2003-12-15 Thread Anuj Sharma

hi,

thats right narsingh, the command-line param is myconf=scan (only when
someone has made a persistent home) myconfig=/mnt/hdaX' (x=1,2,3...
depends) otherwise. but that doesnt seem to restore the complete settings.
in particular the xvrefresh rate is not restored, nor is the desktop
setting (including the wallpaper - which got me thinking about this).

LiFY is actually based on Knoppix. As far as I
remember, Knoppix uses the cheatcode myconfig=scan
or floppyconfig or floppyconf in recent editions.
You can try these cheat codes. LiFY actually does not
tell you as to which edition it is based on, so may be
some hit and trial is required.

Hello Everyone
If you want to have a remote access to linux then you can do it very
easily. There are many sites on the net which provides u shell accounts.
http://cyberspace.org/ is one such site. Just go to this site and register
there to get a login name and password. Then telnet to cyberspace.org. Then
you ll get a Login prompt just like u get when you boot a linux box. Enter
proper login name and password and enjoy the heat of linux. You can also
choose between various shells available at cyberspace like csh, bash, ksh
etc. So...even if u dont ve linux installed on ur system, u can practice n
get the feel of it\

Compaq generally has limited support for Linux. They
also advice you not to upgrade kernel or you will lose
any warantees etc. - as if warantees mean anything if
a kernel was unstable on a certain hardware.

Subject: [ilugd] The December Meet
Date: Wed, 19 Nov 2003 17:26:39 +0530
Dear all,

We hope to make a small beginning in the right direction with regards to
the theme-based ILUGD meets. The next meet on 21 Dec 03 Sunday (timings
later) at :-
B6, Raksha Bhawan, Man Singh Rd (opposite Indira Kala Kendra) (between
Rajpath and Andhra Pradesh Bhawan.

The theme is - Helping GNUbies.

The following are planned :-
* An introductory talk on the Linux Movement.
* To show Linux on a machine and how the utilities can be easily used :-
Openoffice.org, xmms,mozilla, evolution, A game.
* To show a simple install of a Linux Distribution.
* To show them some books, resources available so that they are aware.
* Showcase some of the steps of LL's Formula For Freedom based Samadhi or
should it be Nirvana?
* To keep a few Knoppix etc CDS available for sale.
* To allow them to meet some of 'the Gang', who can answer some questions.

How all of you can help!
* With ideas. We crystallise by say 01Dec and execute after that.
* With participation - Though I'm a Linux enthusiast, I live in the Windows
world of Government - I'm not a day to day user of Linux - though I hope to
be in my next posting/appointment. I need help with each aspect of the
above.
* With help - Volunteers required please who can showcase the install, the
use of the Seven Steps to Samadhi programmes, speak on Newbie topics.
* With resources - For example, I'd appreciate if you can bring some Linux
books, CDs or something to the meet to show/inspire/educate the Newbie.
* By passing the word to Newbies about this Golden Opprtunity - if we can
get even say a dozen newbies of whom say even three-four get hooked - we'd
have achieved success. Anything more than that would be good success, great
success or extraordinary success (depending on how many come .AND. become
Linux-lovers).

I'd be able to do a little bit of each of the things I've asked help for -
but the success of an ILUGD Meet depends on - how many ILUGDites actually
come, and as importantly, how many get 'involved' in organising the meet.

Now, dear ILUGDites - the cat is out of the bag. Let's put our words into
action and move forward to make the Meet a success.

PS - I promise to deliver on the Jungle Juice ;-) .

This time the theme of the Dec. 21st ILUGD Meet is
7 Steps to the Software Samadhi by LinuxLingam

i happened to see this kind of theme based meets in bangaloere. quite
impressed by the presence there. wish i can see something like that
happening in delhi also. i happened to attaend some meets based on Linux
and WLAN, embedded Linux, Indian Languages on Linux etc. believe me
the
presence was 100 in some of the successfull meets. and i believe there
shudn't be any problem in taking some good ideas from somewhere else. may
be
we can come out with something little better and spend quality time during
meets.

Hi Anuj
This month we have included Bhavya OS instead of LiFY on popular demand of
readers to get taste of other Linux Distro . We have got some reports of
the CD not working properly on few PC's . On further inspection we got the
followig reponse from Bhavya Soft please send the problems faced by you
directly to them

We have identified that the /preinit occurs
only with LG CD-Rom Drives, LG-CDRoms do not seem to
support mount() system call( used by slash shell to
mount the BhavyaOS CD), as it is with the RedHat
Kernel, This has been tested and failed with the
RedHat nash shell also, we are thus shortly making
available a new binitrd.gz and binstall.gz on our site
which have a seperate static mount utility to acheive
this, with regards to troubles starting X-Server in
some win 98 installations, this is due to the
preloading of heavy windows drivers as windows starts,
we recommending using Safe mode DOS prompt and run
bhavya.bat( bhavya.bat be edited to remove vga=0x315
and hda=scsi) . Kindly redirect any complaints to the
link below.
http://www.freewebs.com/bhavyasoft/contact.html

Kindly ask the users to give the hardware details
along with the last few lines of the error
encountered.

we hope this would solve the problem some of you are facing

try the text based os selection (use cntrl-x to shift from the graphical to

number denotes the refresh rate of your screen which is usually the
defaulting parameter in this kinda error. if you know your screen refresh
