Big Sur crashes etc

2021-05-11 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: Ever since installing Big Sur/11.3/11.3.1, I have been having big
problems with the machine crashing and restarting randomly, taking forever to
shut down, refusing to shut down altogether, even spontaneously powering on
from being off. Anyone else seeing this behavior? Suggestions for how to deal
with it other than getting another drink and waiting for the next update?

I’m also finding that Music and Podcasts are moody about synching with my
trusty old iPod Classic…I have to wait for the iPod to eject, then select it
again in Music before it fully syncs, and even then the podcasts don’t
necessarily always get synced—plus podcasts that I want to save don’t
necessarily get saved once they’re played. Annoying.

Thanks!

External backup drive recommendations

2021-01-24 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: My wife’s 2nd computer has just been replaced with a new 1TB SSD
Mini, and we need to get a backup for it. I’d be glad to know your recommended
sources, makers, and types (meaning HD vs. SSD). The size would be probably
1-1.5 TB, I guess, no need for more than that as far as I know; the data at
issue will not change very often at all since it’s a single use/function
machine—meaning it only gets used for one specific activity that does not
involve much updating of data.

Thanks!

Finding duplicate files

2021-01-05 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: How can I find duplicate files? I think I have several boatloads of
photos that are dupes of each other, in various folders. There’s also the old
iPhoto stuff that I can’t navigate anymore anyway, and I think there are dupes
in there as well. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance!

Time Machine configuration...?

2021-01-01 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: I’ve got Big Sur installed now, and I’m hoping to be able to use Time
Machine to do my backing up rather than Carbon Copy Cloner, which is what I’ve
been using for quite a while now. But I can’t see how to configure TM to do
what I need. Here’s the setup:
I have three physical HDs, one internal to the Mini and two external.
One of the externals is partitioned, so the system actually thinks I have four
HDs.
The idea is to back up the internal to one partition and the standalone
external to the other partition.
TM isn’t showing me one of the (partitioned) HDs as a possible destination for
a backup.
It also isn’t showing me the internal HD as a source.
The two it's showing (which are for what used to be called iTunes, one the
source and the other the destination) are formatted as Mac OS Extended
(Journaled); the two it isn’t showing (for the HD itself, ditto) are formatted
as APFS.
Is that difference in format a (or the) issue?
If I reformat anything I will lose all that data, as you know.
How can I proceed?
Thanks for any insight, and happy new year!

Video editing question

2020-12-20 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: I seem to be being hauled toward getting into some basic video
editing/production. I could please use some insight into the
advantages/disadvantages of Final Cut Pro vs. Adobe Premiere Elements. I have
never really done anything with video editing, and I really doubt I will have
any very high-end needs—pretty basic is what I’m expecting. The pricing is
quite different from what I can see, and cheaper is certainly better if
possible. FYI I have not gone to Big Sur yet but I will probably have to do so
before long.

Any thoughts welcome. Thanks in advance!

Backing up options for the new OS

2020-11-03 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: Here’s the story: I have two external drives in addition to the
internal one on the Mini listed below. One of the externals contains everything
that used to be in iTunes (I haven’t bothered to rename to drive), because the
main HD is not roomy enough to hold it all. The other external drive is the
backup, partitioned to handle the main HD and the iTunes material separately.
Up to now I have been using Carbon Copy Cloner to make my weekly backups
because—well, I don’t remember why it appeared at the time that Time Machine
could not handle backing up everything since it’s split among two different
drives (one internal and one external), but that’s what I thought so there we
are.

With the new OS that Apple is issuing in the near future I would like to
revisit the backup strategy, please. Could someone please confirm whether or
not I can back up everything using Time Machine given the way it’s all
configured now? And is Time Machine the best tool for backing up, or should I
continue using CCC even though it may not be compatible with the new OS right
away?

All thoughts welcome. Thanks in advance, as always!

OT: iPod upgrade question

2020-04-28 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: First, my apologies in advance for asking at all. I’m asking this
question here because I have no idea where else I can ask it aside from the
Apple communities—which I have already done. I have an iPod classic, last
generation, with the stock 160gb HD installed. It is completely full so I
cannot add anything to it anymore. Apparently it is technically possible to
replace the HD with a bigger SSD one. My question is this: Has anyone here
actually had this done? If so, did it work okay and how much did it cost?

