Re: iMac and new EcoDisk

2010-10-02 Thread Steve from Raleigh
It is always amusing to hear/read comments about odd US food offerings
from folks from Great Britain, that paragon of great cuisine. Most
Americans would be freaked out if offered kippers for breakfast,
although I'm sure some might actually enjoy grilled, oily fish with
heads and tails intact. Not me, but I do enjoy the food hailed as
Britain's true national dish, chicken tikka masala.

We are saved from the 'biscuit' in 'the uk. Which would just freak everyone
 out I think.

Re: Droolworthy new iMac

2009-10-21 Thread Steve from Raleigh

Jim,

Good for you! I'm envious, but impressed, and I hope you enjoy the
heck out of your new machine. And good for your grandson, too!

Well, you can be a droolin' dreamer or you can be a satisfied schemer.
 I started saving up towards a big-screen LED-backlit iMac a couple of
years ago, with my scheme being to be ready when Apple finally got
around to making them. Shortly after the Apple Store came back up on
 Tuesday, I ordered a 27-inch Late 2009 iMac with the 3.06 GHz
processor, 4 GB RAM, 1 TB HD, bluetooth keyboard and Magic Mouse,
Apple Remote and AppleCare. It's now about halfway between the LA area
and Sacramento on a Fed Ex truck on I-5, and should be at my front
 door about 11:45 tomorrow morning.

My mid-2007 aluminum 20-inch iMac will move down the counter to my
grandson's spot in my home office, replacing the Mac Mini.

So you can be foolin' around droolin', but it takes action to get
 satisfaction.

Re: Mouse and memory

2009-08-28 Thread Steve from Raleigh

At the Apple online store, on the left column list, click on Mac
Accessories to see Apple's mouse options.

I'm sure you meant G5 (since % is 5 capitalized), and if you simply
search for Sketchup, Google's 3D modeling software (free or $495) and
click on Download, you will see the system requirements. You meet the
minimum, but not the recommended, computing power.

Not to be rude, but this sounds like a lot of software power for
someone who couldn't find this data themselves in 30 seconds.

My mac is .8 GHz Power PC G% 512 MB RAM

  1.  Is that sufficient for sketch up?

I'm guessing you mean an 800 Mhz G4, and it's very marginal, per their
 requirements page:

 Minimum hardware
         • 1 GHz PowerPC™ G4.
         • 512 MB RAM.
         • 160 MB of available hard-disk space.
         • 3D class Video Card with 128 MB of memory or higher. Please ensure
that the video card driver supports OpenGL version 1.5 or higher and
 up to date.
         • 3 button, scroll-wheel mouse.

If you have the stock video card in it, I'd say no, it will not run
Sketch Up acceptably, if at all.

I've run Sketch Up on a 1 Ghz G4 with a gig of ram and it ran
 acceptably, but I'd upgraded the video card to an ATI Radeon 9200;
that's the big thing. I'll wager it will be usable if you do that, and
kick up the RAM to at least a gig.

  2.  What brand mouse should I buy.  I can't find anything in the Apple
  store.

Any old two-button scroll-wheel USB mouse is supported by OS X out of
the box. (including the scrollwheel click, which serves as the third
 button.)

Re: AirPort card for imac G4?

2009-07-25 Thread Steve from Raleigh

Ah, the Apple support page specifies M8881LL/A as the model number of
the AirPort card you need, and that it is no longer available from
Apple--no surprise.
Do shop around, prices vary all over the board.

Here's the link to Apple Support on this exact procedure, with
pictures--and, as they state, The only tool required for this
procedure is a Phillips screwdriver size 00 or jeweler's screwdriver
size 0.

Re: Toner refills...?

Hi there: I am seeing bottles of refill toner for laser cartridges
being offered, and would like to solicit views on how sensible a
route that might be, rather than try to find an increasingly rare
cartridge for my poor old Apple 12/640 PS. How feasible is it to put
new toner into old cartridges? Messy? Reliable? Complicated? Etc. etc.

As you probably know, the Apple part number for that toner cartridge
is M4683G/A, and using that or your model number, I found thousands of
hits on Google for remanufactured/compatible cartridges, at least as
low as $62+shipping (6,000 pages @ 5% coverage), and almost all of
those I checked offered refilling.

So, I don't think rare really applies, but you don't have the
advantage my old Laserwriter Pro 630 has of having an HP equivalent.
FYI, the other printers using your cartridge include: Xerox DocuPrint
P12, GCC Elite 12/1200N,12/600,1212, IBM 4312, IBM Network Printer 12,
and NEC Superscript 1260,1260N.

BTW, believe it or not, toner is considered a toxic material and you
need to take special care not to breathe in any of that fine
polystyrene powder if you do undertake refilling yourself--and follow
your communities' rules on disposal of household toxic waste.

Re: worth of used imac

2008-12-11 Thread Steve from Raleigh

Shop in other states: When shopping for Apple products, consider
shopping from out of state merchants. Do so and you can dodge paying the
sales tax for the state you reside in, saving upwards of 9% off your
purchase. Powermax.com in Oregon, Smalldog.com in Vermont,
 LAComputercompany.com.

 c-k

Warnings (from a tax professional) on sales taxes--that I believe to
be consistent across the country:
-- if the out-of-your-state retailer has ANY physical presence in your
state, even just a warehouse, they are required to collect and remit
sales tax to your state (e.g., if Apple has a store in your state,
you will be charged sales tax on new or refurbs ordered from Apple
online);
-- every state that has a sales tax also has a use tax which is
usually the same percentage and applies to purchases made outside the
state. Collection varies, but in NC taxpayers are expected to self-
report on their annual state income tax return.

Do many online buyers still skip paying the tax? Of course, but the
states have been working toward federal legislation that would require
ALL retailers to collect and remit sales tax based on the buyer's
state of residence. States are losing huge amounts of tax, and bricks-
and-mortar stores are losing business to online retailers, they feel
unfairly, due at least partly to the sales tax disparity. Expect this
pressure to rapidly increase with the growing deficits in state
budgets!

 Is this a sign?

I love the old Flying Toasters, but had problems (hung system, weird

modern version, stated to be compatible with OS 10.5, I would be
suspicious of it. If you have found such a modern version, let us know
