Re: [ilugd] Information needed about Debian Sarge
Hi Sandip! Sandip Bhattacharya wrote: Aaargh! You expect me to do a complete upgrade over network? I dont live in US dude! What about in amchi Dilli! I have been using Debian unstable full-time since July now and am extremely happy with it! Agreed that here I've very few download constraints--sitting on 5 2Mbps lines :-D I do a apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade daily to stay on the bleeding edge. I tried this as an experiment first to see how often things break. They do break but not very often. I would say that unstable is the most updated gnu/linux distribution I have used, provided you have a means to keep up with the updates. It is recommended that you run stable as you are most likely to get support for it from debian peers. Testing is also supported. but if you No. Testing is for me .. even though the Debian site make ominous statements that even the testing doesnt have support. True there are no security updates for testing or unstable, but that is just because they upgrade the packages themselves to a higeher version rather than backporting a security patch like in stable. Stable is THE way to go for servers where you may not need bleeding edge stuff, but IMHO unstable is the one cut out for desktops (atleast for people like us ;-) Any clue as to which year in this millenium, the sarge is going to be stable? ;) Who knows? ;-) Okay I have tried and tested an alternate installation strategy and it works great. I get the latest knoppix CD (knoppix = debian testing/unstable + some important stuff from experimental and elsewhere, like XFree86 4.3...). Then I install knoppix to the hard disk using the knopix-install script. This gives us a packed (rather heavily so) desktop with everything you want in it! Then I just edit the /etc/apt/sources.list to point to unstable and do a apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade. The first time requires a bit of fighting but after that its smooth sailing. I agree that this gives a bulky installation with stuff you may never need... so its your choice whether you want to go from bare-bones to what you want (traditional woody-sid way) or thin-down a bulky install to what you want (knoppix-sid way). [ilugd] Information needed about Debian Sarge
I have been wanting to try out Debian for quite a while. However, a look at the packages in the stable distrib(http://packages.debian.org/stable/) put me off. So I decided to take a look at the testing distrib(http://packages.debian.org/testing/). These seemed pretty good. So I decided to take a look at the CD images provided (http://mirrors.sec.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/debian/debian-unofficial/sarge/). I have heard that just the first three CDs would be enough to start off. However, unless I am mistaken, these CDs are created every week, most probably with the latest updates (a great thing considering the RHL9 CD images are static and all the updates thereon have to be downloaded everytime). I cant but help wondering though how much testing is done on the final CD images to see things dont break in any installation. However, the release notes talked about a change in the installation process - using debian installer in this distrib. A random search on google brought this page (https://shop.linuxit.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=32) which claimed that the weekly updated Sarge CDs are not bootable. Apparently you need a woody CD to boot Sarge :)). The Australian Linux magazine has a very good installation walkthrough(http://articles.linmagau.org/modules.php?op=modloadname=Sectionsfile=indexreq=viewarticleartid=455page=1) of this installler though which doesnt mention any such problems. Re: [ilugd] Information needed about Debian Sarge
As everyone knows...debian is hell to install...however apt does tend to make your job easier...i just installed debian unstable(sid) on my machine today. the way i did is: downloaded first two cd's of woody and installed that...then downloaded first two cd's of sid put them in...changed my /etc/apt/sources.list file to add the two sid cdroms using the command:apt-cdrom add one at a time. then i typed apt-get dist-upgrade with only the two cd's in the sources.list. once this was done(and this last step took quiet a while) i edited the XF86Config file to support my monitor(getting X to work on debian is hard)..however a better way would have been to just copy the XF86Config file from another X install(for example your RH install) and then rename it as /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.i also had to edit my mouse device etc. since it did not recongnize it straight off...after having gone through all this...i typed startx and kde 3.1.5 popped up...i gotta say...debian is faster on my machine that any other distro i have ever tried...SuSE,mandrake,slackware,knoppix,red hat and a couple of others...and apt makes it just too good to resist..apt works like a dream doing everything for you. newayz this is how i did it...BTW i did try to install sid straight off but that somehow did not work for me since it just gave me a console(a bash emulator or something) and i had no idea where to go from there...hence i took this long cut...another easy way to have sid on ur machine is to install knoppix...it has excellent preconfiguration options and a ton of apps all on one LIVE CD. hope this helped.
Hi Sandeep, Installing debian is very easy if you know what you are doing. :) Step 1: You need is either the first cd from the stable branch or the stable boot floppies. Step2: Install the bare minimum debian system from the first cd or your boot floppies. this will get your network going. Step3: edit /etc/apt/sources.list and change it to reflect your distro preference eg. Stable/Testing/Unstable. choose any of the debian mirrors debian.org and kernel.org have a the listing. Step 4: do a apt-get update;apt-get upgrade. Step 5: run deselect or apt-get install to install your fav packages. Step 6: open your beer bottle and enjoy the show :) It is recommended that you run stable as you are most likely to get support for it from debian peers. Testing is also supported. but if you decide to run unstable and in the process break the package manager. ie. apt then be prepared for warth wherever you go for help. Cheers! Spoonman. Can anyone give information about the training places where mobile-java technology (J2ME/Midlet etc.) in Linux/Windows platform is taught ? I don't know about the various places where it is taught, but I don't think that you really need to go to many places. Get a couple of books on J2ME programming and read thru the articles at sun. J2ME is quite simple once u get the basics. Ambar Roy ___ ilugd mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd

Re: [ilugd] Information required
I don't know about bluetooth applications.. But if you need to learn about mobile technologies, one good site to visit is the developer's section of nokia.com, It used to be forum.nokia.com. There you can learn most things about developing solutions. Although a lot of it will be biased towards developing applications for Nokia platforms, but you can still get a good deal of information. IMHO for new application technologies, nothing beats the internet. For most platforms you can get free development kits and sample applications. Ambar Roy Thanks for your comments.
