[ilugd] Ruby on Rails

2006-10-18 Thread Mairu Gupta

Hello all!

I've been missing in action for a long time :)
It's been busy here, tough life here in Canada!

One of my clients wants to develop applications on the ROR platform (Ruby on
Rails)
I though this would be a perfect place to enquire if people are looking for
work in that area.

Please get back to me via email -- services-at[bluesprint]dot-com

Cheers!

[ilugd] 1 million dollars in open source ;)

2004-08-08 Thread Mairu Gupta

Want to win $1 million? Try this

Are you a tech whizard? Well, then Computer Associates has a challenge for you
which could win you a $1 million!

Computer Associates has announced the Ingres Million Dollar Challenge, an
unprecedented offer to the open source community to develop migration toolkits
for Ingres r3, which was released under the CA Trusted Open Source License.

The unique offer is designed to leverage the global developer talent pool, while
providing substantial financial compensation to those who successfully meet the
challenge.

Under the terms of the offer, open source developers are invited to create
solutions that enable users of Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase Adaptive
Enterprise Server, IBM DB2 Universal Database, Informix and/or MySQL to migrate
to the Ingres r3 database platform.

Qualifying solutions will be eligible for cash awards of up to $400,000, with a
total purse of $1 million.

The challenge is open only to individuals who on the date of their submission of
an entry are Open Source Community Members, of legal age, and are legal
residents of, and are physically located in India, the 50 United States and the
District of Columbia, Canada (except Quebec Province), Mexico, United Kingdom,
China, Australia and New Zealand.

Full details of The Challenge eligibility and the official rules are available
at http://ca.com/ingres/challenge.

CA announced the offer at LinuxWorld in San Francisco. The offer began on August
5, 2004, and submissions will be accepted until February 1, 2005.

Six winners will be announced at caworld, CA's annual user conference, April 17-
21, 2005 in Orlando, Fl.

CA's Ingres Million Dollar Challenge underscores our commitment to creating an
optimal working relationship between ourselves and the open source community,
said Mark Barrenechea, executive vice president of product development at CA.

This relationship benefits CA and our customers by allowing us to leverage the
cumulative talent of the community, while generating significant opportunities
for open source developers around the world.

Open source technology has become increasingly appealing to organizations
seeking to lower total cost of ownership while taking advantage of the
accelerated innovation provided by the open source community.

These advantages are particularly attractive in the database space, where
proprietary solutions can add significant cost to business solutions and greatly
limit the ability of IT to respond to changing requirements.

Because it combines open source licensing, advanced features and
enterprise-class scalability, Ingres is a particularly compelling alternative to
proprietary database platforms, said the media release.

Computer Associates is the world's largest management software company, which
delivers software and services across operations, security, storage, life cycle
and service management to optimize the performance, reliability and efficiency
of enterprise IT environments.

Re: [ilugd] Re: Linux Delhi July meet

2004-07-15 Thread Mairu Gupta
As for me i am ready to give this presentation if
enough ppl are interested. this presentation requires
the users to have understanding of sound and music
authoring. This means you should have an idea of how
 sound design is done.
Also, it requires understanding of track overlays,
recording techniques etc i.e you should know how
recording studios work. Then i can explain how could
you setup a recording studio under Linux.
Ya guyz a recording studio with minimal hardware.
Most of the recording activities can be performed
 under linux using softwares.
Infact me and LL have a complete partition on over
hard disks dedicated to audio stuff. These partitions
have full fledged linux distro named Agnula
 installed.

so, if there are ppl who are interested and have
understanding, i am keen to share this knowledge.

twelve hot chocolate fudges at nirula's ice-cream parlour.
sirtaj, the famous KDE developer, had two.

all this after a delicious chinese dinner at Yo! China at Priya Complex,
 in vasant vihar.

which was what the partying gang at linux-delhi headed to, after
hungrily devouring some hot and spicy momos at the open-air stall
 outside, at the promenade.

mayank and the LFY team had also organized chilled Cokes for the parched
iluggers at the meet in okhla. i think more than 35 showed up for the
 meet.

