[ilugd] BOSS Linux by C-DAC?

2009-07-28 Thread Linux Lingam
Dear all,

I remember a few years ago LFY magazine distributing the government
initiative, BOSS Linux, with its copies.
What is the status of BOSS today? Is it the Red Flag of India, yet?
Also, i heard a lot of community-folk murmering about how free is free
in BOSS, and about it's indic support. All i get from the site is that
it's based on debian.

[ilugd] [OT] Quote Unquote

2009-07-28 Thread Amit Sharma
Quote Unquote...

Q: What makes you believe Linux will continue to gain momentum?

A: I think, fundamentally, open source does tend to be more stable
software. It's the right way to do things. I compare it to science
vs. witchcraft. In science, the whole system builds on people looking
at other people's results and building on top of them. In witchcraft,
somebody had a small secret and guarded it -- but never allowed others
to really understand it and build on it.

Traditional software is like witchcraft. In history, witchcraft just
died out. The same will happen in software. When problems get serious
enough, you can't have one person or one company guarding their
secrets. You have to have everybody share in knowledge.

Hi..Baddi is in Himachal Pradesh... I know lots off stuff about linux and
Solaris due to Sun's campus ambassador program in our clg. But ur links
will be helpfull, thanks. But the real problem is of getting started and
just breaking the surface, coz many students just dont know definition
of software. I have around 200 students in this group with very uneven
intellect as on one hand there are students i talked about and on the other
hand some are just brillant programs but acute knowledge. So class becomes
pretty boring sometime for these students.
I wonder if movies like Hackers3, Pyrates of silicon valley could makes
things rolling and hepl them understand better. My friend at MIT suggested
this idea but i wonder if that could work here coz english is another
problem with rural areas.
