Ravikant happened to be attending the event, and I believe it's his choice what OS he wants to use. It is his choice to use the OS he wants. Whats more important is that he was using Firefox on Winblows which is very much a FOSS product. (for running the launched site). Free software is available across platforms and its use should be promoted on all of them. ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

Free software is available across platforms and its use should be promoted on all of them. An additional benefit is also that of a new user seeing Windows at such an event and then seeing free and open software running on it. A new person who has been using Windows for long would be comfortable and now open to the ideas being presented about freedom in software. We are not asking him to make a complete break but try out such FOSS software running on windows and see its strengths. You must remember that most people have no idea about the philosophies behind not using windows. So when we genuinely explain that windows is restrictive and there are better options available they begin to understand. They would try out some free software on windows, be happy with it and then start enquiring about linux itself. Using Windows IMHO is not hypocrisy. It also clears the notion that we are MS or Windows bashers. As for my first comment, I apologise if I was too abrupt. It was just a gut feeling which I expressed. I didn't really research any references nor do I intend to do so for the sake of argument. And yes, suggestions that Linux be preferred would be fine. However I do believe a lot of work of porting FOSS software to Windows and Mac platforms is an important effort of volunteers and a major part of FOSS efforts and need to be given visibility too. What better way than to show them running on windows? :-) . Peace. Isn't it the call of the user whether s/he want to use Winduhs or Linux? In the specific case of this photograph, the user is Ravikant who dual boots between the two. The activity taking place when that photo was snapped had nothing to do (directly) with the Software Freedom Day -- Ravikant happened to be attending the event, and I believe it's his choice what OS he wants to use. [snip] Taking a call was not meant to refer to the choice of the OS by the user here, but I was refering to Linux Lingam's statement that ILUG-D has to take a call whether this is against ILUG-D's principle or not. I, of course, completely agree and support all your comments about free software and this being completely appropriate as this was a Software Freedom Day and not a linux day (Had mentioned the same in my earlier email as well repetitively). [ilugd] Multimedia workshop
Hi, Various people have been kicking around the idea of a FLOSS multimedia workshop, and the Open g.is.s. folk are still interested in coming to Delhi. So, we have to decide on several things within the next 2-3 days. Please send any input by then: (a) Duration: The visiting folk want two days, but I am not sure if we will have enough to cover, and enough of an audience. (b) Dates: Possible dates are: (i) Oct. 4/5 (ii) Oct. 11/12: The g.i.s.s. folk are currently expected then, but can conceivably be asked to come the previous weekend. (c) Venue: Needs a decent sound set-up, as well as normal things like overhead projectors. Finally, a PC with Ubuntu studio, various additional applications, and tested for sound (!) is needed. Possibilities are: (i) Sarai seminar room: Available 4th/5th, and on the 11th, but not on the 12th. We would also like to avoid the 11th, as there is a 3-day Sarai event planned after that. (ii) JNU: Andrew? Possible? Sound-setup available? (iii) Other: Please volunteer, keeping in mind the above requirements. (d) Other issues: We might have a separate workshop at KIT, Ghaziabad, during one of those weekends. So, someone will need to take the lead role in managing this workshop. I would like to be there if they are going to share with us some info on FOSS tools to be used as 'production-quality' alternates to proprietary ones. Because I don't want to touch any Apple FCP or Windows Avid for video editing. If that is the case, then we not only come out with good story idea but also able to influence some of my friends in mainstream media who use closed source products and bring them to GNU/Linux platform. But if the event is just about introduction to some kinds of sound then I may lose my appetite, as we learnt a lot about sound in our Film making days in Jamia MCRC ;-) Swapnil ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

[ilugd] Linux Introduction class for ELCOT Laptop users
Friends. The laptop provided by ELCOT is preloaded with OpenSuse and Ubuntu linux. But most of the people dont know how to use them. They struggle a lot little little things like bluetooth, installing apps, games, etc It will be so nice, if we give a one day seminar on ow to use linux for all elcot laptop users. It is necessary too. I see more users remove linux and put windows with local service engineers. VirtualBox is there. but they dont know about it. It is our responsible thing to urge and train people to use linux. So, please arrange a tutorial day. We can get all the email ids from elcot. Of these, whom did you expect to respond? Did you start by trying to contact the Chennai LUG? Or, better yet, ELCOT, to see if *they* had made any arrangements for support.