many got their Linux-Delhi tee-shirts. yeaah!

ankur dazzled everyone with his super-sleek, super-sexy Dell laptop.

raj mathur had some eye-candy on his laptop too, that was rather
inspiring in the lazy, afternoon heat...

and i won't even mention the eye-candy sandip savoured at nirula's...

so why did you miss the meet? you thought we were some born-losers who
had nothing better to do than talk bone-cut dry geek yack?

you're mistaken! we've been having some really juicy, clubby, kick-ass
meets that are great excuses to party. and the newbies especially love
the burst of energy, enthusiasm, and bonding they receive from delhi's
 LUGers.

example: anindya sen, arrived in delhi about six months ago from
calcutta. new, bewildering city. new job. drops in at the ilug-d meet
today, and drops home by late evening, after having made dozens of new
friends and contacts, with similar outlooks and tastes.

see you next month, 16th May, unless you wanna spend another sunday,
sitting bored at home, watching lousy reruns on telly or hiding
 eternally behind that photon-spitting monitor.

[ilugd] Linux servers hacked the most

2004-03-02 Thread Mairu Gupta
[quote]
DIGIRISK SPECIALIST Mi2g is likely to get right up the noses of open source
advocates everywhere by claiming that Linux servers are the most breached
online servers available.
The London based outfit said that Linux is the worst, Windows servers had got
better and BSDs and Mac OSX were the safest.

Mi2g claimed it had analysed 17,074 successful digital attacks against online
servers and networks in January 2004, with Linux accounting for 13,654
breaches, and Windows for 2005 followed by BSD and Mac OS X with 555 breaches
worldwide.

But, the company is quick to point out that its figures don't take into
account the numerous malware attacks against Windows and mass website
defacements were counted as multiple attacks.

Hmm, may I suggest that there be a PayPal (http://www.paypal.com) donation

I will agree. Although development can be taken care of by members to some

Already seen that link when Sandip mentioned it.
It is not the same as a forum. It will not put you in the top lines of search
engines in terms of popularity and will not in any case help newbies with the
cold interface. It looks like a very useful setup, the problem however,
remains that our two main goals for the forum are :

-Increase Popularity
-Be more accessible and user-friendly to newbies

We can cancel the idea if this seems so far fetched.
No issues.

[ilugd] The forum begins..

2004-02-19 Thread Mairu Gupta
Hi everyone

We are just considering to get the forum started, lets see if we can pull it
off. We cannot do this without everyone's support. ALmost Everybody has had a
say in the discussion, and most tend to agree that trying wouldnt do any harm.
If it works, it's great, and if it doesn't, then as good.

Till now, we have three main forums ?

PhpBB, vbulletin, Invision Board.

Out of which, vBulletin and Invision are fee-based.
I suggest we can start from a free one, gauge the response, then move on to
cost-based ends. What does everyone think ?

PHPbb might be reasonably secure if somebody is good at PHP and plug in the
holes. So far, we have Manpreet Nehra ready to volunteer and study the phpBB
forum, and wants a week's time. I think he might as well begin.

If there are any more suggestions/comments, lets add to this.

Re: [ilugd] Possible additional feature for the list

2004-02-18 Thread Mairu Gupta
And how will the people respond to forum posting summaries ? Checking
and responding to emails is far easier than checking the forum website.

See guys, a forum is not a must read for everyone of you, to begin with.
It's opt-in. It's for our popularity, and the fact that all good websites have
forums can be better explained : Most websites that are growing, have a core
user base, and are willing to expand and need the expansion, opt in, most
likely, for a forum. It has been proved, accept or not, that after the
introduction of forums, the visibility of the website has increased manifold,
it attracts a wealth of people from around the world.

 - If we allow posting of anonymous users, we will have to deal with
spam. If we require users to register before posting a message, will the
search engines be able to search and archive the discussions ?

Yes ! It depends on how you select your dynamic URL's to show.
I can explain later in detail.

 - If anonymous postings is allowed, who will deal with weeding out the
spam? We are all volunteers, so someone will have to take additional
 responsibilities.

