Re: My iMac quit working?

2010-02-28 Thread Michaelangelo
With any luck, you have the same problem I had shortly after buying a
new (old) 333 slot load: there's a small battery inside that just
flatout died. About $10 at Battery Plus (where you should bring the old
battery to confirm it is in fact dead). Yoou will have to open the
machines case and use care- there are instructions on the internet (and
probably here at LEM too). Good luck

ideas what could have caused this? I was really excited to get this machine and
now this happens.

Re: G3 600MHz iMac, dead?

2009-08-30 Thread Michaelangelo

Could also just be the battery

I wrote in about a week ago for this same computer... symptoms are:
 computer does not start
 no chime
 no light
 no HD noise

The only sound is when you plug in the computer and push the on/off
button one can hear a small' bump' of power then nothing.
This computer was working fine for just over a week after I bought it.
(private party, not eBay or retail) No screen distortions, no color
problem, no internet problems, no freezing, no glitches.
 Any speculations?

 TIA,

Re: trouble coming?

2009-08-30 Thread Michaelangelo

Thanks so much for the VERY helpful list, which I will try soon. It
sounds like the problem is not the computer but rather the operating
system. I only paid $100 for this iMac and it's worked great for a year
so I can't complain too much. Maybe it's just time for me to face buying
OS 10 from the LEM list or on ebay. If there's a major dollar difference
betweenthe OS systems I can get by fine with OS 10.3 (or maybe even OS
10.2). I don't think I HAVE to have 10.4. But what do you guys think is
best for an iMac Flower Power (500 processor)?

Cyrus Griffin wrote:
Yup, sounds like trouble in the making. You probably have some
corruption in your system. Here's a list of the basic system restore
steps, one of these should help. Just go through the list until the
 problem clears up.

   - Restart (I assume you've tried this, but it never hurts to
 reiterate it)
   - Run a Disk, and Permissions check in Disk Utility. (Located under
 [your HD]ApplicationsUtilitiesDisk Utility)
   - Reset the Pram (Hold Option, Apple, R and P at startup) and
NVram. (Hold Option, Apple, O and F at startup, then when prompted
 type reset-nvram)
   - Boot into single-user mode, and run a file system check (Hold
Apple and S at startup, when prompted, type, fsck -f) And wait a
while, because sometimes it seems like it gets stuck, but it's still
working on it. If it comes back and says No files were modified, then
there wasn't anything that it found wrong, or couldn't fix. In that
 case, try going further:
   - Create a new user, see if the problems persist in the new account.
   - Buy 10.4 install disks on eBay, and perform an archive and
 install, preserving user data.
   - Archive and install without preserving users, then copy your data
back manually. (Skipping the user Library, as at this point this is
 probably what's corrupted)
   - Back up your data, reformat your hard drive, and reinstall 10.4
 fresh.

You probably won't have to go through this whole list, but it depends
on how deeply your system's problems are. If you have any questions,
or get stuck, feel free to ask, one of us here on the iMacs list can
 help :)
Let us know how it goes, and if you're able to fix the problem.

I have an imac Flowerpower bought used with OS 10.4.11 (no OS disks).
Has worked great. About two weeks ago a couple of odd things started
to happen: (1) Outlines of boxes started to appear and disappear on
the screen, kind of like a ghost outline of something that was on the
screen that had just appeared; and (2) Under the Apple menu, Force
Quit, Restart, Shutdown, and Log Out Apple User all appear in
 the pop-up menu screen TWICE!

Obvious something is going on here. Anyone know what, and what is
 likely going to happen? Drat!

retrieving my old website files

2009-02-26 Thread michaelangelo

I think there are shareware programs that will allow me to retrieve
the entire content of my webset, or at least most of it, as an
outsider (that is, as a vistor would). I have a gardening website that
has been dormant since last year and I just learned from my ISP that
they discontinued offering website service several months ago. I can't
access my files with Dreamweaver because apparently the logon stuff
has not been maintained but I owuld like to ge the gardening files and
images from the site so I can rebuild it and upload it to my
University website. The tech guy at my ISP was surprised that the
files can still be found online, but they can. I am just looking for a
freeware program that will let me get as many of these files as
possible without having to save them to disk one by one (which would
take forever). If viewing the site helps any, it is at:

flash drive and OS 9.2.2

2009-02-21 Thread michaelangelo

I'm back with the same problem but with a different flash drive (I
gave up and returned the other one). This one is a PNY 4 GB, which
claims to be compatible with OS 8 and higher.

I am trying to set up the flash drive so I can move files back and
forth between:
My iMac g3 Dalmation, which has OS 9.2.2, and
My iMac g3 FlowerPower, which has OS 10.4 on it.

10.4 recognizes the flash drive with no problem. 9.2.2 does not. I
have gotten advice here in the past to reformat the flash drive on the
9.2 machine using Disk Utility. I don't seem to have that program on
my hard drive or on the (original) 9.1 disks that came with the
Dalmation. I only have utility programs called Drive Setup and Disk
First Aid and neither of these will recognize the flash drive.

On the PNY site they do say: Compatible with most PC/MAC laptop and
desktop computers with available USB 2.0 port (Backwards compatible to
USB 1.0)

Is it possible my old Dalmation is USB 1.o and that is the problem,
and if so what does Backwards Compatible mean, and what do I do about
it?

Last, if there is a utility program for 9.2 called Disk Utility (the
utility does exist on my OS10.4 machine) where do I find it on my
original installation disks and is it available as a free download
from Apple? I looked there but didn't see it.

Thanks so much.

thumb drives (jump drives)

2009-02-01 Thread michaelangelo

I just got a 4 GB thumb drive (is this the same thing as a jump
drive?). The package says it works with Mac OS 9.1.x+ and OS X. I got
it to transport files between my trusty Dalmation and the new
FlowerPower I just bought. The Dalmation has OS 9.2.2 on it and the
Flower Power has 10.4

The thumb drive's icon appears on the Mac with OS 10.4 but will not
appear on the desktop of the Dalmation with 9.2.2. Is there something
more I need to do when or after inserting it into the Dalmation to
make it work? I tried simply inserting it and also leaving it in while
rebooting.

Also, since I put the Thumb Drive in my Flower Power (with 10.4) the
hard drive icon on its desktop has moved down to about the middle of
the screen and it remains there even after rebooting. Why did that
happen and should I be concerned?

As always, thanks in advance for great help and information.
