I backed up to 9.04 because it fits on a cd. Installed onto the imac just fine. From there i can apparently upgrade to 9.1 (though i haven't tried yet). No video issues at all on this nvidia chip! best unix-like system for my imac?
I have been having some trouble installing FreeBSD 7.2 on my imac, and am wondering whether another BSD or Linux distribution is better suited to my machine. Using a 15-inch 1ghz usb 2.0 model with 512mb ram and 80gb hard drive. Has anyone successfully used a -nix OS on this machine? So my imac sits idle in case it ever has to act as a backup machine. In the meantime, i'd like to attempt a (different) unix-like distro. For you purists out there, that just cannot stand to use a pretty GUI, such as Aqua - the one provided by Apple - you're more than welcome to fire up Terminal and use whatever shell you want... Hmmm, a promising idea, but honestly I'd have no idea where to begin. I've looked at the FreeBSD manual online, but it has little to say about PPC install. Such has been my history attempting linux and bsd. Help me get Tiger back?
I decided to try FreeBSD on my G4 imac. It would not erase the partition i already had with os 10.4.11 on it. So i decided to erase that with my 10.4 cd and try again. Now I have erased the drive so the cd is seen as the start up drive and will not eject. I tried restarting and starting cold trying to eject the cd before it was recognised as the startup disk, but no luck. I even tried to pull the tray out manually but it is tenacious. I see no pinhole for the magic paper clip trick. S any other ideas? Once it goes to OS X it asks me for a password which I don't know. So it never goes any further. How hard are these computers to get apart? Can I replace this hard drive with another? But then I can't load another OS because the CD/DVD won't eject what is in it. Catch 22. Any ideas?? Keep trying the paper clip thingy till you hit the right spot. Networking issues with G4 imac
I am suddenly and unexpectedly needing some sort of network solution and know very little about this subject. The situation is this... for some time i have had a direct ethernet connection between my cable modem and G4 imac. Recently my roommate got a pc laptop and wanted to go wireless. We purchased a Belkin N router. He uses his g card wirelessly and is very pleased. I am currently connected via ethernet as before, except now with router in the middle. I am noticing a considerable drop in performance going via the router as opposed to directly to the cable modem; enough so that when he is not home i connect the modem directly, only using the router when necessary. This slower performance (taking longer to load web pages, and slower download speeds) occurs whether or not he is connected. My first question is whether this slowdown is to be expected when wired through the router as opposed to directly to the modem? If not, any suggestions on what i can do to increase performance? Would i have better speed going wireless myself? And if so, should i go for the Airport Extreme card, or would a third-party dongle be faster? If the latter, is there one which uses the ethernet port rather than taking up a usb slot? Many thinks for any suggestions! bill --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to Low End Mac's iMac List, a group for those using G3, G4, G5, and Intel Core iMacs as well as Apple eMacs. Since you upgraded yours to 2gb i assume you got a 1gb dimm to work in the user accessible slot? That would give me a jump from 512mb to 1.25gb ram. Sounds like a lot, and with minimal effort. adding ram to G4 imac?
I'm running Tiger on my G4 imac 1ghz 512 ram. Overall I'm very pleased with this setup, but i think i could get a bit better performance with a ram upgrade. G3 keyboard on G4?
I much prefer the compact keyboard that shipped with early imac G3 models and am continuing to use it with my G4 imac. So far the only solution I've found for opening the cd-rom tray is to always leave a cd in it. Then I can just do command E to eject and switch as necessary. Occasionally I do forget, and it is a pain to get out the proper keyboard to open the cd tray. Is there another way I don't know about to open an empty cd-tray on my G4?
