sudden and shocking. raj mathur and gora mohanty were my main links with ilug-d. though i have not been interacting much, i was planning to call on them when BOSS 5.0 gets released and interact with all re govt tenders, school projects. as narendra said, first KG and now Raj. while we can't fill the void, their memories might enthuse more persons and make us more active. [ilugd] Robot programming in CBSE international curriculum
hi all, CBSE has introduced the chapter Programming a Robo in their international curriculum for IX X, with the following topics : 1. ROBO Assembly 2. Programming a ROBO 3. TeProgramming a Robosting debugging. 4. Prepare your ROBO Manual with applications. The learning objectives are : Assembling a ROBO Programming a ROBO. Testing and debugging a ROBO. While there are proprietary packages tools in these topics, there is an interest to recommend FOSS based tools/packages/materials. [CBSE has an objective to make the teaching-learning platform independent and had introduced Linux, MySQL, etc., in the curriculum for ICT]. I would request those interested** -- with some expertise exposure -- to give suggestions re FOSS packages and tools. I would also like to have an interaction with them and would request them to contact me, preferably off the mailing list, thru my gmail id : srini dot it at gmail dot com thanks and best wishes Srinivasan Dr. S. [ilugd] FOSS in Indian University curricula
dear friends : as you might be aware, NRCFOSS worked with Anna Univ to get two FOSS electives in the curriculum since 2006. So far, about 3000 students have taken the courses successfully in B.E. (Comp Science), B.Tech (Information Technology) and MCA. Anna Univ Coimbatore will be having FOSS as core paper in 3rd in B.E., an offshoot of this exercise was to get institutions like Jaya Engg College which -- thanks to the sustained support from LUG other FOSS enthusiasts -- have made greater impact on the growth of FOSS. FOSS electives have been approved in Shivaji University, Kolhapur Rajasthan Tech Univ. Final year B.E. CSE Networking labs in UP Tech Univ are tuned to run on FOSS platform. Punjab Tech Univ a host of others are in the process of introducing FOSS. FOSS subjects -- especially Linux, Python -- have also found their way into the non-engg currirula, especially Biotechnology. Of course, many colleges/univ have got linux as one of the papers (some time a regular one, often for a term or so depending on the efforts enthusiasm of the concerned staff member). I would appreciate if you could send me the copies of / links to FOSS subject offered in the curricula. I also welcome related suggestion / queries. As part of my official duty at NRCFOSS, the syllabus info will be updated in the NRCFOSS portal HRD page ; we have also been involvin local FOSS community as and when efforts are made to interact with the various academic entities. the info can be sent to* : srinivas...@cdac.inand/orsrini.it@ gmail.com thanks and best wishes Srinivasan * CDAC Chennai is moving into new premises inside Tidel Park. Hence the NRCFOSS / BOSS portals are down. Once they are activated, I will update the available info in the HRD page, and send the link thru the LUG group mail. ___ Ilugd mailing list Ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd
Re: [ilugd] AICTE, FOSS and us
dear mohit: i agree that AICTE and other teams are generally happy with proprietary software, and more often than not FOSS is not acknowledged. However, there are a few trying to bring the FOSS culture (Dr. Sivakumar, Dr. Phatak, Dr. Prabhu Ramachandran, etc. of IIT Mumbai, Dr. Om Vikas and Dr. Manoj Gaur of MNNIT Jaipur, etc., to name a few). when we were introducing FOSS in the Anna University curriculum, and pitching for FOSS equivalents to be listed for lab courses, the VC asked a simple question : can you assure me that the software you suggest has been tested to meet the requirements and relevant lab manuals prepared, can it be installed worked on comfortably, will there be support for training the staff to handle these software ... Of course, this was 4-5 years back and things have changed tremendously, but much more need to be done. Please remember : a college chairman will be happy to ANNOUNCE that they are spending 10 crores on software and not 10 lakhs. [My colleagues at NRCFOSS were told by a management that they can afford the cost!!!]