I recently installed 7.04 from a CD on a friend of mine's Acer Laptop. After a while of poking we managed to get compiz working after installing the nvidia drivers. Since Gutsy came with a lot more compiz support, I suggested he upgrade to it. But after the upgrade the newer kernel refused to boot, and while booting with the older kernel went smoothly, it wouldnt login to the system normally, i.e. all i could log into was failsafe terminal, no gnome. Logging into gnome brought up the black screen with bootup messages and then back to login screen. Turned out the compiz-core and compiz-plugins packages were the problem, removed them, and then everything worked. But still, this is too much of unstability. I dont think gutsy per se is the problem, its probably the upgrade process. :-) niyam ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Next Event: http://freed.in - February 22/23, 2008 Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/ -- Puneet http://sahyog.blogspot.com/ ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Next Event: http://freed.in - February 22/23, 2008 Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

We highly recommend that you DO NOT go ahead with an installation if your PC does not support the graphical installer/ my pc does not support the graphical installer. so will skip this. however, if and when i do get personal hardware that does, will kick some tyres on Mandriva. OpenSuse is a great distro, but i personally do not quite like the company's recent policies. however a lot of users i know are satisfied and even delighted by OpenSuse. so in keeping with my 'follow your bliss' approach, will try debian or even fedora. in fact i always have trusty old debian on a separate partition all the time. don't wanna let go of ubuntu though. have been using ubuntu as my workhorse for my production pcs for nearly two years now. :-) niyam ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Next Event: http://freed.in - February 22/23, 2008 Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

Exactly how did it stop working normally? Not able to grab videos or some interface problems? the recent slew of updates also had updates to a lot of graphic and video libraries. kino could grab video, but the video-edits would just not happen anymore. the software would do nothing. a lot of other random stuff started happening with a lot of other multimedia utilities. firefox also started misbehaving a bit. just stalling once in a while. I haven't updated since then. I've received Gutsy CDs, and waiting to get it installed (after semester exams). sahil has an interesting experience to share with gutsy. :-) n ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Next Event: http://freed.in - February 22/23, 2008 Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

[ilugd] Fedora Mirror Selection
Hi, Fedora 8 shortlists mirrors from China/Japan/Russia with my ip. I manually changed the mirrors to the ones in US/Australia for better performance but yum seems to update that list. Any idea how I can ensure a more appropriate selection of mirrors in the absence of any in India?
