Re: [ilugd] Linux based Web Hosting

2012-12-31 Thread Anurag Bhatia
Mridul,

For India based VPS I would recommend http://www.vr.org/ - pretty good
pricing and solid technical support. They have servers at Netmagic Mumbai.
Hostgator India is good as well but not sure how's company's support after
it got acquired sometimes back.

If you are not looking for low latency/ India specific servers, then I
would suggest following:

   1. Contabo - http://contabo.com/?show=vps (best deal in terms of price
   but not 24x7 support)

   2. Linode - http://www.linode.com/ - highly reliable but slightly on
higher end along with Hostgator US (Servers in Softlayer datacenter)

   3. Amazon EC2 instance in Singapore or US or even Europe might be
another option but I just find more talk about cloud then of real value.
Unless you have some really specific requirements, it won't make sense to
go for a very low server for $25 or so a month with low resources. Also,
bandwidth stays slightly expensive on Amazon. Around 12 cents per GB, so we
are looking at around 6Rs/GB, so 600Rs for 100GB/out transfer. So just be
aware that if you have high out bandwidth, it will put a significant cost
   on monthly bill.

   4. You can also look at Tata IaaS with India + Singapore datacenter but
I found support to be of way too low quality. Less on support on high on
   sales - http://instacompute.com/

So you can decide based on all these factors. I personally ran my servers
with Softlayer, in-house datacenter with my previous employer and private
colo's in US reliably in past. For cheap VPS part Europe always worked well
with super cheap bandwidth along with better pricing in general. If
bandwidth is not concern then only Indian servers will make sense (along
with fact that if you love low latency and expecting more visitors from
India). Keep in mind that performance will be awful for US/Europe users on
Indian servers (200-300ms latency).

Also, I do back a lot on Amazon S3 (and Glacier) to dump daily backup of
all data. It costs super low and thus if you don't have mission critical
application can accept slight downtime then go for one which is cheap
have simple bash scripts doing backup, encryption push dumps to Amazon S3
(and eventually to Glacier). So that can be a good and powerful enough
setup for less mission-critical server.

I hope this will help!

I can highly recommend E2E Networks http://e2enetworks.com if you are

They've their servers in India, and hence have excellent connectivity,
low latency, and works well even if the international bandwidth is

it's being run by Tarun Dua who's also a member on this list.

Price seems too high. I am paying 26 euro (less than INR 1900) per month
for a hardware which has 8 GB RAM, 2 HDD with 1 TB each (so I can use
soft-raid), dual core AMD processor. This is not cloud.

I've found E2E's price very competitive, near comparable to other cloud
hosting providers, especially considering that they've servers in India.
Bandwidth in India is still very expensive.

Not being in a cloud has a disadvantage that you've to take care of your
hardware yourselves. I've had servers in the similar cost range as
yours, but these are usually very old servers and I've not found their
performance to be satisfactory. Though if it's just for personal use,
then maybe that suits, as it did for me for quite some time. I'm also
hosting with Rackspace Cloud (3 instances) Hivelocity (2 dedicated
servers), and I see that being outside India will always have its
benefits on the cost front.

On the other hand, being in India maybe slightly expensive, but it has
its advantages as far as network connectivity is concerned. I had
purchased a 1U rack server and co-located it in a Noida facility, and
later moved to E2E's Cloud instance. In both cases, I've had a latency
of between 20ms to 80ms and working over ssh seems that you're working
on a local machine. Same goes for response times when you load your
website in the browser - it's near instantaneous. The best part however
is that it isn't affected by the international connectivity, which means
if some under-sea cable fault happens, or say Bharti or Tata are facing
temporary bandwidth issues, at least your server would perform well.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions and help, Ravi and Vipul.
Considering your suggestions, I guess I choose between Hetzner and Ec2. I
could go with amazon ec2, considering the free

If you want total control, like installing any environment
(python/ruby/php), access through SSH, etc, shared hosting is out of
options. For VPS/owned-instance, you can try:
 1. Slicehost
 2. Rackspace
 3. Amazon EC2
 4. Hetzner
 etc

All of these let you choose different instance types (RAM/CPU type based),
and will provide you web interface to install any popular Linux distro. You
will be given access to SSH, and then its all yours to do whatever you want
to. So, basically it will be whole virtual remote machine with Linux.

I am using some instance from all these providers. In my opinion,
Rackspace is cheapest for a low profile instance. I am getting billed
$14/mo for small instance which has 512MB RAM. If you need better machine,
high RAM in comparatively low price, try to buy some reused hardware at
Hetzner.. Amazon EC2 stands at same level as Rackspace, but it has better
 addons, like S3/EBS/DNS etc.

Amazon EC2 has free plans for starters. If you want a free instance for a
year, register on Amazon EC2, and select the tiny instance (perhaps with
600-700 MB RAM) and you will get linux with sufficient RAM to run your
 web-app/site.

My experience with other VPS and Shared hosting been rough.

I am using shared web hosting @ www.kashipur.net. It is India based
company so you can pay with INR cheques.I believe their data
center is hosted @ Rackspace.

ssh access was about Rs. 500/year extra but worth it. I get the
flexibility of installing the latest package from tar balls compared
to what might be available through CPanel/Fantastico. Default db back
end is MySQL which is OK for my needs.

Support response is good and to my satisfaction.
