I used the guide to open the guide. I got the screws removed, but I
couldn't get the bottom to come off the front of the iMac. Is there a
trick to it?

Don't know what your financial situation might be, so... I'd been
running an upgraded Sawtooth G4 (1.6 GHZ Processor) for a couple of
years and it was a decent machine. In January, I got a big check for a
lot of overtime and thought I'd spring for a new Intel iMac... 'twas
my birthday, after all!!! ;-)
Anyway, my Sawtooth was no slouch, but the iMac is... wicked f'ing
fast. (20", 2.4 GHZ Core 2 Duo, 4GB ram)

Of course, my input has no real weight... just a humble voice across
the ether whispering "Intel"!

I had a brand-new iMac G5 20" with ALS that I bought in May 2005.
After 5 LCDs and 2 logic boards, AppleCare replaced it. The aluminum
Intel iMac that replaced it has 11 temperature sensors instead of the
G5's 3, and has been rock solid and trouble-free for 18 months.

Apple replaced a lot of G5 iMac logic boards and power supplies
because of dodgy and prone-to-fail capacitors. In just the last 2
months, I've worked on two iMac G5s for friends. The first had 5
popped capacitors and 2 were leaking electrolyte. I advised her to get
something newer 'cause hers was on the way to logic board failure. The
second unit was a first-generation G5 iMac which was bought as an
Apple refurb. It already had a logic board replacement, yet it too
suffered from bad capacitors: 5 on the logic board; 6 on the power
supply board. The second one wouldn't even start.

iMac G5s couldn't handle heat very well, and were/are plagued with
failing capacitors. I wouldn't advise anyone to buy a used one. Go for
an Intel iMac.

Re: Time to upgrade; need guidance

2009-03-11 Thread Cyrus Griffin

I would suggest one of the old-style white intel Core 2 Duo iMacs. You
can get them for about the same price as a new Mac Mini on eBay, and
with 3Gb of RAM they are still very decent computers. (Plus I really
dislike Apple's new "mirror" phase, where they think you would rather
stare at bright lights behind you then the actual display. But if you
don't care, you could get the first-generation of those for probably
just a little more)

System error - Ram drive to big

2009-03-11 Thread Frederic Logghe
Hello

When booting my iMac G3 33mhz i receive the message 'system error, ram-drive
to big, ram-drive closed.' (is in Dutch) There is no error code, and the
computer freezes. Only a button restart appears. Starting with the
extensions disabled doesn't help neither. Booting from CD gives the same
problem. It is not my computer, but as far as I know they did not open the
iMac.

Any help is welcome.

Kind regards

G5 with ambient light sensor - any problems?

2009-03-11 Thread Judith Rosenbaum

I have an opportunity to purchase a one-owner 20" G5 with Ambient Light Sensor
(M9845LL/A May 2005) for a pretty reasonable price. I'm hesitating because I
believe I recall a review that mentioned a problem with this version: runs hot?
noisy? third generation a better machine?. I've searched but can't find the
info I'm looking for and wondered if anyone has any advice.

I'm using a G3 that is developing problems and would like to upgrade a bit. I
use my computer for the basics: e-mail, research, photos, finances. I don't
game, create videos or music.

Your opinion/suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Time to upgrade; need guidance

2009-03-11 Thread owen

Hi all,

I haven't paid much attention to new releases since '04, so I'm
looking for advice on where the "sweet spot" is in flat panel iMacs. I
could go with new, but I've had good luck with refurbs and with used
machines, and the budget it tight so cheaper would be very welcome.

For background - my wife's Tangerine conked out in '04, so I got her a
refurb G4 (1.25ghz 20") just as the G5s were being announced (I liked
the price, and the fact that it could still boot OS 9). I fixed the
tray-load 266 and used it to replace my 7200/90 until I found a Flower
Power on eBay. Wifey fell in love at first sight with the 500mhz slot-
loader, and gave me her G4. I wish I could say I planned it that way
but really I am just lucky.

So now it's '09, and I can deal with the lack of DVD support, but the
15" screen and 500mhz CPU just aren't cutting it anymore (even with
1gb RAM installed). Also we've been running 10.3 and it feels like
time to upgrade that too (TurboTax online doesn't seem to be working
right, I want an upgraded iPhoto, and everytime I boot iTunes it gives
me an irritating upgrade message that's not even compatible with 10.3)
- and I'd prefer not to have to support multiple operating systems at
home.

I was hoping Dan would have posted a "Guide to flat panel
iMacs" (hint), but between the individual profiles and the "value
equation" articles it's easy enough to pick up the specs. That doesn't
tell me a lot about the relative merits and demerits though.

We're also looking at laptops, but my Duo 250 and her eMate really
never got used as much as our iMacs.

So what does everyone think? Should I pick up a second G4, upgrade to
G5, Or make the jump to Intel?

Thanks!
Owen

Hello again:

I guess I do not fully understand the issue. I may be getting what
you call an echo. In another lowendmac, google groups e-list for G4
Books,
http://groups.google.com/group/g4books/t/02493a33c085bca2?hl=en

I am in digest mode. I joined the thread from my Apple Mail client
using my gmail.com account. I received a download of my message to
the list. Is that the echo you want? True, that e-mail does not
appear in the online Inbox. But it does appear in the online Gmail
Sent and All Mail boxes.

However in looking at a message that I sent on March 8 to the g3-5
list, I did not receive a download. Therefore no echo? Both lists
are in digest mode, and I handled my inputs the same way in each case.

Now, I'll see if I get a download of this message.
