Hi Chirag Thanks a lot for the information and the link. It is not packaged with openSuse, thats why I did not know about it... now I do. :) You're welcome. Re: [ilugd] Undelete in Linux
Hi Chirag This looks great. But can you please provide a download link for the binary/tarball etc? foremost is not exactly a new tool. It was originally made by the United States Air Force Office of Special Investigations and The Center for Information Systems Security Studies and Research , who have made it available as a free software. Its one of the few forensic tools available for linux which of course is used for recovering files. Many distros (including Debian) provide it as part of their packages. Re: [ilugd] Fiesty missing from Ubuntu (Fiesty 7.04) Archives?
The problem though is that since Feisty is no longer in the regular archives, all update-managers etc bomb - and if I use old-releases.ubuntu.com in my source list, I don't get the upgrade. You need to add repositories of gutsy to your sources list which is available in the repos. That is the one you need to upgrade. Don't forget to comment rest of it. sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade That should do the job. The old release is just a mechanism to give you the old packages in an unsupported manner. Putting the stuff there reduces load on mirrors as well since they no longer keep them. Re: [ilugd] Hall of shame http://www.me.com/unsupported_browser/en/
Another one for the road perhaps. I'm not able to view any pics even though FF is supported but seems only for PC (I guess they mean MS-Windows) Many sites do not support various browsers by simply denying access on basis of various config strings. I for example, use iceweasel, a rebranded firefox by debian which many sites including those from big companies like yahoo and google don't recognise and label as not supported for various features which may actually work there. Sites must say we may not work with your browser rather than blanket denials due to search strings not matching. I agree companies may not find time to check for all but why deny? Let the customer go ahead at the risk of some things not working rather than stopping altogether just because the browser/platform is one you haven't tested for? Some may say that I do have the option of changing the string but it defeats the whole purpose and reasons for the rebranding. Re: [ilugd] why is virtualbox not a gpl-violation?
Hi Pratul Very unfortunately the OSE version is in bad shape due to bad response in the community. The last time I checked, it didn't even end up with a 2.6 kernel while the company FSM Labs continues with its product available at a big price. I have been using the OSE version of VirtualBox for almost an year now, and I never faced any problem whatsoever, neither in Debian lenny nor in Ubuntu Intrepid or Hardy. What problems are you facing? Mehul is right. Yes I was referring to RTLinux. It seems to have been bought over by Wind River now with a 2.6 option as well. Does anybody know how good the free version actually is. I remember the professional version costing quite a few lakhs. Windriver seems to be giving with their own version of GNU/Linux - Wind River Linux (as per rtlinuxfree.com). Does anybody have an idea which distro its inspired by. Virtualbox OSE is fine. (New version 2.0.4 just came out incidentally). I only wish parallel port and USB would work on it. Have you had any success with it? (Some people report problem even with the binary one.) This is a big problem when wanting to use old printers and to work on embedded systems. Like Atanu said dual licensing is a case of companies having their cake and eating it too. Re: [ilugd] why is virtualbox not a gpl-violation?
Hi Niyam i can't understand how come this is not a violation of the terms of the GPL, specifically modifications must also be released under GPL. the authors do claim they may eventually roll the enhancements in the GPL version. The site says about the OSE It is functionally equivalent to the full VirtualBox package, except for a few features that primarily target enterprise customers. It doesn't talk about the code. Sun had bought this company which used to make virtualbox sometime back and the GPLed version came up later. Many companies seem to have a business model where they release their software as a GPLed software. Everything is done by community for the software GPLed. The other version the company works on. The other version started with a code base that wasn't GPLed at the time the forking happened. So I don't know think we can claim they are enhancing GPLed software, isn't it? RTLinux had done the same thing. Very unfortunately the OSE version is in bad shape due to bad response in the community. The last time I checked, it didn't even end up with a 2.6 kernel while the company FSM Labs continues with its product available at a big price. I am sure there are many other softwares like this. Ross had described it a bit when he gave an interview to Spectrum magazine. Its interesting to see the open source ulteo offering closed source apps like Skype. Re: [ilugd] Fwd: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:1921] [OT] (possibly) Most user friendly Distro for non-techies
Hi No doubt at all. Knoppix just rocks. What has he done with the Compiz Fusion, its incredibly fast and lightweight??? True. It runs faster than on any other system. The beryl he had given with knoppix 5.1.1 was also similarly very fast and good. Personally I admire Knopper and Adriane a lot. They are awesome couple very dedicated and very inspiring! I also admire the spirit of this man, an electical engineer, staying in a small place (with less than a lakh people )of Germany (Kaiserslautern) making Linux more useable - so different from many people who just talk and do nothing. Very refreshing. The installer developers (Fabian Franz, Kano and of course Knopper) have done an excellent job too this time. It is like having a good knoppix on hard disk now which had some issues earlier like problems with pendrive. (Details of installer are available here: http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Knoppix_Installer) Regards Gajendra ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/
Re: [ilugd] Fwd: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:1921] [OT] (possibly) Most user friendly Distro for non-techies
- Updates and upgrades used to be a major issue, at least till some time back. Upgrading a Knoppix installation was next to impossible (as some people on this list can testify). Considering the daily increasing need for security, having an OS that can't be upgraded is not option. Of course, things may have changed since the last time I looked at Knoppix, in which case this becomes a non-issue. Similarly, installing a package that is not available on the base Knoppix DVD image could become a major problem. Its possible to upgrade the hard disk installed image as mentioned earlier in 5.3.1. (http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Knoppix_Installer). Upgrading is synced with debian lenny/sid So update and getting new packages can be done with debian repos. (In my experience doing update with debian testing is preferrable). Knopper's customisations may get lost due to package update though. Upgrading option is also similar. I mentioned it in context of a person who need not upgrade like they do with a certain distro only getting occassional dis-service packs. I am basically recommending it for non-techies who want things working out of the box, no headache of synaptic manager since so many softwares including those for development + special purposes available by default. For those inclined there is nothing better than a vanilla debian/slackware distro of course. Well, today it is RH/Fedora in the situation, tomorrow it could be Ubuntu or Gentoo or Mandriva. Lets accept the facts and move ahead. It really did gave us an idea of how two communities reacted to similar incidents and the Bruce compared the two approaches and gave what he thought about it. If there is factual inaccuracies, please provide them. From my casual reading of it I don't think there seems to be any factual inaccuracy. Given a lazy sunday afternoon I might be tempted to pull them out and see if an update can be done for something newer than that. The other option is to just download the tar.gz from mozilla.org and drop them into a dir under ~/ - use that. Should work. I had also tried using it on an old machine with an OS of similar vintage. It couldn't be used due to various libraries being older including gtk amont others. So it may not be that simple. Like he says 2 more are needed. Personally I find firefox2 is sufficient for all needs and most greeds.
