This focus on "what the community wants", in my opinion, does not always work. There are things which need to be driven by a single person or a small core team based on their personal convictions. Everything can't be a decision by committee. All those who're harping about the inappropriateness about the new direction of Freed on the mailing list (me included) will probably not work as much (or not work at all) in running around to get stuff organized. So why let them take control of the decision? (which would mean giving them a vote in the meeting -- if it comes to that) The core team can listen to everyone's view, and execute only what they themselves are convinced about. Not some fuzzy "community" trying to drive stuff by proxy using video conferencing and IRC. Set the bootable flag . b- used the dd utility to copy the root partition from the first hard disk to the new one, for example dd if=/dev/hdc1 of=/dev/hdd2 . It was very time consuming, took more than 2 hours. 2) Second Time, Two hard disks with same specs, a- partitioned the new hard disk exactly the same as the old one.Andformatted the partitions in same type.Set the bootable flag b- Then because of the time consumed doing the dd , looked around and found partimage . It backs up the partition with the data and can restore the partition( bigger than the backed up partition). c- After using the partimage, to copy and restore. Had to use the dd , dd if=/dev/hdc of=/dev/hdd to copy the MBR. more info: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=287522 -- Regards, Tirveni Tirveni Yadav Freed.in Freedom in Technology & Software February 2008 , Jawaharlal Nehru University ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Next Event: http://freed.in - February 22/23, 2008 Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

If so, it is in very poor taste, or else it is due to ignorance of the power of IRC. There was recently a sprint by the django community. About a 100 people all around the world participated. The main group was in Chicago, with other smaller groups in other cities and many individuals sitting in their homes. It was all done over IRC. IRC can be used in two ways: 1. Projected on a screen where all the participants can see the progress. Incidentally the minutes can also be entered in real time on a wiki and projected on the screen. We have successfully demonstrated this at our meeting in Chennai (Gora had attended) 2. If wifi is available, members with laptops can also use IRC. Of course, if your reply was intended to suppress discussion in the heavy handed way one has come to expect from some ilugd members, please ignore this mail. -- regards Kenneth Gonsalves Associate, NRC-FOSS [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://nrcfosshelpline.in/web/ Foss conference for the common man: http://registration.fossconf.in/web/ ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Next Event: http://freed.in - February 22/23, 2008 Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

[ilugd] ubuntu feisty roll-forward till oct 2007
dear all, in april 2007, i installed a fresh ubuntu feisty on my five-year-old desktop that is now growing long in the bluetooth. i regularly updated and applied patches on it, so i had a 'more usable' system that worked brilliantly, till the last week of oct 2007. the subsequent updates and patches hurled my system into turbulent weather, the fasten-seat-belts sign lit up, and soon the system just became completely unusable. noticed that gutsy's specs for hardware are more than what i have currently. am therefore sitting at this moment with my cd of ubuntu feisty, ready to do a fresh-install. alas! that mercilessly rolls me back to an april 2007 ecosystem. is there any way for me to configure or tweak my system updates, apt sources, etc., so the system and apps that i wish to install and update roll-forward and stop at october 2007 and don't go beyond that? once done, is there any way in which i can create some sort of a snapshot system, so if the system rattles again due to an update or a patch, i safely roll-back to a known, working snapshot? your help and suggestions much appreciated. regards niyam -- niyam bhushan ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Next Event: http://freed.in - February 22/23, 2008 Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

IRC is inelegant for a participatory meet. andrew mentioned a superb solution once for group video conferencing. we could try that. ideally, a webcam that captures the overall ambience, and a mic, passed around so that audio may make it to the webcast, could get it started. the rest as per doktor professeur andrew. let's actively pursue a solution for remote-participation that is more evolved than IRC. regards niyam -- niyam bhushan ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Next Event: http://freed.in - February 22/23, 2008 Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/
