Or was MS on a strong footing by giving lip service to OSS while pushing their own products? With OSS local community participation down to a trickle? Plus, if you see the point of the 'customers' a wholistic event builds more trust than a one sided affair. This bit I completely disagree with, what wholistic events are we talking about here? Have you heard of a single MS event where OSS biggies have been invited to present their case? How does one build trust with a customer, when someone is standing on the stage in an event like LA and proclaiming TCO advantages for the products of a sponsor of the event (which coincidently is selling products in a manner not in line with OSS philosophy). The way I see it there are 3 stands here: 1. The event organizers really believes in the stand they took and are ready to defend it 2. The event organizers is justifying it's stand by sugar coating the basic facts (a CYA tactic) 3. The event organizers had a noble intention however that did not work out as planned and a lesson has been learnt I believe, through this thread, we are only trying to understand which of the 3 above (or maybe a 4th option) is the truth here. Either way, LFY's contribution to OSS is not being questioned and is appreciated. Not sure but I think there is a significant performance gain incase you're doing things like video editing, etc. Incase of normal use, that's 10k down the drain. I've read quite a few opinions online but most of them do not mention the specific models available in India, or do not address the Linux compatibility issue at all. There are 2 components to the blackberry solution - the server (that polls your mail server for new mail) and the handset. 2. The handset is on closed source proprietery OS. I don't know of any plans to move to linux. 3. The blackberry server is hosted on a windows server machine 4. I know currently the blackberry server can integrate with outlook and lotus notes email servers to poll and transmit email to your handset (also reverse traffic for sync) 5. I believe there is a roadmap in place for integration with open source mail servers too like postfix/sendmail though I don't think it is currently supported. Now, comparison between Trio and BB: 1. Try google.com 2. The basic solution features of BB are push mail and security, since they are pushing this mail post encryption. 3. You can compare this with the basic solution features for Trio and see how it goes, from what I remember, Trio is just a simple SMTP/POP2/IMAP pull based solution. RE: [ilugd] ILUGD at LinuxAsia2004 status
Hi Raj, I'm probably asking you to repeat this but have been going through the mailing list mails and could'nt find the mail that gave details of LinuxAsia...could you repost? I am basically looking for dates/timings/venue to reach a decision what to offer to present/demo. We're moving! - - Ghane (known to the police as Sanjeev Gupta), who'll be speaking at the event, has promised us 5 PCs complete with monitors, keyboards, mice and network cards. Way to go! You did mention that one of them would have 1G memory, didn't you Ghane? ;-) - - Ankur Rohatgi (an old-time Linux fan who, unfortunately for us, has been away from the community for too long a time now) has promised 2 17 monitors. Thanks! - - Sandip Bhattacharya was the first volunteer to raise his hand -- and we hadn't even started threatening him yet! Thanks, Sandip, I will sleep easier knowing that you're there. - - Tarun Dua is back tomorrow (5th -- today?) evening and getting after the t-shirt maker to deliver 200 t-shirts by day-after. - - Tarun is also planning to spend a few sleepless nights making CDs for sale. What we're still missing: Volunteers! C'mon, Sandip can't do everything alone. Please roll up in your hordes and make this event one to remember! Signage. Beg, threaten or coerce your family/friends/anyone else good with a brush in her/his hand to make posters. The more the merrier, and none get turned away. Cash. Let's take this step when we get a bit closer. No tearing hurry about it right now. Demos. If you can implement a demo and be there or train volunteers in time to be able to showcase your idea, please contact the list ASAP. Heterogeneous networks? Schools? A funky server? Bandwidth management? Something esoteric like networking using Ham radio, or another place where Linux is not normally seen? C'mon, let's have your ideas! All in all, we're moving well, let's keep up the momentum. RE: [ilugd] Mentor Required
I have been using vmware for quite a while and found it to be really flexible and worth the moolah. Why don't you download the eval and try it out for yourself. Does anyone know a open-source alternative? Also, can anyone give me names of open source vulnerability assessment softwares like nessus? They are charging you for the benefits that they feel they bring you, and most of their customers are more than willing to pay the price. From the point of view of the customers business, the money that they charge is more than made up from the benfits of the software. Re: [ilugd] IPTABLES-NAT FTP directory listing problem
Create a passive connection with the FTP client. FTP uses random ports for directory listing which is being blocked by your fw. Regards, Akshay Lamba - Original Message - From: Mani [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thursday, November 27, 2003 12:16 pm Subject: [ilugd] IPTABLES-NAT FTP directory listing problem I recently replaced a Netgear firewall/router with a RH 9 box running IPTABLE's. I configured iptables for NAT/MASQ using webmin. The configuration works perfectly fine except for one small problem; LAN users are able to conntect to ftp server, but they cannot get a directory list from the ftp server. They get an ILLEGAL port command (502), Cannot build data connection: connection refused. I have no rules set for filetering.. Re: [ilugd] samba masala dosa
Are you able to open the share via the IP of the linux machine? Regards, Akshay - Original Message - From: LinuxLingam [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wednesday, November 26, 2003 2:01 am Subject: [ilugd] samba masala dosa argh! have successfully configured samba server such that in the network neighbourhood of a win98 pc, i can finally see the hostname of the sambapc. double-click: and it says //[hostname] is not accessible. the specifiedcomputer did not receive your request. try again later. [hostname] contains the netbios name as specified in smb.conf of the linux pc. 1) username and passwd added to linux box. 2) username and passwd passed on to smbpasswd 3) encrypted password on in samba. 4) win98 windows logon (right after boot) uses *same* username and passwd. for good measure, the 'identification' of the pc is also the same username. 5) the work group is identical for both pcs. 6) iptables ipchains, default firewalls (lokkit, network security, etc)are all disabled. 7) the linux samba server does show up in the network neighbourhood, which means they can see each other. 8) once, using smbclient, did successfully log on to the win98 pc and mount its shared folders to the linux pc. 9) googled extensively. 10) the shares under samba are set up correctly. (i.e., there is a sub-directory all ready to be shared with the win box). what's going on? ??