Thanks very much in advance!

Remote acess question

2020-03-22 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: I’ve been using TeamViewer to access my father’s computer but he is
on 10.10.5 and I am as shown below. TeamViewer tells me that his version is too
old but he can’t upgrade because of the OS that his machine is stuck on (a Mini
from some years back). Apparently there’s a Chrome extension that does the same
thing: anyone here know about it? Or is TeamViewer still the way to go but how
do I get around the outdated-version block?

Thanks in advance! Bill

Catalina vs. iTunes: some questions

2019-10-24 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: I have not yet installed Catalina and need to know a couple of things
first, please:

I currently keep iTunes on a separate, external HD due to the fact that there’s
not enough room for it on the main HD (capacity 250GB, but iTunes currenlty
uses a bit over 500GB)
Will Catalina understand and maintain that separation?
Will my classic iPod (the last model they made) still work with Catalina and
the replacement for iTunes?
I back up iTunes (& everythng else) to another separate, external partitined HD
using Carbon Copy Cloner because I have been under the impression that Time
Machine can't handle the separate HD for iTunes, thogh I forget why that’s the
case
Will that backup strategy continue to work with Catalina, or will Time Machine
be the way to go? Or will backing up be handled differenly now?

My thanks in advance for any and all thoughts.

Reconfiguring AirPort Express?

2017-12-28 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: This is the kind of thing that drives me batty. I decided I wanted to
stream iTunes (version 12.7.2.58) over the home stereo via our (pre-existing)
FiOS wifi network, so I picked up an A1264 AirPort Express on eBay. It still
has the prior owner’s network running on it, so I tried using a straightened
paperclip to push the reset button (I held the button in while plugging the
unit in, like the book says). The unit is flashing amber, the old network is
still showing up, and AirPort Utility is not seeing the unit at all.

Did I tell you that I hate dealing with networking issues?

I found a PDF of the setup guide, but I cannot find the AirPort Setup Assistant
it mentions. All I want to do is get the thing to join the existing home
network so I can stream iTunes to the home stereo.

Did I tell you that I hate dealing with networking issues?

I am very sorry to be so dense, and I appreciate all offers of assistance (as
well as of a nice Scotch). Thank you very much!

Extracting audio-only from DVD audio

2017-10-17 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: I have a commercial recording of some music, which was issued as
DVD-audio rather than CD-audio. There’s video material included, which I guess
accounts for that. My question is this: I want to export the audio so that I

Driver locations?

2017-08-06 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: My wife is trying to install a new touch-screen monitor for a very
unusual application she uses. The old monitor was just too big for the space
available. From what I understand, the new monitor (Planar PT1945R) works fine
except for the touchscreen functionality. I was just on the phone with the
Planar folks, who said that there are actually two different drivers to
install, one from Planar and another from an outfit called UPDD (it seems the
Mac is very unfriendly about touch-screen technology…). He also said it would
be very useful to remove the driver for the old touch-screen monitor (made by
Tyco).

My question is this: where do I find that old driver? I have never understood
how the Mac sets up the libraries with all that stuff in them.

As always, my thanks in advance!

FaceTime/iSight question(s)

2017-04-23 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: I am just now beginning to experiment with using FaceTime with the
machine below; I bought a second-hand iSight camera not long ago to use with
it, but am baffled by some things. So I'm sorry to ask what may well be obvious
questions (the answers to which I have not yet found within the FT help
documentation), but...well, here goes.
FYI, in lieu of the proper FW port I am using a FireWire-to-Thunderbolt adapter
to connect.
When FT launches (automatically, once it detects the camera) I can see the
camera’s output image with me in it, but there’s also a message: “No camera
available. To use FaceTime, turn on the camera.” This makes no sense to
me—what’s up?
I'm apparently supposed to enter my Apple ID and password in order to activate
FT but I cannot for the life of me find where to do so.
Are there network configurations I need to set to use FT? I don't see any but
maybe that's part of the issue.
Am I right in remembering that the camera has a built-in microphone?
My parents' iPad is what I tried calling; I heard the dialing/ringing sound but
they show no indication that I tried contact them. I assume that will change
once I get the above resolved...?
As always, my thanks in advance!

