2007-09-07 Thread Linux Lingam
dear triveni,

Have been using APC HI800SQ since April 2007.
Due to severe voltage fluctuations(which is regular
feature in Gurgaon,if we have electricity)
the UPS went dead twice in last 5 months and was
replaced within a day without any charges.

hmmm... APC as a choice doesn't sound too encouraging to me.

It can be said APC service is very good in warranty
 period.

sure.

APC Sine wave is around 20K (double of other inverters
 in the market).

maybe a good idea to buy two units of the other inverter, and use one
for redundancies.

Su-Kam Sine waver is supposed to be very good too,and
 not costly.

i also looked at the website of luminous www.myluminous.com and found
their background, profile, products and clients quite
confidence-building. also checked out su-kam.com and checking their

any specific things to watch out for in the unit?
 Get a sine wave inverter.
And get a battery of your choice, which doesn't need
 much maintenance.

i did purchase a CVT from Elnova circa 1985. their quality was very
good at that time. i knew them through a relative. they seemd to be

their site does not mention inverters or UPS for home-use.
i wonder how they compare to su-kam and luminous.

have you used any of their products in the setup i describe?

In 'Armageddon' (or maybe 'Deep Impact' or something else) one Russian
astro-scientist suggested something like, 'when a machine is not
working, kick it, and it will start'. So, maybe, you will have to kick
it. Because it is not working for five holy years, maybe you will have
to kick it extremely hard. So, better to search for tungsten boots in
reasonable prices in Indian markets. Or, as it is a LUG list, you may
search for source core of tungsten, to develop and hack into a good pair
of boots.

Re: [ilugd] [off-topic] UPS catches fire

2007-09-06 Thread Linux Lingam
dear sudev,

thanks for your response.

My office in Okhla had a fire four odd years back due to overheated
UPS left on by a user. As one of the UPS manufacturer was a tenant
downstairs I could get the following explanation: The issue is that
all UPS heat up when inverting supply. Over a period the insulation
of wire etc is likely to become weak leading toleakage (mild short
circuiting) which in turn draws more current meaning more heating
meaning more insulation breakdown and so on till the cycle results in
flames. More true in long power outages.

that's true. the irony here is that my UPS installations have worked
without problems when power-breakdowns would occur daily for 6 to 8
hours non-stop, and then again go through brown-outs and all the
vicious stuff that used to happen with the supply.

the UPSes have handled those rough years with no breakdowns, except a
blown AC or DC fuse once in a while.

things have smoothened out now, with minimal breakdowns and better
supply and distribution. so am even more intrigued.

Since then we have switched to APC UPS on all applications that need
24 hour on time and with no external batteries. Some of these have
been in service for long time without problem. It is better to use a
small genset in tandem with UPS than use batteries unless you have a
setup where regular upkeep can be done. I know this is costly but fire
 is deadly.

right. thanks for the advice.
so your APC have some maintenance-free batteries inside for a few
minutes of backup while the generator fires up?

 more specific questions:
how old is your luminous? is it an invertor?

Not very old. +2 years.
what kind of load have you connected to it? lights, fans, comps?

1100 W of fans, exhausts, comps and lighting - relatively stable load
of about 600-700 W at power factors of about 0.6-0.7 (guessing) so about
1000 - 1100 KVA .
Rest intermittent loads like the food processor, water pump, washing
machine (without water heating and the spin cycle) etc.

All within the energy budget I guess.

is your luminous a pure sinewave, or a step-sine, or placeholder?

They do call it a pure sinewave, but I have not connected an
oscilloscope to check. Nevertheless, however big an inductor they may
have used, they would still have their chopping frequency present in the
output. Again, I haven't checked for I don't have at hand an osciloscope
or other device combination like a step down transformer to use with the
mic jack.

Cheers,
Ajay
