Yep, I bought a Dell Inspiron from a retailer in Bangalore last year,
without OS. Everything works flawlessly on Ubuntu. Not underpowered too.

Oh yeah I had forgotten about the headphone problem! Well I would rate the
experience as close but not quite flawless then.
Also I just saw a Dell Vostro 1014 on sale with Ubuntu on it at a shoppers stop
in Delhi near Rajouri Gardens. Didn't have much time to check the details but
it's a great option.

Just plug in a headphone/earphone/speaker to the front headphone jack, and
you'll see.
Requires backported ALSA module to fix this issue.

I've got a Dell Vostro V-13 that is part of their N-series systems. It came
with Ubuntu pre-installed, which I subsequently placed Fedora over. But
more importantly, all of the components - built-in webcamera, wifi, ethernet,

I will highly recommend the Dell Vostro to anyone.

Buying PC / Laptop without MS product will not guarantee that you will
be able to exploit its full hardware capability on Linux. I purchased
laptop with FreeDOS, failed to get some features (like audio recording
/ webcam ) worked at all.

Even buying preinstalled Linux may also be not a solution. Example is
"Intel Classroom tablet". Preinstalled Ubuntu, works excellent, but if
you want to its upgrade, other flavour, you will find stylus (touch
screen / wifi / bluetooth) not working and company advise you not to
upgrade. Do it at your risk + lose of warranty.

In some cases, pre-installed M$ product, can work very well as dual
boot on any flavour of Linux. So YMMV.

Unless hardware company support FOSS, give you freedom, it is
struggle. Better combine hand to fight this struggle rather than
developing one's skill in resolving issues only. Legal / Political /
Social fronts are equally important.

What did you do? Explaining that may help. Is this an ext4 partition?
Is the issue related to inability of certain versions of grub to load
ext4 partitions?

If so, installing the relevant module from grub command line may help.

I faintly recall breaking this system when I encountered that problem,
and none of the rescue CDs I had could support ext4. Was forced to do
a reinstall, first one in a loong time!!

Have you checked that?

Hello Rakesh,

I didn't asked that whether there is separate /home partition or not on the
HDD. Actually i suggested you to use one...:P And can you provide us your
installation/up-gradation logs of the broken machine? If possible. And also
tell us the hardware you are using. And do consider logs carefully, they can
give you a good idea about your problem like failure of up-gradation of
a particular package.