CD won't import

2017-02-04 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: I recently bought a used CD that plays fine in the car and through
the stereo, but when I try to import it into iTunes, the import always fails
about 80% of the way through. Any thoughts on why, and how to fix the problem?
Thanks!

Printer recommendations?

2016-09-28 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: Our Brother wireless all-in-one is giving us a message that its drum
needs to be replaced. The cost of doing so appears to be about the same as that
of buying a new printer. So I’m wondering what anyone might recommend for a
basic laser all-in-one with wireless connectivity. Brother and Canon seem to
come up frequently but I’m glad to get other opinions. The top price would be
$150, less is always better. Thanks!

PATA drive capacity question

2015-10-09 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: I have a 2.5 inch PATA drive enclosure (Rocport 4Cx, listed as USB
2/FireWire) and I’m thinking about finding as big a drive as I can to put in it
for backup purposes. How big do they (or did they) make them? 500 gb? More?
Less? And does anyone make them anymore? (Meaning, I suppose, where would I get
one?)

I know I would have to figure out a way to connect it to the computer, but I
don’t care about speed since this would be backup-only. Of course, if it’s
impossible to connect to this machine then that obviously answers that, but I
figure there’s no harm in asking the question. My thanks in advance!

Another DVD-conversion question

2015-01-25 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: Here’s another DVD question…I have a single copy of a non-commercial
and unavailable DVD that appears to be copy-protected. I want to make a copy
for myself that I can watch on both the TV and the computer just as though I’m
looking at the original, meaning including whatever chapters might exist. To do
this, I think I have to go through a conversion process…Disk Utility refuses to
make a disk image (this is why I think the disk is copy-protected). So what’s
the simplest way to do this? I’ve come across a few software packages that
claim to do this:

MakeMKV
Total Video Converter Pro for Mac
Flv Crunch for Mac
Aiseesoft MP4 Converter for Mac

Anyone here have any experience using any of these? And what else do I need to
know? (At least I’m not dealing with regions and PAL to NTSC this time!)

As always my thanks in advance!

Migration Assistant question

2015-01-05 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: My parents bought themselves a Mac Mini for CHristmas, to replace
their late-2006 iMac (just like mine—see below). When I went up to visit them
last week to help get it set up, it turned out that the Migration Assistant
process somehow froze up well before completion, and I had to force the Mini to
shut off by holding the power button in for several seconds. What do I/we do
next? Is there a way to reset the Mini so we can start the migration anew? In
short, ¿que pasa?

As always, my thanks in advance!

Using MS Windows

2013-07-08 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: Today is my first day with my new employer, and there are things I
have to do for them that require using Windows. Since I do not have a work
computer yet I seem to be in the unhappy position of having to install Windows
on the 1.83 iMac listed below. This is completely new territory for me, so
could someone please direct me to a good source of information on what version
of Windows I need to obtain, and basically everything I need to know about
dealing with this unfortunate development. Basic, meaning cheap, is fine with
me.

As always, my thanks in advance!

Extending a network

2012-09-13 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: A friend has Verizon DSL (because FiOS isn’t available within the
city limits, I don’t know why), and the modem, or whatever its equivalent is
for DSL, generates the wireless network in his house. He wants to extend that
network so the rest of the house gets better signal strength, but there’s an
exterior brick wall between where Verizon’s device is (in a newer addition to
the house) and where the rest of the house is. I believe it will be possible to
place the new device in such a way that it can pick up the current signal
through a doorway, but I’m not 100% certain of that. So: will any wireless
router do the trick, or should he be looking at some specific features in the
extender? And are there any configuration points to bear in mind?

As always, my thanks in advance!

Connecting iMac to new TV?

2012-01-18 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: I got this note from a friend today, and am hoping someone here may
know more about it than I, since I know absolutely nothing about it.

We recently got a 40'' Samsung Smart TV, which is amazing, and I am trying to
connect it (for the purpose of mirroring) to my 2007 iMac via a Mini Display
Port HDMI Female Adapter to an HDMI chord. My Samsung says to use the HDMI 1
(DVI) port to connect, but it doesn't detect the connection (and I've tried
other, plain HDMI ports as well). I've looked online, and there are tons of
forums on this type of issue, but I haven't found anything that helped me. I
realize that it could be something as simple as a bad cable(s), but have no way
to test it. Any suggestions?”

