or random, unknown

Since you are using multiple machines Nagios is your
friend. It comes with scripts to monitor the acivities
and give you real time statistics. You can also write
scripts for nagios to sit your needs.

I agree to closed,non-community nature of these technologies (Don't
flame me on JCP , it is more of a sham ) but I don't agree to the fact
J2EE(its specific implementation in Java) is difficult to run on linux
.It's fairly mature and stable when running on linux as had been my
exp so far and I have never tried mono on linux so no comments abt
.NET . As for learning well you should learn as many programming
languages(including closed source) as possible because there are
always horses for courses and don't worry to much abt the stacks
.NET,J2EE they more of API's :)

a user coming from photoshop background will face a good productivity loss
when working on gimp. in photoshop there's a common background which has
the images and toolbox etc. inside it. however in gimp they're separate
and every image is a new window including the toolbox and the layers
dialog box. that is a major cause of dissatisfaction amongst photoshop
users, because even to apply a single filter, the image needs to be
manually selected but in photoshop its selected by default. also, the menu
options are quite different as well, it'll take some time to adapt to the
new environment.

what i recommend, till someone can be found for training, is

a) don't expect gimp to work exactly like photoshop. some things are
better done in gimp than in photoshop and vice versa
b) try to use the right click menus clicking inside the image. that's a
major perfomance booster which the photoshop users generally ignore
c) have a look at the gimp tutorials. they can help yu understand it better
http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Bezier_Selections/
http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/
d) use script-fu also apart from filters, along with tear-off menus and
learn about keyboard shortcuts

gimp is a very efficient tool specially on linux and can get your work
done pretty fast. but, as of version 2.2.x, some things require a few
extra steps such as resizing an image inside a layer which may be
irritating to the photoshop user. but, as said, it is a competent tool and
gets your job done.

Ravish, 5 to 9 years of experience of QT programming? Are you sure you
are stating experience requirement logically given that QT is around
for 6 to 9 years and it became popular in last couple of years.

Komal
