As has been requested many times before in similar cases,
please do not post such generic invitations to mailing
lists. To my mind, this constitutes abuse, and should be
grounds for the poster being put on temporary moderation.

Wow! This seems cool. Lemme download and use. I do believe now that I wont

Based on this thread's discussion I asked the RH India spokesperson some
questions. Following are the details:
---
Q: Although we’re aware of free (as in beer) RHEL alternatives like CentOS,
what if I opt to use RHEL without buying a subscription? Is that 'legally'
possible?

A: RHEL is open source software governed by GPL licensing. As per the GPL
terms it is freely available on the Internet for download and use. Since
this would be free download without subscription, it would not cover any
support, updates or any of the benefits that a subscription would
entitle. Once the subscription period ends, unless it is renewed again,
the service support ceases. However, the customer can still continue
using the product.

One thing I’d like to bring fourth for subscribers is that Red Hat
extends the Red Hat Open Source Assurance program, which safeguards
customers who are developing and deploying open source solutions from
legal harm.

You can get more information about the purchase and usage of the RHEL
subscription for India in Section 3.1 and Section 5 of the Enterprise
Agreement [www.redhat.com/licenses/Enterprise_Agr_India.pdf].

Q. Let’s assume I’ve been an RHEL subscriber. I then choose to
discontinue it, well aware that I won’t get security updates (having
already made up my mind to get the security updates from CentOS
repositories). So, as per you, I can still keep RHEL on the system?

A: Yes, this is one of the important benefits to the customer where he can
continue using RHEL but, at the same time, he would lose the advantage
of Red Hat support ecosystem.

Q. I understand that RH artwork and logos are trademarked by Red Hat
Inc. Does that stop me from freely sharing a copy with my friends like I
do in the case of Fedora?

A: The Red Hat artwork and logo are trademarked and cannot be used freely.
Yes, the code can be shared, but it cannot be duplicated with the Red
Hat logo.

Q. Can you elaborate on the trademark policies in laymen’s terms? Essentially,
what are the dos and don’ts?

A: The trademark and logo are completely owned by Red Hat and any use would
be illegal.

I am not new to Foss tools. I have tried almost all of them. That's why I am
asking which one is stable enough to do serious editing. Kino is not at all
good for someone who has worked on FCP. It's like asking a Ferrari driver to
try bicycle... Blender...hmmm good for 3D guys...but not for pure film
editing too much there.
.is there anything that is really good enough for serious work?

I used both and its just the software suite. Both use same kernel yes with
one difference -- Real Time kernel. All you need to do on Ubuntu is to
install real time kernel with :

 sudo apt-get install linux-rt

Or if you are updating you Ubuntu with entire suite of Ubuntu Studio
from Synaptic,
(just select Ubuntu Studio in synaptic) it will automatically Install
the realtime kernel.

install Ubuntu Studio, just select the package in Synaptic and entire suite
of multimedia applications will be installed. Though I would suggest if
someone is already aware of software to be used install those only. Other
wise its a clutter of un-necessary software. For example Kino never worked
for me due to lack of Timeline.

Suggest you install Ubuntu studio on a separate partition OR remove
CentOS if you are not using it much.
Even though both are Linux distros, their package management is
different, the library paths may be different.

Thanks for your kind replies Linux-Lingam and Gajendra.
I really appreciate it-- and the information was really helpful.

Maybe my question sounded dumb to some-- but I guess if people asking
questions judged as dumb are snubbed with sarcasm--- then knowledge will
never spread or be openly shared beyond master-slave kind of transactions--
that's why I never hesitate to ask or share!!!

Also, my thanks to the unicast poster who offered to share his Ubuntu Linux
distro... thanks a ton... will revert unicast...

Thanks and Best Regards,

Hi Nalin
To my knowledge both are not binary compatible and infact use
different type of packages. (centos has rpm and ubuntu deb packages).
You'll have to make a separate partition and have to make a dual boot
with your centos according to me.

Re: [ilugd] question abt UbuntuStudio compatibility with CentOS distro...

2008-09-18 Thread Linux Lingam
oh nalin,

your question is a tad funny. you see, ubuntustudio is a complete and
independent linux distro. when you wish to run it in centos, your
question either implies a) you mistake it for a package, or b) you
wish to run it in a virtual environment.

in case a) no it's a distro
b) don't virtualize, you need the lowest latency possible, and also
sound drivers, JACK, et al may cause problems.

please consider instalilng ubuntustudio in a separate partition, say
about 5 to 10 gb would be sufficient. keep a separate partition for
your data files.

hth

niyam bhushan

Re: [ilugd] question abt UbuntuStudio compatibility with CentOS distro...

2008-09-18 Thread Nalin Savara
To rephrase my question:

(a) Are there any specific package dependancies which I will need to install
on my CentOS install before I install ubuntu-studio ?

(b) (based on experience), would it be recommended to skip trying to get
ubuntu-studio to run with CentOS--- and instead run it with a separate
install of Ubuntu ?

- Personally I depend on my centos to do mock-up installs of certain web
applications to duplicate errors and debug locally--- and hence dont want to
do anything drastic that disturbs that setup.

hey bro Ashish,
Kindly spare me the sarcasm-- unless you want to unnecessarily start a flame
war--- I asked for practical information-- and if you lack the information
or knowledge to answer that question; then limit yourself to philosophical
debates instead.
Also, my politeness is neither a sign of weakness NOR am I seeking any
patronage from you-- in english it's called "list courtesy".

# chroot /mnt/centos

Execute above commands from a live cd, with CentOS partition mounted at
/mnt/centos.
