In general, it is not a good idea to mix and match packages, even if
they are from distributions that are apparently related, e.g., RHEL and
Fedora. That is because the two distributions will undoubtedly have a
different set of packages, at different version numbers, and are each
tested with that particular configuration. Mixing them up is inviting
trouble, and I would only do that in a critical situation.

2007-03-28 Thread Gora Mohanty
Hi,
Here is an abstract from Soumya Sir about the talk on data mining
to be presented at the forthcoming ILUG-Delhi meet this Sun., 1st
April. It looks interesting, especially as it has applications in
other areas than just bio-informatics.

Data mining with Open Source tools: Application to Biological Sequence
Classification.

Computational prediction of protein function or annotation as a whole is
a challenging problem. The assignment of protein function is performed
by comparing a sequence with unknown function to sequences of known
function. There are number of methods applied in present days annotation
techniques like sequence similarity search (viz FASTA, BLAST), profile
based search (PSI-BLAST, HMMER) etc. The profile based techniques using
hidden markov model proved to be superior to sequence similarity based
methods in detecting remote homologs. Other methods used for general
discrimination are NaiveBayes, Support Vector Machine, Artificial Neural
Network, Decision tree. Recent applications extend the use of the
support vector machines to protein homology detection. This technique
performed significantly better in image recognition and speech
recognition.

In this demo we demonstrate the application of data mining with the open
source machine learning software WEKA to sequence classification.

Soumyadeep

It works for me on Bon Echo 2.0.0.2 and the version of Flash is the same

File name: libflashplayer.so
Shockwave Flash 9.0 r31

I also have opera running and it surely doesn't run on opera, has the

I can some things, but the dropdown menus, which apparently are flash
based do not work on this machine. (they drop down, but clicking on
most of the items does not produce any result).

I have following from ``about:plugins''.

File name: libflashplayer.so
Shockwave Flash 9.0 r31

This is an i386 machine running debian unstable, and I do not get the
dropdowns on my other AMD64 machine. (that is without a net connection
for some time now.)

The result was, I could not find info about nokia phones from my
cosy, comfy armchair, and ...

Because I could not find information about nokia phones on net, I did
not buy _two_. (err... I got two phones in last three months - one for
self, and another for biwi).

Its hard to find someone who has "bought" Redhat ES or AS call them up for

But its also hard to find people who would readily go for a CentOS install

"Something Similar". Unlike in windows, you really dont have to uninstall
anything, If you dont want these servers/services to start up, just go to
/etc/init.d and use chkconfig to change the options for these services (before
you ask, man chkconfig is the answer!).
IMHO, one of the cool features of linux is that multiple versions of
servers/software can cohabit ("live in sin"?) and you could even run both or
all of them concurrently (as long as you change the ports they listen on).
you now install apache with mod_perl and run that init script.

You should keep your commercially supported distribution to track what
is being made available via the support channels (RHN for example for
Red Hat) so that you can benefit from official support.

In general, you should not mix different packages just because something
is newly available. You should be rest assured that *any* security issue
will be addressed for the officially shipped packages. Hence, unless you
are looking at some specific feature/function that is missing in the shipped
package AND are prepared to support it yourself, then go ahead.

If I am running these systems in an enterprise, I would stay off straying
from the supported environment unless I have a really good reason.

HTH.

[ilugd] Free Vs enterprise OSS releases

2007-03-28 Thread Yashpal Nagar
Hi there,

As we know Redhat and SUSE few major vendors for enterprise class Linux
distribution do also have their free/community driven distributions like
Fedors & Opensuse. Now lately we have noticed that few softwares
releases become rapidly available from Fedora, Opensuse rather than
principle vendor SUSE or Redhat itself in their enterprise class OS.

e.g apache 2.2.4 rpms are available from Opensuse but not yet available
from Novell for their enterprise class of OS.
http://software.opensuse.org/download/Apache/SUSE_Linux_10.0/x86_64/

What i want to know here is, as a practice should one go ahead and
install (on top of RHEL/SUSE) such updates/packages from Fedora or
Opensuse, whenever they become available? if yes what could happen to
the server when you apply service packs which lately become available
from Redhat or Novell, service pack installation would't comlain & run
with no trouble? if no - then what are the reasons?

Regards
Yashpal

[ilugd] /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny do not work

2007-03-28 Thread abhishek jain
Hi friends,
I have in one of mine companys servers installed RHEL 4.x AS and firewall is
disabled, i have a few questions:
1. How to enable firewall which allow access to ssh, http, ftp
2. /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny do not work i mean i write in
hosts.allow 1 IP
telnet:
and then in hosts.deny
telnet: ALL

but even then after saving the files i can access telnet from any machine.
Any pointers will be helpful.
Thanks,
Abhishek jain

[ilugd] problem in fetchmail + postfix with multidrop

2007-03-28 Thread rajnish kumar
Dear experts
I have installed postfix it's working fine, My pop is
some where else when i am configured fetchmail in fetchmailrc with *
option it's working fine but it gives error in multidrop ( catchall).

configuration without multidrop works fine
# defaults
# no dns
# envelope Delivered-To:
# set postmaster "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
# poll 202.138.97.121
# localdomains mydomain.com
# proto pop3
# user "raj"
# pass ""
# to *
 #fetchall
# keep # For testing, comment out and use fetchall for live

configuration for multidrop gives error
# defaults
# no dns
# envelope Delivered-To:
# set postmaster "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
# poll 202.138.97.121
# localdomains mydomain.com
# proto pop3
# user "raj"
# pass ""
# to "raj"
 #fetchall
# keep # For testing, comment out and use fetchall for live

but when i configured fetchmail with multidrop ( catchall) option it's
gives error like this in postfix.log

  to=<[EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>>, relay=none,
delay=1, status=bounced (Host or domain name not found. Name service error
for name=localhost.domain.com type=A: Host
not found)

plz advice

[ilugd] Next ILUG-Delhi meeting at 2pm, Sun., April 1st, JNU BIC

2007-03-28 Thread gora
Hello,
Here is the long-awaited announcement for the next ILUG-Delhi
meeting. It will be held at 2pm, Sun., April 1st, at the JNU
Bio-Informatics Centre.

The agenda for the meeting is:
o Progress on e-zine: Atul Jha
  o Technical talk: Soumyadeep Nandi
Data mining with Open Source tools: Application to Biological
Sequence Classification.
o Planning for Freedel 2007. See the post from Raj for some details
on what people have in mind.
Given that it is already Wed., and that I will be travelling till
tomorrow, I am not sure that it will be possible to arrange for
car-pooling. What we can probably do is to arrange a vehicle for
transport to/from Connaught Place to the venue. Please email me
*off-list* if you are interested in this, so that I can gauge the
amount of interest.

Regards,
Gora