. Our take should be more on knowledge/learning/practice, rather than cost. Even stuff like licensing, piracy won't work given the ethical scenario, but virus may be a good point to talk about. A number of colleges use FOSS alternatives in the lab. You yourself have managed to introduced FOSS in the UP Tech computer lab (how is it going? do the lecturers need support?). A set of distros have been released (and some work is still on) with FOSS equivalents running on linux platform for lab. At NRCFOSS we got a group of students staff to run EIE, ECE, ELE experiments for B.E to run using Scilab Octave, instead of Matlab -- and a sort of manual is ready (which i have been sharing with many). However, all these efforts are distributed and sporadic. Instead of claiming that proprietary should be REPLACED with FOSS, we can be more successful if both are listed in the curriculum, to start with. We also need to gather the info about the FOSS usage in labs in a more cohesive manner, and take up the issue in various fora. An exercise we plan to take for next release of BOSS is to gather the various engg egov software and test them to run on BOSS. We could also use the NRCFOSS/BOSS websites to highlight the FOSS alternatives -- the is outdated as of now and is being revamped ; i would also like to provide links to other sites, especially in India where the software support persons are available. Am looking forward to more interactions and will update the list with some of the action steps being planned. I also welcome comments/suggestions. [CDAC Chennai is moving into a new building and the NRCFOSS/BOSS portals are down for the time being. Will alert you all as soon as they are up]. Please excuse me for the long msg. Will try to come up with short msgs with specific steps. thanks, srinivasan. Dr. S. Re: [ilugd] NRCFOSS CDAC BOSS Linux Workshop
hi all: am thankful to satyaakam for drawing my attention to the ILUG-D discussion thread on this topic. since i am a new entrant to the list, i hope you will bear with me for starting this as a new msg, instead of reply to the existing thread. would like to share the following brief info about the NRCFOSS / BOSS workshops. - “FOSS Demystified” workshops -- organized by C-DAC BOSS Centres So far held in Bengaluru (15th Jul), Noida (29 Jul – in Delhi), Mohali (31st Jul), Hyderabad (5th Aug), Thiruvananthapuram (12th Aug), Kolkata (19th Aug) and Delhi (26th Aug). There will be one in Mumbai (15th Sep) and the last of the series in Chennai (23rd Sep is the likely date). Target group : mainly Government officials, but participants have also been from academia from other groups. General agenda : FOSS overview, demo of BOSS distro, a brief presentation on BOSS deployment done (e.g., at Palakkad dist/taluk offices, Chattisgarh - CHOICE (Chattisgarh Online Information System for Citizen Empowerment) project, etc.) The main idea is to create an awarness about FOSS and entice them to look for FOSS-based solutions. At some of these workshop, Inaugural / key note address by eminent persons (to make an impact on the participants) : e.g., Niyam Bhushan at Mohali ; Dr Debesh Das, Min.-in-C of IT, Govt. of West Bengal ; Prof Srivatsan, Pro-Vice Chancellor, IGNOU ; DG, NIC ; Shri Sitaram Chamarty, TCS Hyderabad with best wishes Srinivasan. Re: [ilugd] BOSS on ILUGD list -- sharing a few thoughts
hi all: would like to share some thoughts -- with you, and thru you with ILUG-D members -- in the light of the exchanges at ILUG-D on BOSS. I wouldn't put this as a clarification or official response, but more as an exchange of information / perspective. I hope this will lead to cohesion contribution to/from BOSS efforts. 1. Thanks to Nishant, Nalin, etc. for their appreciative sentiments, and to Karanbir, Kartik, Raj Mathur and others for their frank opinions. 2. Attn.: Manu Mohan : the workshops are targeted primarily at govt staff. We also have plans to support / organize a few sessions focusing on Academic segment. The FOSS in Higher Education, is in fact the major activity of NRCFOSS at AU-KBC Research Centre (for which Satyaakam is one of the key persons). 3. BOSS distro : Both binary the source code (with allied stuff) are available from the repository http://bosslinux.in/downloads 4. Indian language localisation : The .po files files, keyboard layouts, etc., are available at http://downloads.bosslinux.in/Localisation/ As vikram pointed out, the community will have to decide whether it is acceptable or not. I had some brief exchanges with Karunakar and Gora, and hope to get some focussed action in the near future. 5. There are a few packages like Bulk Document Converter, Presentation Tool, etc. -- integrated with BOSS distro, but could be candidates for stand alone packages. 6. Help Desk -- toll free number 1 800 4250 455 is operative from C-DAC Chennai Centre. Currently, there are 4-5 persons responding to queries during office working hours (10 - 5, mon-fri) catering to queries -- in Eng, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada. Mostly, the queries are requests for BOSS CDs/DVDs and on installation issues. bossli...@cdac.in http://webmail.cdac.in/twig/index.php?s%5Bmailbox%5D=mail%2Fsent-mails%5BmailGroup%5D=%2As%5Bmail_startmsg%5D=1s%5Bsortby%5D=dates%5Bsortbyway%5D=1s%5Bdelete-return%5D=msgviews%5Bmailtree%5D=0%7Cc%5Bf%5D=mailc%5Ba%5D=composeform%5bto%5d=bossli...@cdac.in is the email id for sending quries. thanks and best wishes Srinivasan.