I will pass along to him anything you care to send. Thanks in advance!

iTunes truncates when converting

2011-04-21 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: I have a single audio file of about 9 1/2 hours duration, that for
some unimaginable reason I want to split up into smaller chunks. But when I
tell iTunes (10.2.2) to convert it to AIFF so I can edit it with Audacity,
iTunes stops the conversion at well under three hours, and truncates the file.
What's going on and is there a workaround? As always my thanks in advance!

Can't print a PDF...

2010-12-04 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: For some reason I cannot print a PDF (on the second machine listed
below) from Acrobat Reader to the Laserwriter on the minimal network. The print
dialogue shows the file spooling to the printer, the green light on the printer
starts blinking, then everything resets as though the job is done...but nothing
actually printed. I can print everything else to it (web pages, documents,
etc.), and I can print PDFs to a direct-connected inkjet printer. This has just
started happening in maybe the past month or so. Any ideas?

Printing inquiry

2010-08-10 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: Is there a consensus on ink? I have two ink-jets, a Canon Pixma
iP6220D and an HP Photosmart C4400 series (as well as a laser printer), and
have been finding it increasingly difficult to get replacement third-party
cartridges that work, especially with the Canon. My choices seem to be, in
descending order of cost:

1. Branded cartridges
2. Third-party cartridges
3. Refilling myself, by hand

As we all know, #1 is very expensive, but of course the manufacturers make
their money on the ink, not the machines. #2 is as noted above. Do you-all have
recommendations on whether it makes any sense to go to #3, which I have never
done, or just suck it up and go to #1? As always, my thanks in advance!

iTunes and the firewall?

2010-04-11 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: For some days or weeks now, whenever iTunes opens up it insists on
asking me if it should accept incoming connections...even though the firewall
setting (in the Security system preference) is set to have iTunes accept
incoming connections. It would not be that big a deal except that once a week I
have things set up to launch iTunes automatically so I can listen to a
particular audio stream from a far-distant radio station and I'm tired of
answering the same question the same way. What's going on and why won't it stop

iMac flip-out--aack!

2009-12-07 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: The newer of the two machines listed below has decided to enter a
parallel universe. It will not boot to the regular login screen but instead
goes straight to my son's desktop after just a couple of seconds worth of a
grayish screen I've never seen before, with a horizontal progress-bar-looking
sort of thing visible at the bottom of the screen. The menu across the top of
the screen is no longer visible, the mouse pointer moves but will not open or
close anything, there is no way to command-tab through apps (even if there are
any open), and the only way to shut down is to hold down the power button.

I plan to dig up the original discs and see if I can boot from there, and then
see what happens...maybe repair permissions or something. I think I have an old
copy of Tech Tools floating around someplace, but I don't even know what
version, let alone if it will function properly on this thing. Push comes to
shove I can take it down to the genius bar tomorrow night, but not before then.

Any advice gratefully accepted, the sooner the better.

Display shows vertical line

2009-11-12 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: The older of the two machines below has just developed a
thin vertical yellow line, just left of center, that sometimes
flickers but not usually. I assume it's simply one of those things
that happens but am wondering if it's a symptom of something more

it looked at? And since--of course--it's just beyond the three-year

how much might this cost me? As always my thanks in advance!

Getting Mail to work with two machines

2009-09-05 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: I am hoping there's a way to get the newer machine (see
details below) when it fires up Mail to do so using the mailboxes on
the older machine. (This is because I generally use the older machine
but occasionally it's not available to me.) It looks as though the
Synchronize feature only works 1) if you have a .Mac account, which I
don't, or 2) only if your mail server uses the IMAP protocols, which
mine doesn't...they use POP. Is there some other technique I can use
to achieve this? Mail on the older machine is version 2.1.3, and I
don't know the version on the newer machine since I just installed
Snow Leopard last night. As always, my thanks in advance!

Toner refills...?

2009-01-20 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: I am seeing bottles of refill toner for laser cartridges
being offered, and would like to solicit views on how sensible a
route that might be, rather than try to find an increasingly rare
cartridge for my poor old Apple 12/640 PS. How feasible is it to put
new toner into old cartridges? Messy? Reliable? Complicated? Etc. etc.

As usual my thanks in advance!