Anonymous postings is a bad idea, and will not be allowed.
We are all volunteers, and im sure we will have some people volunteering to be
moderators.

The question is who ? What happens if the volunteer
get slack in his duties ?

I am ready. I think we know the people that are responsible, and won't slack
like that. That is what strengthens our community here.

thread view is possible and archives are maintained, this way person
who joins this list will scan thru already posted ques and will not
put up already discussed questions again.

 am i right?

 No, you're hopelessly wrong.

Wrong ? That is very right. You're on !
-Thread view is possible.
-Archives are maintained in the sense that threads are still there.
-Search feature is there, so you are right.

I am also willing to give for free hosting space for the forums.

2004-02-18 Thread Mairu Gupta
 Mairu,

If you feel so strongly about this, so far you have volunteered to :-

 1. Get the free hosting space and install your favourite forums software on
 that.

It is the ILUG community that decides.

 2. Coax Raj to point forums.linux-delhi.org to the newly created forums
 site.

Coax ? Why would i need to coax ? It's not my personal benefit.

Which he would probably do if you convince him that there shall be no
advertisements on Linux Delhi forums(to support the free hosting space that
 you are providing)

That is not a question, i didnt think we went to that low a standard yet.
since you have information about my coaxing, i suppose you must know i didnt
say anything like that.

and how it would help achieve deficit free Union budget,
gender equality, world peace. apart from furthering the cause of
FLOSS(Free Libre and Open Source Software)

Well, supposedly yeah

 3. Post the Forum's Subscribe URL to the mailing list and have an Opt-in
 from members to the Forums
 ...
 x. Rope in others who supported the idea of forums as volunteers to
 moderate it.

Thanks for the instructions boss.
Unfortunately, this forum cannot be run without the experienced member base of
the LUGD coming forward to moderate/sustain it. I have only volunteered for
hosting space, not installing, managing, moderating. So, i'm not the only one
who will be in this. Atleast, we could give it a try guys. I'm not of the view
that forums are the best thing that could happen. But i believe that, beyond
techies, there is a world, where its difficult for normal people, people who
are new to Linux, for them, it's difficult to understand the small intricacies
of Linux, there must be some people who wouldn't appreciate the loads of mail,
or just not like the idea. Maybe its too boring for them.

Because in the current system, you seem to have only two options :
Either go in for all emails or announcements (under construction)

There is no selective reading, that's one thing i think is important for
new people. For people who have been on this list forever, and who aren't
having a problem, will like to continue, but then, can't we change and see ?
Can we not see if this new system brings a new cheer in the sort of
postings/cross postings that usually happen ? We could become more active,
happening, newbie-friendly.

Alright, those were just my 2 bucks.
I am not a complete techie, so i cannot setup a PHPbb. I'll start a separate
thread asking for PHPbb techies who might be able to help.

I think this asks for a community call to get together and try a new lease.

cOmE oN guys !!

Some major positives that i find from the forum community is :

High Popularity For ILUG-D
Better Linux Awareness
Archives more accessible for newbies
Attractive and more friendly environment for newbies
Organized Moderated discussion possible
More community feel

Negatives :

Bandwidth/Hosting

Now seriously, a forum is much more responsibility and time taking.
The mailing list that we use now is free and requires no server space,
however, forums require resources such as hosting space, moderating time, etc.

If the initiative is there from more people, there's no harm to go forward

2004-02-08 Thread Mairu Gupta

at the preparation meet, we decided people at the meet decide on the
text they want to see on posters, and will send a soft copy to me, which
should really be sent directly to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
who is mairu gupta, who phoned-in at the meet and said please count him
in for all things related to poster-design.

mairu will then design, using just text and typography under gnulinux
(sodipodi, scribus) posters, some of them could be A4, some could be
double A4, in black-and-white or color, outputted to desktop printers on
plain sheets, and pasted at the stall. for some raj mentioned you could
try a tiled printout (that scales up design across multiple sheets).

