Norat,

Please start with a new email instead of selecting any email and
replying to it with your question. I suppose you do this because you
get list ejail address in the from: address already populated. It may
be a little convenience to you but is inconvenience to lots of people.
This is called thread hijacking. Please avoid this behaviour unless
you want to be ignored.

 Read http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/msg18182.html

The same thing happened with me a couple of weeks ago. While applying some

updates won't apply any more. Though none of my applications are misbehaving

further updates may make ubuntu brittle. am caught with one foot

@OP: For production I would stick to 6.06 but if you are having to
upgrade on account of newer program / release 7.10 is stable and has
more glitz.

i just recieved the Ubuntu Gutsy CDs (today)... was really excited to
install and have a feel of the new release..
but i think there is some problem:
1. i am able to boot the CD, the graphical install menu comes..
2. when i select install(normal/safe), check cd for defects.. all that
happens is, a single line on the otherwise blank screen which says
x.xxpci: unable to allocate memory...
x.xx
where x.xx is some weired sequence of digits...

i have received 2 new CDs..
i have also re-checked by putting in my older Fiesty CDs (both pc and 64-bit
edition).. which still work flawlessly...
*** so this confirms that nothings wrong with my DVD - RW..

what could be the problem...??
any ideas or similar experience..??

ditto for the fresh install of dapper.

feisty is another story. i installed a lot of other apps, and have
 been regularly applying all updates.
in the past few weeks, perhaps since the launch of gutsy, feisty has
 had several updates to apps.

as i kept applying i soon noticed that some apps started misbehaving,
especially the multimedia ones that rely on a lot of other components
 and libraries.
kino that handles video-editing just stopped working normally, and
after almost a whole day of fiddling around with it, i just booted
into ubuntustudio, where kino worked flawlessly.
eventually, the update manager started cautioning me on applying
updates, and would recommend i use a 'partial upgrade' instead.
risky stuff. i clicked it once, it responded with some failure to do
so, and i went back to applying updates as usual.

the past few days have just stopped applying updates as am unsure if
further updates may make ubuntu brittle. am caught with one foot
freeze-framed in mid-air, confused whether to stand still, update, or
just let go of feisty and install the next ubuntu at 7.10.

i know this is a tough question to resolve, and is based on pure
subjective perception. but, what's your take?

I recently installed 7.04 from a CD on a friend of mine's Acer Laptop. After
a while of poking we managed to get compiz working after installing the
nvidia drivers. Since Gutsy came with a lot more compiz support, I suggested
he upgrade to it. But after the upgrade the newer kernel refused to boot,
and while booting with the older kernel went smoothly, it wouldnt login to
the system normally, i.e. all i could log into was failsafe terminal, no
gnome. Logging into gnome brought up the black screen with bootup messages
and then back to login screen.

Turned out the compiz-core and compiz-plugins packages were the problem,
removed them, and then everything worked. But still, this is too much of
unstability. I dont think gutsy per se is the problem, its probably the
upgrade process.

upgrade to something like Mandriva, Suse or even Debian and your
 problems will go away.

thanks kenneth for your response.
i have the mandriva 2008 cd from LFY on my desk.
printed on it is the following WARNING (their caps)
The text-mode installer has an unconfirmed bug that may erase your
partition table.
We highly recommend that you DO NOT go ahead with an installation if your PC
does not support the graphical installer/

my pc does not support the graphical installer. so will skip this.
however, if and when i do get personal hardware that does, will kick
some tyres on Mandriva.

OpenSuse is a great distro, but i personally do not quite like the
company's recent policies.
however a lot of users i know are satisfied and even delighted by OpenSuse.
so in keeping with my 'follow your bliss' approach, will try debian or
even fedora.
in fact i always have trusty old debian on a separate partition all the time.
don't wanna let go of ubuntu though.
have been using ubuntu as my workhorse for my production pcs for
nearly two years now.

Exactly how did it stop working normally? Not able to grab videos or some
 interface problems?

the recent slew of updates also had updates to a lot of graphic and
video libraries.
kino could grab video, but the video-edits would just not happen anymore.
the software would do nothing. a lot of other random stuff started
happening with a lot of other multimedia utilities.

firefox also started misbehaving a bit. just stalling once in a while.

I haven't updated since then. I've received Gutsy CDs, and waiting to
get it installed (after semester exams).

sahil has an interesting experience to share with gutsy.

as you are a regular columnist with LFY, why dont you use your
influence with them to see that they dont publish defective DVDs? I
dont trust LFY dvds - I have downloaded my own copy.

[ilugd] Fedora Mirror Selection

2007-11-23 Thread Anil Seth
Hi,

Fedora 8 shortlists mirrors from China/Japan/Russia with my ip.
I manually changed the mirrors to the ones in US/Australia for better
performance but
yum seems to update that list.

Any idea how I can ensure a more appropriate selection of mirrors in
the absence of any in India?

Thanks regards
Anil
