[ilugd] K3b does not copy CDs containing multiple data tracks

2005-06-25 Thread Navneet Choudhary
  hi,

i am using Mandrake-10.1(Official) on Intel based pc
having these version of GNU/Linux packages:-

Kernel-2.6.8.1-12mdk
K3b Version:0.11.16
Cdrecord-2.01-1.1.101
KDE Version: 3.2.3

with CD WRITER,
SAMSUNG(IDE) TSSTcorp' 'CDW/DVD TS-H492A

When i try to copy VCD.K3b generates following error (different for
each writer):-

data tracks.

2.IOMEGA CD-WR > K3b does not copy CDs containing multiple data
tracks.

This system is fully updated with latest available packages.

What should i do now?
Since, as per official CDRecord website cdrecord is now

Should i compile this source package for my distro, after
uninstalling cdrecord?.
I have following packages with me:

cdrtools-2.01-01a03.src.rpm

[ilugd] Fedora Core 2-Modules loading problem + Unsuppoted Chipset

2005-05-02 Thread Navneet Choudhary
Hi,

We have recently installed Fedora Core 2 on HCL Server with Super Micro
X5DPL-8GM motherboard.

System specs:

Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.40GHz [HT]
Adaptec AIC7902 Ultra320 SCSI adapter [Dual channel]

36.7 GB [SEAGATE Model: ST336607LW]
512MB RAM ECC [hynix]

NIC:
Intel Corp.|82557/8/9 [Ethernet Pro 100]
Intel Corp.|82545EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller

I have prtially updated this install using up2date
i.e kernel,kernel-utils,iptables,squid,rpm,wget,xinitrc etc.

When i start system with kernel-smp-2.6.5-1.358 or kernel-2.6.5-1.358

Queries:-
1>I am getting following error during startup:
ACPI: S3 and PAE do not like each other for now, S3 disabled.

agpart: Unsupported Intel Chipset (Device id:254c)

Does this means Super Micro M/B is not supported by FC2?

2>When i boot it with new kernel-2.6.10-1.771_FC2

system shows "usbdevfs not supported by kernel"

Does it means usbdevfs not support new kernel.

3>i can't able to load modules (i.e ip_nat_ftp and ip_conntrack)

When i tried to manually load module:-

[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# /sbin/insmod ip_conntrack
insmod: can't read 'ip_conntrack': No such file or directory
[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]#

Slocate finds ip_conntrack and ip_nat_ftp modules

[ilugd] Redhat 9 Server Recovery - HELP

Hi folks,

I am running redhat linux 9(Kernel 2.4.20-8) server on Intel P4 system,with

This server is acting as Firewall & Gateway.

[ilugd] Windows 2k/2k3 won't boot <==Mandrake 9.2/10.1 Official

2005-03-25 Thread Navneet Choudhary

Hi list,

I am using Mandrake 10.1 Official on multiboot system.

After installing Mandrake 9.2 (yes 9.2 NOT 10.1) on un-partitioned space.
Windows stop booting.

Since as per default GRUB setting, it should show non *Linux OS also in Boot
menu.
But, here it is not showing any other OS.

NOTE: Boot loader might be installed on MBR (instead of first non windows
partition)?

So, I booted to Linux & can view non-Linux partition being mounted as
below:

#df-h

/dev/hda1 1G 4.7G 11G 31% /mnt/win_c
/dev/hda5 5.1G 4.6G 418M 92% /mnt/win_d

and

#fdisk -l

NOTE: /dev/hda1 Windows 2000 Professional
/dev/hda5 Windows 2003 Server
/dev/hda6 MISC (FAT16)

Since, I am not getting any windows listing in my Grub boot menu. Therefore,i
have manually added windows entry in it.

Now,
1)when I choose windows 2000 at boot time:

ERROR o/p:-

Chainloader +1

2)When I choose windows 2003
Root(hda0,5)
Filesystem type unknown,partition ox6
Chainloader +1

Lastly I tried installing Mandrake 10.1 OfficialOnce again it could not
able to recognise windows OS installed on my Hard Disk.

Now, please suggest how to revert back to my original configuration.
Running Windows OS without formatting. Since it contains lots many important
installation that can’t be ported without running original Windows.

Thanks and Regards.

[ilugd] Can't able to create user with DOTS in user name?

2005-03-05 Thread Navneet Choudhary
hi list,

I can't able to create users having decimal point(s) in their name.

i.e a.b
#useradd a.b
userdd: invalid user name 'a.b'

os used:
Redhat 9
Fedora Core 1,2 & 3
Redhat Enterprise ES 3.0

Note: i can create user with dots (i.e navneet.kc) on Redhat 6.2 system.

Any work around for this problem (yes for me atleast?).

Thanks in advance.

Navneet

I am not running any webserver or nay sevice that use port 80 or squid

yes i have used that rule also. But right now Squid it giving trouble after
tightening my system (using iptables firewall)

Squid is working absolutely fine, without firewall(i have already mentioned it

[ilugd] Linux as router (Gateway Server)[Updated]

2005-02-12 Thread Navneet Choudhary
hi list,

I require further co-operation from yours side.