parallally, mairu needs to find out how much does a banner cost, the one
that is usually hand-painted on cloth. this banner is a one-time
investment, should fit on a 6 ft x 6 ft stall (which means it could be
about 6 ft in width, and perhaps 2 to 3 feet in height).

the banner should be all-purpose. it should have the text
www.linux-delhi.org and the maharaja tux penguin illustration.
we could use this at other meets.

once mairu finds out the price, which should be monday afternoon max,
the mailing list could decide if it is agreeable and go ahead with it.

those at the meeting decided we should not go for large-format plotted
outputs, as they cost a huge sum of money. raj said that a volunteer
could print to his desktop printer gratis. others recommended bureaux in
nehru place and other places that charge rs 30 or so per printout.
mairu, please decide what is the best option.

all queries for poster and banner are solely with mairu.

[/quote]

The email can be [EMAIL PROTECTED] !

Since that's my registered email at the ILUGD.
had changed to the hotmail one because i was being blocked by outblaze, for
whatever reason, but now back again.

However, if we need the poster by the 11th, we need to be a little quick with
the idea part. I will enquire the price for the cloth poster tomorrow mornin
and post it on here.

As far as printing the poster is concerned, we would not need more than 5
posters, i suppose, on our stall. Which i can print from my desktop printer
gratis. Second, i will want to create a bigger poster as well, (than just A4),
so that we have a main attention catcher, which i will get printed from
somewhere, and i dont mind bearing the cost for it.

However, i need the ideas for the content and design quickly from everybody.

If you understand what my own inner bliss means,
then if any player in the
team plays without it, the team will loose most
 definitely.

Quote My inner bliss does not means that you keep on doing what ever you
like.

Whoever said THAT.

Quote I am sure there was no bliss inviolved in it.

You know as much as i know unless you were living with Linus, of course.

Quote : Although, it appears to me that you are in a bliss over bliss.

I presume you dont even know what you are talking about.
And by the way, you cant find what bliss means in a dictionary.
I dont feel anger, just pity on your sorry state of naievete understanding.

Quote Whosoever is reading this message, i will recomend to refrain from
making personilised comments such as this.

 with regards
 vivek

It is not hard at all you are just twisting the words.

Never mind, you cannot discuss an issue either, properly.
I thought you'd talk sense, but just dismantling everything as a twist of
words, is just what you could manage.

And please dont talk about personalized comments, first stop doing that
yourself.

I never mean to do a flame war here, but if somebody volunteers to make
something, yours is a rather crude of way of handling it. You must look at
your logo's understand the difference between the work. Illustration and logo,
are two different things.

This will be my last email on the topic.

Good day.

Quote: If every one starts following their bliss then what will be the
identity of Linux-Delhi?? It will not be a group any more. To be part of a
group or tema you have to keep everyone together and also be part of it at the
same time. Every community has a goal of his own which can be acheived only if
everyone works together.

I dont think you understand what was being conveyed.
He made it for his own bliss, and that bliss will help the community most
effectively. There will one in a million individuals who will ultimately play
for their team and not at all look at their own success. For example, the
indian cricket team. In any case, here even success is not the question.
It's about inner bliss. It's a hard thing to understand vivek ji.
Kindly think first. And type after.

Quote: Imagine what will happen to a soccer team if every player, starts
following his own bliss and plays his own game. The result, such a team will
defivnately loose the game. i am saying this on my experience as a soccer team
captian, in my school.

If you understand what my own inner bliss means, then if any player in the
team plays without it, the team will loose most definitely.

Quote: Linus designed a toy OS (read his posting on minix newgroup dated
25/8/1991), it was the community which has made it stand out and a challenge
for M$, else linux is nothing more than a piece of code.

If you properly understand what a community is, then you see, Linus first made
it out of his inner bliss. He did not make it for the community to advertise
it for him. What he did first was most important, which was out of his inner
bliss. What the community did came later. Everything is only a piece of code,
by the way. If you like, inner bliss too.

Quote : please dont send me irrational, philosophical comments such as your
own bliss

You really must be paranoid to call it irrational.
