Reassembled 24" iMac, Minor Problem
After experiencing numerous overheating problems with my 24" iMac, I went ahead and disassembled it and blew all the dust out. While I was in there, I upgraded to a 2TB hard drive. I put it back together, and everything seems to be working properly. Well, except for one minor problem. There appears to be a very narrow strip of cloth blocking the RAM slot screw. I don't know where it came from or how to get rid of it/move it out of the way. I really don't want to fully disassemble the thing just to get get the RAM cover back on. Can I get rid of it with a few strategic cuts of a razor blade? Has anyone else who has disassembled an iMac seen this before? Ran Applejack from Open Firmware No. You ran AppleJack from the root account of OS X, while booted into Single User Mode. and it said something about incorrect number of thread records, invalid volume file count. The files system on your HD has been corrupted, perhaps the data areas also. It also says that there is a missing directory record and Applejack was not able to fix the disc. AppleJack is simply a shell script that runs various utilities. fsck, aka Disk Utility, was unable to repair the disk volume. Any idea of what to do? As others have said, try a different tool. You can try booting on your OS X DVD, or an external drive, and running a Repair Disk pass with Disk Utility -- but I doubt that will work, as fsck has already failed. The next best tool is DiskWarrior. Fsck tries to repair the file system in-place. DiskWarrior is a bigger hammer - it will try to rebuild the file system from scratch, making a whole new one. Of course, this doesn't say much toward the actual cause. If your HD is failing, then the only point of doing the repair work would be to get it to the point you can make a backup... - Dan. -- - Psychoceramic Emeritus; South Jersey, USA, Earth. -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. Re: Smart Copy?
Hmm. I must have had Speed Doubler at some point, because I used "Smart Copy" often. Then over the years, I lost it and miss it! I could not remember that it was once part of Speed Doubler. Is there something out there currently that will do the same thing in OS X (10.5.8, PPC)? Apple seriously needs to add it to the Finder! Hi Felix: This is not about fixing bugs; it's about enhancements. I love Time Machine. I am not an early adopter and did not use Time Machine until I picked up an early model Time Capsule on close-out. This saved my bacon several times, within minutes of stupid mistakes. I use CCC weekly to a separate drive. I do not use a third-party TM scheduler simply because the ones I know about do not have a feature I would use. Smart Copy?
Hello All, There was a sub-utility, I think it was part of Connectix Speed Doubler I think it was called "Smart Copy" and would allow you to, for example, drag the entire contents of a folder, group of folders, group of files, or even an entire drive to another drive. It would compare the files of the source and destination discs and only copy files that are new or updated. It may also have had the option of deleting files that are no longer on the source disc. "Normal" copy doesn't do that. The only optons are to replace all, or cancel... Or go through the painstaking task of answering "replace file?" (or folder) for each and every file. Is there a good utility for X that works like "Smart Copy?" Being that Speed Doubler worked on OS 8, I can't imagine it requiring OS 10.Jillion to work in X. Re: Run Time Machine at Shut Down
Al, Personally, I gave up on Time Machine a long time ago. It was nothing but trouble. Perhaps most of its old kinks have been already ironed by now, but I see from your posts that it's still buggy --three OS's later. I depend on good ole SuperDuper for my backups. Both my working Macs get backed up once a day, in the wee hours when everybody but the cats is asleep. They wake up, get backed up in perhaps five minutes, and go back to sleep without so much as a hiccup. And the backups are bootable, which is a plus for me. Don't get me wrong, I understand the advantages of Time Machine, but are they worth the aggravation?