Squid Server is serving as Proxy server, Gateway & Firewall

Problem:
Squid daemon dies at startup.

Here is log output of /var/log/messages

Feb 12 09:15:25 squid squid[3652]: Squid Parent: child process 3654 started
Feb 12 09:15:25 squid (squid): Cannot open HTTP Port
Feb 12 09:15:29 squid squid[3720]: Squid Parent: child process 3722
exited due to signal 6
Feb 12 09:15:32 squid squid[3720]: Squid Parent: child process 4385 started
Feb 12 09:15:32 squid squid[3720]: Squid Parent: child process 4385
exited with status 1
Feb 12 09:15:33 squid (squid): Cannot open HTTP Port

Why my iptables rule blocking squid to open HTTP port.

Note: existing rule being attached at the end of mail

Since, process will not die if I disable/flush my rules?

Squid being started from /etc/rc.local

Where i am doing mistakes?

Please suggest since its causing startup hiccup

Thanks & regards,

Navneet Choudhary

[ilugd] FWD:Customer Focus: Comparing Windows with Linux and UNIX

For Your Study & analysis.

Subject: Customer Focus: Comparing Windows with Linux and UNIX

In the thousands of meetings that Microsoft employees have with
customers
around the world every day, many of the same questions consistently
surface:
Does an open source platform really provide a long-term cost advantage
compared with Windows? Which platform offers the most secure computing
environment? Given the growing concern among customers about
intellectual
property indemnification, what's the best way to minimize risk? In
moving
from an expensive UNIX platform, what's the best alternative in terms
of
migration?

Customers want factual information to help them make the best decisions
about these issues. About a year ago, a senior Microsoft team led by
General
Manager Martin Taylor was created to figure out how we could do a
better job
helping customers evaluate our products against alternatives such as
Linux/open source and proprietary UNIX. This team has worked with a
number
of top analyst firms that have generated independent, third-party
reports on
cost of acquisition, total cost of ownership, security and
indemnification.
Some of the studies were commissioned by Microsoft, while others were
initiated and funded by the analysts. In each case, the research
methodology, findings and conclusions were the sole domain of the
analyst
firms. This was essential: we wanted truly independent, factual
information.

At the same time, our worldwide sales organization is going even deeper
with
customers to understand their needs and create a feedback loop with our
product development teams that enables us to deliver integrated
solutions
that support real-world customer scenarios, and comprehensively address
issues such as manageability, ease of use and reliability.

I'm writing to you and other business decision makers and IT
professionals
today to share some of the data around these key issues - and to
provide
examples of customers who opted to go with the Windows platform rather
than
Linux or UNIX, and how that's playing out for them in the real world.
Much
more information on this is at www.microsoft.com/getthefacts.

This email is one in an occasional series of emails from Microsoft
executives about technology and public-policy issues important to
computer
users, our industry, and anyone who cares about the future of high
technology. If you would like to receive these emails in the future,
please

TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP AND ACQUISITION COSTS

In the past few years, you haven't been able to open a computing
magazine or
visit a technology Web site without running into an article about Linux
and
open source. Not surprising: who doesn't like the idea of a "free"
operating
system that just about anyone can tinker with?

But as the Yankee Group commented in an independent, non-sponsored
global
study of 1,000 IT administrators and executives, Linux, UNIX and
Windows TCO
Comparison, things aren't always as they seem: "All of the major Linux
vendors and distributors (including Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Novell [SUSE
and
Ximian] and Red Hat) have begun charging hefty premiums for must-have
items
such as technical service and support, product warranties and licensing
indemnification."

Yankee's study concluded that, in large enterprises, a significant
Linux
deployment or total switch from Windows to Linux would be three to four
times more expensive - and take three times as long to deploy - as an
upgrade from one version of Windows to a newer release. And nine out of
10
enterprise customers said that such a change wouldn't provide any
tangible
business gains.

Yankee also noted that, for larger organizations with complex computer
networks, it's important to look beyond Linux's initial low investment
cost
and consider all of the TCO and ROI factors.

This is exactly what one of our large enterprise customers, Equifax,
did
recently. Equifax, a $1.2 billion U.S.-based enterprise with 4,600
employees
in 13 countries, needed more computing power than its mainframe systems
could deliver for rapidly searching the company's vast marketing
database.
They spent several months conducting an internal analysis, which proved
that, compared with Linux, Windows would realize a 14% cost savings and
shorten their time to market by six months. (Equifax Case Study -
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/facts/casestudies/CaseStudy.asp
x?CaseStudyID=15528)

Another comprehensive, non-sponsored study by Forrester, entitled The
Costs
and Risks of Open Source, drew a similar conclusion: "The allure of
free
software is accelerating the deployment of open source platforms, but
open
source is not free and may actually increase financial and business
risks."

[ilugd] Tarantella query

2004-10-06 Thread Navneet Choudhary
Dear all,
i am in the process of implementing some sort of
Bandwidth/resource management application like Cirtix /Tarantella. We
are at present testing Tarantella for our Oracle based application,
that can be accessed remotely through dialup or other means i.e vsat.

Anything to share about...?
Is there any product that comes under GPL license?

Thanks,
Navneet
