Try to adjust refresh rate, Many a time this is the sole cause for fall back
of low resolution. I always save my Xconfiguration to my mail account and
each time of install fedora, just a download effort is needed. You can fight
kubuntu to make it work and save configuration,

if you don't like the dumbing down try Debian.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg should allow you to do the reconfiguration.

If the xorg.conf has the display you want (maybe not the default one) you can
change it with the kde utility krandrtray.

I did that, its asks me for keyboard and all, and then finishes, and
writes xorg.conf without any display info at all.
I think I am going to mandriva. Will install that today and see.
With 256MB of ram OpenSuse is just dying.

Don't blame Ubuntu for problems with a specific package. The latest
versions of xorg (supposedly) ship with "smart" detection of video
hardware and you (usually) don't have to configure anything to get it
to work. No matter what distribution you switch to, you will get the
same behaviour.

If it doesn't work for you then try googling for a solution. Here's a
lead to get you started -

Does krandrtray work for you?

I don't want a distro war, but if you're still looking for a distro
which you can build as per your choice but avoid major compilation
from source, have a look at arch. That is what you might like. It
gives you a lot of things to hand configure, it has quite a good
amount of packages and at the cutting edge. You can also compile a few
software from source occassionally if you need to, using their package
manager.
Also, I believe crux has some such good features but I am yet to explore it.

Kubuntu users very stable x settings.

graphics card?

driver?

I hope you know how to generate modelines, configure 3D, xgl ...

Some graphics cards like the ATI 1950 have strange problems with the
proprietary driver.

Append graphics part of lspci -vvv
