You may look at customizing Linux distributions off the shelf, Suse

The project development is still under progress. The delivery of the
solution I want to provide to the end-users as a stand-alone Linux Distro
along with pre-installed Traffic Squeezer solution. Since Traffic Squeezer
has the code both in kernel level as well as in user-space I want to make it
as a complete custom Linux installable distro and bundle.

I would question the need for a custom distro.

Seriously, if the skeleton is there from an established distro, and you only
have a few tweaks here and there in the kernel to really worry about, the
I'd say work with the distro and build a package (along with building the
kernel package or kernel modules needed).

I'd probably do it built on top of a minimum debian (say, a net install) and
try and fit things in to the Debian Way of doing things. Like all major
distros they have well-defined ways to do stuff. A skeleton saves you a lot
of pain (don't repeat yourself) and enforces discipline which might otherwise
make your design messy and repetetive (don't repeat yourself).

If you still really think you need to avoid the standard design and policies
then you can certainly go ahead with a nasty installer script that installs
on top of the distro and breaks policies. It won't be as popular as a real
package though.

Hi,
You could look at Voyage Linux (linux.voyage.hk) if the target platform is like
a Soekris Net 45xx/48xx or other WRAP or ALIX boards.
Its debian based. I have used it to create a hotspot controller with
Chillispot, FreeRadius, MySQL and Lighttpd.

[ilugd] Samba + anti-virus

2008-10-18 Thread Raj Mathur
A client is running a few hundred Winduhs PCs in his office, with 3
Linux FC Samba servers. Facing tons of problems with viruses on the
shares, so we're looking for a Samba+Anti-virus solution.

1. Investigated Samba-VScan and Scannedonly. Both are totally alpha,
and both refuse to compile against the Samba 3.0.28a sources. Knocked
out at the starting gate itself.

2. Need to investigate an IDS (Snort) running in conjunction with Samba.
Has anyone tried (or heard of) this as a Samba anti-virus solution?

3. Any other possibility (apart from switching the desktops to Linux,
which is currently not feasible)?

There are Hard disk case available which are used for this very purpose,
converting regular HD to USB, they come with power cable and adapter, so to
use them you have to plug in the supply separately.

Yes it is available, in nehru place you can find lots of shops selling them.
Cost varies from 100 to 500+ INR depending on brand and other things.

Yes, Samba-Vscan was the first option I tried. It didn't compile at all

it's a proof of concept. I'm looking for something a bit more robust.

If you don't want an extra power supply probably because it'd be too
cumbersome to carry around, then you can purchase a laptop hard disk
along with its case. The case will cost 150-300 INR approx.
